Actually, i don't care how they do it. As long as we are teaching the masses the reality of something, i think it is fucking awesome. :)

Have you ever heard of the Brit soap opera "Coronation Street" - one of the longest running programmes in the UK, at I guesstimate, about 40 years?

They had a TS woman come into the story a few years back, and for a while she was very much centre stage in what is a many threaded storyline. It was so wonderful to have such a character, with all her trials and tribulations occurring in a northern city (Manchester) where attitudes are not exactly 21st century, and most importantly for her to be so normal (if there is such a thing!). I dont watch the show so I'm not up with it that much, but she was on screen when I switched over the other day to wait for the show that follows it. It was a birthday party for one of the older characters, in the pub, and she was there and welcome - just another person, along with the guy she had taken up with a few years back.

I'm glad the US show you mentioned is doing something similar. Its important as a means of disseminating the message that trans people are not sexual deviants, drag queens and so on, and for everyone to see that they are just ordinary, every day people. I dont know how much of the growing acceptance there is in the UK, came from shows like Coronation Street which dealt so well with the whole subject, but I'm sure it helped a lot as the show is one of the most widely watched here.
