Apparently I was misinformed. I'd love to be a nurse as soon as they find a cure for HIV and Hep C......if they don't already have one. Pharmaceutical companies like for cures to remain hidden to keep their profits up. These diseases are very scary. I'd rather fall to my death as an iron worker than catch a "non-curable" virus that will kill me slowly. I wonder if that's why there aren't enough nurses?

Lord have mercy, after reading this thread I think this is my errant sister Connie come over to the dark side. Just bringing her "interesting" ideology along for the ride.

Okay.  Pharmaceutical companies like to work on developing cures, but not release them, because lack of sales raises their profits?

You again are misinformed. It is rare that a healthcare worker gets one of these diseases. Yes it is a risk but thats a small one. Not everyone can work in healthcare. We have thing calle PPE's . When used as they should be transmission of contaminated body fluids to a healthcare worker is very rare.

It is one of the most sought after jobs. Nurse recruiters are in very high demand. Don't know about the ying yangs though.

Herpes is a good example. A college in Florida came up with a single injection that would prevent outbreaks and shedding, making the virus impossible to spread to others. Pharmceutical companies aren't interested because they're making too much money off of Valtrex.

I have worked in healthcare for years now, and if someone follows the proper procedures, it's very, very unlikely they will ever catch Hep C, or HIV.  That is why the universal precautions exist, it's to prevent things like this from happening.  You no longer put the lids back on a syringe, you have eye protection, gloves, even the wraps to put over scrubs.

This is a job that won't go anyplace, and we do need more people doing it.  I know a lot of us would like to give excellent care to patients, but there aren't enough of us to go around.

Yes, there is a chance there, but I am glad some of us look past that chance so that others have someone to take care of them when they are ill.

"A college in Florida came up with a single injection that would prevent outbreaks and shedding, making the virus impossible to spread to others." defiantbadgirl wrote......and from the website she cited....."The technology can potentially to be used as a preventative vaccine against all outbreaks"

i have italicised two rather relevant words. Basically we have another assumption made by someone who based an assertion about nursing jobs based on an overheard conversation. Clearly the new treatment, promising as it is, is as yet untested. To assert that it would work, when the source only uses the word potentially shows muddy thinking......oh, and defiantbadgirl, i am still waiting for your definition of immigrant.

She was saying the hospital lays off nurses because someone cant pay. All taxpayers end up paying the bill. Nurses don't get laid off because someone can't pay. If that was true there wouldnt be any nurses. That was my point.

I understand that, but thank you for clarifying.

I have nothing against people of different races philosophy. What I do have a problem with is companies replacing hard working loyal employees with immigrants who have B1 Visas. Immigration shouldn't be allowed until a law is passed to prevent companies from doing this. Then let people come over slowly so as not to create job shortages. I know my ancestors immigrated here long ago, but times were different then. One could pick a piece of land, cut some trees down, and build a house. Now we have house payments, land payments, car payments..........everything costs money and money comes from jobs. My ancestors immigrated here, but them being here  didn't threaten job security.

You seem to be under the impression that before your ancestors came here, there was just this big vast piece of land waiting to be inhabited. There were people living here, already. They were pretty happy with things the way they were before the Mayflower arrived. Their entire way of life was most certainly threatened by the newcomers.

Where did you see in that article that a pharm company won't produce. It says they are looking for a pharm company. Lots of things go into selling a would be product to a pharm company. Lots of legal things. Copyrights, patents etc. It takes years for a drug to be FDA approved. Clinical studies have to be done etc.

I feel bad for the Native Americans. They didn't even claim the land as their own, they thought nobody should own land and it should be shared. I've always had very high respect for Native Americans. Let me put this another way. If I were an immigrant, I would refuse to take a job that would cause a loyal employee who had been working for that company for years to be terminated. Why? Because it's morally wrong.

Lou Dobbs of CNN has a book out titled "The War on the Middle Class."
I think he's right when he calls our goverment "Dysfunctional."
Boy, this "Global Economy" is turning out to be another disaster!
But, not if you're in the .10 of 1% who are getting rich from it!
If they suceed in killing off the middle class in this country there'll be no-one to buy their products.

I was born here, that makes me a native American.
