I have seen several movies that portrayed Bdsm in one form or fashion. But is recently saw on Called  "Secretary" with James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal (Sister to Jake Gyllenhaal). Very good movie and brings a odd point and new light on Just how some relationships in the Lifestyle begin.

Look at the trailer and read reviews please buy or rent i loved it. [:D]

I thought it was great as well.  The biggest problem I had was in believing that an intelligent man of his age would be so conflicted about his desire to dominate women.

Mainstream D/s movies like The Secretary can be viewed on line free of charge at several websites and you can see find an Online Video Directory at OVGuide.com of all places. I've not been able to find anywhere to "view" (without downloading) The Story of O, or The Pet, so if anyone has any resources, do let me know. Bit Torrent does not seem to work on my computer.

The Secretary is a very good movie, and probably the most true to life (as far as the lifestyle is concerned) that you'll see out of Hollywood. Although it is not totally accurate, in my opinion, at least it doesn't make any huge untrue assumptions, like some others I could mention.

I have seen The Pet. If you have not yet seen it, be aware that it is highly inaccurate, and portrays the lifestyle in a very  unflattering light. Human traffickers and black market organ harvesters will also find it unrealistic.

I love the secretary it's probably one of my all time favorites, I feel like I can relate do to my current but at the same time I just feel like hollywood has to make best case scenerio out of everything.  Why does everyone have to end up in a relationship when aired on tv.

I wish that was the case but fact is that many of us dont end up that way.

Aswad -> RE: BDSM portrayal in Movies (6/11/2007 3:31:41 AM)

Someone recommended the Norwegian movie "Naboer" (lit.: neighbours) to me for this reason, though I haven't seen it yet. It was described as starting out a little heavy on the S&M side, then going off in the wrong direction, but still being pretty nice. It's probably available elsewhere, too, and English subtitles aren't all that uncommon, so it might be worth checking out.

i adore the secretary, it's oddly, a very polarizing movie though. people either love it or hate it.

The Secretary was good...The Pet sucked rocks...I do not have a slave so I can harvest organs from him!

AMEN!!!

Personally, I liked "The Secretary," But I'd have to pick "9 1/2 weeks" as My favorite. While it did leave a bit to be desired, I could easily relate to the character played by Mickey Rourke.

aggressiveblkdom -> RE: BDSM portrayal in Movies (6/13/2007 8:29:12 PM)

I definitely enjoyed The Secretary. What I enjoyed about it was that while it showed the sexual aspect of bondage it focused more on the mental aspect of it, the subtleties. The only gripe I had was the whole fasting scene towards the end. As a Dom I felt that was a bit unrealistic and more like a plot-ploy to bring the lifestyle out to the general vanilla public. But all in all, it was a very good movie.

littledove00 -> RE: BDSM portrayal in Movies (6/14/2007 12:20:42 PM)

that's not fasting. that's lee proving her submission. mr. grey told her not to move until he came back.

Absolutemaster -> RE: BDSM portrayal in Movies (6/14/2007 12:27:30 PM)

Bitter Moon is an interesting film.

And I have been intrigued by the sound of Boxing Helena, although I've never seen it.

AwakenedStar -> RE: BDSM portrayal in Movies (6/14/2007 5:38:08 PM)

honestly, i was not a fan of the secretary.
the whole thing was like "look at me being kinky! aren't i so strange and intriguing?!"

there were some pretty hot scenes in it, but generally speaking it was a little obtuse for my taste.

aggressiveblkdom -> RE: BDSM portrayal in Movies (6/14/2007 8:55:00 PM)

Good point. I think what I meant to say was as a Dom that portrayed him as a bit irresponsible. Considering the fact that she came back after being dismissed was great testament to her choice to submit to him. But now he decides to draw it out and let a public spectacle be made of your relationship? Like I said....to me it seemed more of a plot-ploy to "bring the lifestyle out to the vanilla public".

DragonNphoenix -> RE: BDSM portrayal in Movies (6/15/2007 1:16:05 AM)

I loved The Secretary.   I really liked that they went into the mental side of it, not just the sexual.

Btw ~ I read a great article on MSNBC the other day about BDSM.  It was in 'American Unzipped'.  The reporter went to a Fetish event in Cali and reported on the event as well as interviewing people in the lifestyle.  He goes into detail about how everyone there was a 'normal' person, that they did not 'Issues' or mental problems.  (I have read articles that say that...)  It was very good.  I would recogmend everyone read it.  It is on the MSNBC website.

frustratinggirl -> RE: BDSM portrayal in Movies (6/15/2007 7:37:52 AM)

I liked it, i saw it way before i understod what bdsm meant but it definatly connected on some level, love the ending  where shes cleaning and leaves the roach on the bed on purpose.  The mental side of it really mirrored something in me. Plus I always had a thing for James Spader, what a geek!  We need more movies that reflect that ill say, that must have been the last "recent" movie portraying SM as its theme.
