I think it's good advice to allow your slave to remove it for the purpose of avoiding problems with TSA, They can be, and have every right to be, overly thorough in their screening process...

I travel to my Dom in a corset that has metal stays, I simply tell them as I near the security area that I will need wanded. I walk with a metal cane and they take it apart. I actually just say that upfront, that I need wanded.  I have never had a problem and I too have travelled extensively.
The idea of a travel collar is a really great one. I know TSA searches my luggage EVERY time I fly so I keep all 'toys' in a clear plastic bag inside my suitcase with a Please Do Not Handle My Toys label on it! LOL.
Shoes, jewelry and belts do need to be removed. Pockets emptied and no open liquids. If you are worried I would call the airport just to check & personally I would go with the travel collar with my real collar either in my handbag or packed. *hate to pack important things tho*

BTW, if you lock your luggage with a non TSA lock it will be cut off. I use twist ties LOL with some taped inside and yet another note asking that one be replaced. Of course you can buy proper TSA locks but I am cheap *s*.

Flying into and out of SFO, Oakland, South Florida, and NYC airports, I've never had a problem with my toys. Yes my checked bags get searched but I expect that. I put everything in a clear plastic vaccum bag with a note. "BDSM implements, please don't open." My carry-on luggage I am careful not to carry anything questionable. And my bootblack supplies get checked as well. The only thing they've ever taken is my black leather dye and edge dressing because the bottle says FLAMMABLE in big bold letters. Even then it's only been removed 2 out of about every 20 trips. I try to be a model flier. I remove all non-essential jewelry and point out anything not removable. Give yourself some extra time in the airport and at the worst case you'll be ontime after a secondary search and in the best case you'll have some time to go to the bar for a well deserved drink.

If it has a locking mechanism that does not unlock explain this and if it doesn't work ask for a superior, check out the TSA web site to and print out any relevant material and bring those with you.  It may take awhile but you will eventually get a drone who happens to have a brain installed, plan for plenty of extra time though.  It's better to sit around for two hours after going through security then missing your flight.

Rant time-
90% of our security measures are a joke.  From hand gel to grandmas knitting needles, these measures do not make anyone any safer, not at all.

You know what someone has to do to get a knife on a plane?  Duct tape a pure ceramic, glass, what have you one to their back.  TADA! No metal detector in the world picks that up.  There is a reason even prisoners get shanked, non-metal knives can't be detected.  You think the security measures you pass through at an air port are worse then that?  You think they should be?  Well have fun on your nude search and anal probing.  I'll pass thanks.  And any terrorist knows this, there have been no more attempts cause they haven't tried, were stopped before they got to the air port, or gave up on it because they know even if they get 10 or 12 armed guys onto the plane they are going to have 50 or 60 tearing the ever loving hell out of them.  Not because they went "Darn!  Those new rules will keep us from ever getting on the plane armed!"

Air port security is "feel good security" just like that old guy security guard at the mall whose best weapon is his set of keys or mini mag light.  It makes the sheep bah softly and quickly go back to their grazing and deters maybe a few malnourished wolves that would be easily dealt with anyway without complicating nearly as many peoples lives.  But it looks good and encourages the sheep to do as told.

It is this reason I no longer fly and drive everywhere I go.

My late father had an artificial knee, and hip joint.  I imagine they would have had to do the same with them if he had ever boarded a plane.  I'd think a note from your dr. would be of help as well.  That way they have extra verification.  I do know that if you travel (at least overseas if not domestically) and you have to use needles to inject insulin (for diabetes) you are advised to have such a note.  Otherwise you can find yourself with your needed medical supplies being confiscated.  Or so I've heard.

I have several pins and screws in my leg, that sets off the metal detectors all the time. I tell security and than they use a hand held device to verify.

Interesting.  Not to change the topic but to your knowledge does law enforcement have a set policy about the bdsm lifesytle in general GeekyGirl?  I'm sure the topic is somewhere on the board but I'm not even sure where to look for it. lol.

Temporarily removing the collar shouldn't be that big of a deal...we do have to make some concessions to our lifestyle since we live in the "real world."

For example, I work in law enforcement and wear a uniform. I am not allowed by my department to wear any form of neck jewelry when in uniform, so for me a collar HAS to be removable. What worked for me and my previous Owner was that I wore a ring he had given me when I was at work, and wore my collar at home.

Probably true Demonic707, still I keep on having Ben Franklin's quote run through my head.  "Those who sacrifice liberty for safety will enjoy neither."  At least I think he's the one who said it.

Thanks for everyone's advice, I enjoyed seeing the amount of interest this subject has in our community.  I will probably just remove my collar for the duration of the flight.  But I do think that if the whole object of terrorism is to instill paranoia and fear, we are letting the terrorists get the better of us.  Oh well, less freedom, more safety.
