When I was younger I was VERY skinny.  Everyone hated me. I was ridiculed.  I was ugly and dorky.  Of course, since I was skinny and not fat, I got no sympathy. And now, people wonder why I am such a bitch.

These days being oversized is in style.  Being able to "eat like a man" and consume mass quantities of food is something that is marketed to show a "healthy" appetite.  Why is there a double-standard concerning obesity as opposed to being thin?    It is OK to be fat but NOT ok to be skinny..  Why is that?  I  never had anyone compliment me on being thin. Instead, I was insulted. I was asked if I was sick.  Skinny people have feelings too.  Why are only the chubby folks given consideration?  Who is the majority, after all?

I never had an eating disorder.  I was just "skinny".. Oh BTW... being called "skinny" is NOT a compliment.  It is a derrogatory comment!   Of course, I should take it, and not call someone who is obese "fat", right?

Nicole Ritchie made big news because her bones show.  But there are many over weight celebs who embrace their body image and there is no news camera there, questioning how unhealthy their fat is?  I am not saying one is better than the other- I am merely pointing out a double standard.

Why can the blacks have a music award and a black Miss America, but the other nationalities can't?   Why are there music awards for blacks , and tv stations for the black and nothing for other nationalities?  Why does society think thses double-standards are acceptable??

I , like many who claim to be open minded, really are just as biased and closed minded as the rest of society.

Before accusing others of bigotry.. look in the mirror.

I realize you said you double posted because you said you were afraid the thread might get pulled, but others are answering the other one, you might want to delete one of them.....just a suggestion, or they might get pulled just because you didn't.

I wonder why the other thread was pulled and not this one. As everyone was agreeing that there is bigotry and that obese/overweight people being more acceptable and not allowed to be abused yet thin people are allowed to be abused. Fair treatment.

I wonder if the idiots who called myself a bigot will step in here as most people will be agreeing with the op

My guess is that it wasn't pulled for the fat/skinny content.

I do not know why you are obsessed with what other people weigh, perhaps it is some form of obsessive thoughts?

People who starve themselves to be too thin are pitied and are ill. Perhaps you have not seen the many articles about anorexia and bulemia

I also agree there is the double standard and bigots are those who only have a narrow vision of what people should or she not be according to their views.

There is bigotry about the obese, and those overly thin.  I think if you are too thin, everyone thinks you have an eating disorder, if you are too big, they think all you do is eat.  I think I sort of screw with that theory though, I am bigger, yet I have had bulimia for over four years now.  I have my metabolism so messed up from the bulimia nervousa, anything I eat pretty much sticks with me.  I can lose, but it takes a lot longer than it ever did.

I think there was and will always be double standards in this world based on size, sex, nationality, and religion..... it will exist as long as mankind does, though it's sad to think about.

Oh.... I agree. But my post was addressing the double standard of how Ariel's threads keep disapearing. ; }

I do not agree.  Chubby or fat is not in style.  It has not been in this century (although certainly in previous centuries, chubby, but never fat, was considered desirable..  this is evidenced in art from the period) and might never be, although the way trends seem to be cyclical it is certainly possible.  The reason I say this is because if you look at all the models and all the advertising campaigns you will not see one chubby or fat chick.  If you look in magazines, particularly fashion magazines, you will not see one fat person.  Overeating is not in style.  Wearing a size 30 pant is not in fashion and thus relegated to a select few specialty shops.  It seems like it is the opinion of the agencies that noone wants to see a fat person (and to be perfectly honest, I do not find it appetizing when someone's intestines, whether male or female, or so bloated from over endulging that the stomach sags well below the crotch..  It is actually disturbing to Me).

Even the media push is to emphasize the risk to a person's health from overindulging one's self and being obese.

I just can not see any evidence of your assertions in the mainstream.  I see quite the opposite.  I do see a specialized niche that do appreciate obese people (M/F), but certainly not to the point that you assert.

models were originally created to show off the clothes, not be a fashion icon for women... personally looking anemic is not my idea of looking healthy either.  i don't think models have ever influenced the male of our species to work off their beer guts!

Finding a specific body type or skin color more attractive than another is not bigotry. Its personal aesthetic and everyone has the right to their own.

Bigotry is:
  • making character and personality assumptions based solely on those aesthetics.
  • irrational and continuous hatred of individuals based on those aesthetics that can not be changed (ie gender, skin color).
  • irrational and continuous hatred of individuals who at one time was in conflict with those aesthetics (ie body size, philosophies) but has since changed them.

True.  Why has it become all too easy for individuals to label everyone that does not agree with them as bigots?  We see it all too often in the world today.  Hell, we even see it far too often on this board.  It is simply a manipulation tactic.  An attempt to manipulate another individual to align with the views of the offended party.  That is My take, for what it is worth (if anything).

I could not agree moreā€¦those features colors and body sizes that intrigue and excite me have nothing at all to do with bigotry, they emit from within and simply do, while other features colors and sizes do not. However, I am a vain man firmly fixed in the passions I
embrace and some form of bigotry may play a roll in how I view certain aspects of who and what I am.

Okay Number One........I have to ask this question. When I go out in public, it is usually in Iowa City IA. A college town with way more than it's fair share of adorable young college bodies. I see bodies of all sizes having a good time, attractive and not so much so, over and under weight alike. The same for the older crowd in the same town which comprises all sorts of interesting, well educated, intelligent adults. On the rare occasion I go to a local function (small towns near the farm) I see again, bodies of all shapes, sizes, ages, socializing, having fun. One thing I have NEVER EVER seen or heard is a discussion of why, he/she will not date/shag/hang out, with me because I am too fat/too skinny/ too white/ too brown/ etc etc etc....... So, my question is this. Just WHY is this online group of people so godawfulfuckingobsessed with this topic in all it's variations?????

Secondly, for some people I am too fat, for others too thin. Some will not like my hair colour, attitude, sense of humour, pets, where I live, too femme, not femme enough............guess what, I DON"T CARE!!! Those individuals are not part of my "circle of trust" so what the hell difference does it really make? This is the real world, not everyone is going to like me. That's just fine and dandy with me because I sure as hell don't like alot of them.

I just don't get it. Life is a smorgasbord of variety, I have the right to turn down the spinach in favour of the corn. You might prefer the spinach. I am not going to call you a terrible person for it.
