I agree MistressMaamNH, all physicians should be trained, can I start sending some to you?  Most can learn some humility.

Anyway, I just took 25mg's and I'm gettin' sleepy....night all....

Mistress MHN I'll try the half a dose then. When I've shown bites like 3 at one time have sprung up. They're often in impossible places to reach alone too like middle of back lol. last time there was one on each thigh and one on my hip that sprang up almost at once. The reactions a very itchy very painful one. on a scale of 1 to 10,

antihistamines knock you out. Those are indeed safe to use as sleep aids. Look at the box of a sleep aid. What is it? Antihistmaine!

well, benodryl is a must for me. at least it was in korea. great sleep aid, and oh so important for allergic reaction to fleas, (weird allergy huh?) but it stays in the system for soooo long. hehe, i still have an im setting for "benodryl zombie" meaning = yes, i'm here, sort of.        Phoenix

My doctor perscribed 50 mg of benadryl as a sleep aid for me. For the first week it got me to sleep after about 45 mins or so and i slept great. Now i take it at midnight and i'm still awake at four. *sighs* I'm thinking maybe i will take two at a time now.

I think everybody is different because when I take Benadryl I get knocked out in about 10 minutes.  My father, who had peripheral vascular disease, had a lot of pain and at one time, tried to take Tylenol PM.   This medication did not even affect him and he was wired but I believe the pain from the PVD was so great, he had difficulty getting to sleep.

zindyslave -> RE: Benadryl making people feel druged and not in positive ways. (4/15/2007 11:56:21 AM)

deadbluebird it is dangerous to take more than the prescribed amount of any medicine. You should talk to your doctor before taking two of them at one time. And I know people have said that Benadryl isn't addictive but some people become dependent on it to sleep. I know I did when I was younger and taking it for allergies it took me a month to get back to a normal sleeping pattern without the benadryl.

thanks for the advice zindy hun, i'll talk it over with my Dr first.  i already don't have a normal sleeping pattern which is why i was prescribed it, so i'm already dependent on it. it isnt an issue with me.. not being able to sleep Is an issue though.

i have VERY severe insomnia due to MS and have for the past 3 years taken benedryl daily both to help sleep and to counter act the severe itching my morphine causes.  doctors occasionally prefer it for sleep as it's not habit forming, but yes, some people get jittery instead of drowsy..i used to, but found that a full dose of it (50mgs up to 3 times daily) helps with allergies and sleep and sometimes both at once!

Is this what benadryl usualy does to most people? if so why?

Benadryl is sometimes used as a sleeping aid for the simple reason that it's a first generation antihistamine. Ask your doc to find a different antihistamine for you.

Not all sleep aids are antihistamines, although most OTC ones are. Usually, one will use benzodiazepines or neuroleptics (wtf!) for this. Barbiturates or GHB in refractory cases. Benzos, barbiturates or GHB (here in Europe, the brand is Xyrem) will leave you rested and functional the next day if you use them properly. Antihistamines and neuroleptics will leave you wasted for hours-to-days or days-to-years, respectively.

Tolerance develops really quickly. Ask for a referral to a sleep specialist, as well as some advice on sleep hygiene. In the meantime, you could ask for nitrazepam, zolpidem or diazepam. If you don't use them more than a couple of days consecutively, and then take an equal number of days without, they shouldn't usually lose their effectiveness for a while.

Lunesta is approved for long-term sleep aid use, and doesn't usually lose its effectiveness. Not everyone can tolerate it, though.

Rebound insomnia is a well-understood and fairly easy-to-manage consequence of cutting a sleep aid without tapering it slowly and improving sleep hygiene. It has nothing to do with addiction, although some sleep aids can be addictive. Antihistamines aren't, though.

Have you tried switching benadryl for something else, for instance orphenadrine (norflex, disipal, banflex, flexon, etc)? It's closely related, but has a more positive interaction with morphine, including a potential for reducing tolerance buildup, as I recall.

That said, other things than morphine might cause less of an itch.

HotFaerieMama -> RE: Benadryl making people feel druged and not in positive ways. (6/18/2007 10:55:24 AM)

Y'all are all lucky. you can take benadryl when you need it. I can't take it or any of the store brand versions I'll break out in hives 24 hours after I've taken it and they last for 2 weeks. found this out the hard way when I  was younger. and I have to very carefully read the ingredient lists of any medications I buy so I don't end up with hives.
