I am interested in hot wax/candle play what are the best types of candles? I have heard not to use scented candles. Is there a problem with colors?

i have seen honey candles compared to beeswax, which you are "not supposed" to use. The honey contains sugar, which gets way hotter than wax. (my Master pointed out that some people probably like getting second degree burns, to each's own, i just wouldn't play with them unless you are into pain. )

Sorry for the double post, i had another thought... we used a soy candle once, it was much cooler than regular wax, they might be something good to try if anyone is getting into wax for the first time.

Soy wax, sounds nice when I want to be nice. Anyways my favorite technique is to buy the long tubular candles in the cylinder glass.

I then boil a pot of water and put the candles in to melt. Leaves plenty of hot wax to play with as you don't burn the wick and cause any of the wax to evaporate or spill to where you can't use it.

Just a thought ...

FYI: They sell an appliance, a wax warmer, which holds the type of wax used in beauty salons (for removing hair). It keeps the temperature of the wax controlled to just the perfect degree. It could probably suit your method very well.

Examples of wax warmers: http://www.kfibeautysupplies.com/viewproduct.asp?CatID=0&SubCatID=24&PID=93

This one is only $27.00:

color candles are fine. i was all red and white just this weekend. If you're planning on laying down while it's being poured onm i definitely recommend making sure your hair is well out of the way (although even if it does get in your hair, don't panic it brushes out easily). It is going to be messy, have plenty of (old) sheets or something under you, otherwise you'l be sweeping and peeling wax off the floor for hours. Other than that, relax and have fun, i sure did.

I love my wax machine. The wax is never so hot as to cause burns but plenty hot enough to get your attention. Not to mention you can use a large quantity at a time.

I recommend you hit the dollar store instead and buy a few shower curtains, drop cloths or table cloths. It is a lot easier and cheaper.

Color can affect the heat of the candle. Metallic looking candles are to be especially avoided! This isn't just because of the heat factor (they often contain metal fragments as a colorant, making the candles much hotter than expected. Also, the temperature can vary even within a drop.), but because they often contain poisonous metal salts.

I'm sure someone has already mentioned to be careful with any candles except 100% paraffin. Beeswax melts at a higher temperature than paraffin and can cause burns needing medical attention. Something else to be aware of.. avoid candles with metal in the wicks. This is in general, not just in wax play. The metal can be lead. http://www.healthycandles.org/candle_wicks.htm

As to soy wax.. Melting Point 125 - 130 F. and a Flash Point of 600 F. Paraffin, by comparison has a melting point of about 125F degrees and a Flashpoint of 375F. Yes, I know it is an odd thing to know, but I have been planning some wax play and was thinking about making my own candles.. After researching what a pain in the butt it is to make them, I'll be buying mine. :-)

wax type and color can all be corrected by distance and ice. a sub needs to be warmed up first to get endorfins flowing anyway. start at 3' and close gap but I always check it on myself first when using a new candle or new sub. ppl skin has differnt tolerances to the heat one will blister where next one dropped exactly same will only redden.

Make sure your wic is trimmed if you have used the candle before. It is possible to have a small fragment fall off and, even if you immediately wipe it off, it burns far hotter and can blister.

Actually, Beeswax melts at a lower temp that parafin- but it cools slower, which is why it is more likely to burn the skin.

Colored candles may cause some issues, as well as scented candles, so anything should be test dripped on yourself, first. Color candles do have the advantage of letting you better see where you are dripping, especailly in low light situations, so they are a good idea to try.

For a protective cover for bedding, carpet, et al., I highly recommend a disposible paper table cloth- mine are made by 'Chinet' and are soft paper backed by some sort of plastic, and even come with four little tabs of tape to anchor them.

Stay warm,
Lawrence

wax wax and more wax.............. gotta love the wax....... wax on fun wax of not so fun a lot of clean up but in the end well worth the artistic fun you have with the wax. I prefer purple an black wax. but thats just me.

Alright, so this is just a personal opinion, but using the parafin pots or crock pots (or even pots of boiling water) seems just too industrial for me. I miss the flame...

Yeah, you have to wait a good half hour after lighting a novena candle before playing with it. And yes you have to light 4 or 5 just to have enough wax melted at any one time to keep the scene going. But for pure performance value, a scene that involves dripping wax from lit candles is just so much more aestheticaly pleasing (at least to my eyes) than anything done with bulk melted wax.

Of course, YMMV...

Yours,
Taggard
