The reason we have NAFTA is the same reason we have troops all over the world, to protect certain people's economic interests.. I wrote a paper on NAFTA and the point of the matter is that this "agreement" was written by corporations that wanted and needed it, not by politiicians. It was written by corporate lawyers, not the people it most directly impacts. Unions were not offered a seat at the negotiations.. corporations and their lobbyists were.

Everytime something like CAFTA comes out unions and antiglobalists protest it... these protests are always more bloody and riot police are more heavy handed than the antiwar ones... I won't go to them because I value my teeth and I really do not want a hose turn on me, pepperspray or tear gas used on me.. There is a reason these protests are treated this way, and that there is not much discussion of this stuff in the corporate media.. it is more threatening to the powers that be than we little hippie flowerchildren are....

Chaingang -> RE: Where are the "High Paying Manufacturing Jobs" that Clinton promised us if "NAFTA" passed? (10/5/2006 1:42:48 PM)

The real problem is simply this: there really are people out there that cannot do higher intelligence labor behind a desk or behind a computer. Further, a lot of those kinds of jobs can be off-shored just as easily as everything else. They are training people abroad to become legal researchers and support for lawyers here in the states - so none of those kinds of jobs are safe. The only jobs that may be safe are those that require someone's physical presence in the U.S. or that require a specific license to conduct the activity.

What does that leave?

A vast sea of unskilled labor jobs that pay fuck all.

The question remains as to who will be able to afford those good and services even though they are offered for less and less money as time passes. I understand that the people that work at Walmart cannot always afford all the things they need even there at their supposed rock bottom prices.

What we need are decent paying jobs for people that will never become well educated and highly skilled workers because they live here too. Some are your neighbors. It's like punishing them for their lack of ability when the lack of ability is most likely punishment enough.

And thus the middle-class disappears from the United States of Bullshit.

The unemployment rate in this Country is about 4.7%. The lowest in the Countries history. The stock market is at an all time high. It seems to me the economy is doing pretty well.

Exactly this problem exists in the UK and yet we seem to survive.
We have massively expensive Welfare services on top as well.
There's just something I cant grasp.

Missed out that Chaingang was talking about low skilled sector of the economy.

Holy crap, this tired shit again?!!!

The numbers are totally wonky. Bush has made sure that numbers would go his way. They literally changed how those percentages were calculated a few years ago to favor the corruption of this administration. Where have you been for 5 years?

Get your facts straight. Damn.

General point.

This discussion sounds a little like a 21st century version of being Ludite. Companies see it in their interest to offshore certain jobs but they still need a market for those services. The market might well need some reforms but reform doesn't mean that western economies need to be fossilized into the way the economy worked in the 20th century.

However, people keep voting for the same old parties with the same old interests so they only have themselves to blame.

"Hmm. Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter."

Care to flesh out the kinds of reforms you have in mind?

The addition of umpteen-thousand service jobs mainly specializing in burger flippers if I remember correctly i, and the skewed reasoning of emperor bush-wipe doesn't really impress Me.

Importing jobs The Democrats are creating panic by complaining about corporations "exporting jobs" by opening operations in other countries. What they don't say is that we are also "importing jobs," as foreign companies open up operations in the United States. Furthermore, the number of imported jobs far exceeds the number of exported jobs, and has a bigger positive impact on our economy.....

Individual home ownership in the U S is also at an all time high. The people buying these homes aren't flipping burgers. There are many very good jobs out there.

The practice of exporting customer service jobs to India will be a thing of the past for many Companies. AT&T will end this in 2007. It is a very big complaint of our customers and those jobs will be coming back on shore.

Companies in Britain have already started to repatriate jobs for this reason.

The problem is that the people in govt. are doing what they and their financial supporters want, NOT what The People want.
Our govt can't (or won't) defend our borders but Bush wanted "$4 billion for Iraqi border security."
I think this govt. is dysfunctional.

Actually Lous Dobbs does more work about this issue than any other reporter I have seen, and he is not a democrat

popeye1250 -> RE: Where are the "High Paying Manufacturing Jobs" that Clinton promised us if "NAFTA" passed? (10/5/2006 4:17:42 PM)

I like Lou Dobbs, he seems to have the gift of common sense.
Maybe he'll run for President in '08. I know he'd get my vote!
That's the type of people we need in office not career politicians, lawyers, and beurocrats.

A global economy has both good and bad points; it enables others around the world to have a better life (which helps alleviate violence, as well), it decreases the cost of some goods in this country, and it enables people in other countries to buy our goods.

It also brings an end to some good jobs here, and workers face pay cut demands to compete.

What would  happen if you took a country, one that had pretty much every natural resource needed to survive, and closed its borders, and all of the economy, beginning to end, was kept in country? Could a high standard of living be maintained?

Property values are falling, interest rates are rising, and foeclosure rates are going up... the housing market is going soft and it is over inflated in almost every region... people are sitting on houses that are depreciating in value... scary situation
