siamsa24 -> Scarring (11/28/2006 1:23:28 PM)

There is something that has been bothering me lately.  I am getting married next summer and due to my work I have heavy scarring on my hands and arms.  Obviously my hands are going to be on display that day and I am ashamed of all the marks on them.
Is there anything besides vitamin E and and OTC scar elimination items that I can try on them? I have pictures of them if it would help.

I recommend Maderma

www.mederma.com/

** I am a former cutter and found this product to help alot in scarring...

CalliopePurple -> RE: Scarring (11/28/2006 2:53:09 PM)

My sister used to cut herself and used vitamin E capsules to make the scars less visible. Just a bottle of the ones she was able to stick with a safety pin and rub over her forearms a couple tmes a day for...about a month, I think.

Vitamin E is like a wonder drug for skin.  It will help fade the scars, but probably wont make them disappear (depending on their severity) but you have to use it consistantly.  Id say twice per day and at night if you can cover the area with gauze or something that will keep the oil from rubbing off, it helps alot.  Get the pure Vit E oil.  It's  a little pricey but it goes a very long way and the bottle lasts a long time.

I've tried many of the OTC items and I used viatmin E for about 2 months.

I have some pictures, I can try to upload them

buy aloe vera capsules at the health food store and put them on your skin...that helps the skin alot.

i would think that your scar are ont he old side...but i use a product called scar guard...they have both an old version and a new version...I havent used the old scar version but i have used the new scar version and well i had a double mastectomy and then reconstruction and quite frankly my scars are barely noticable  and well that is the only thing i can tell you....  this product is on the unusual side where as  most are massaged intot the scared area...this product goes on like a clear nailpolish...then it dries and after a few hours....you peel  it off and then replace it...i think it is a twice or three times a day item...i know i took mine on and off too often  but well iwas dealing with the itch of fresh suture lines at the time...so well it was anxious...but well there ya go  my advice and recommendation

have a great day and good luck

I talked to an occupational therapist at work recently about the same thing and she said that there is something that they use with people with severe burns and scars, it sounds like it is a type of cover-up and you then use foundation or something to match your skin tone.  Sorry I am so vague as I never followed up the info, maybe there is an occupational therapist that can tell you more about whatever this product is.  Or maybe a makeup artist/beautician could give you some ideas for your actual wedding day.

All the best for your upcoming wedding.

ps.  I feel confident in saying that I am sure your husband to be loves all of you, scars and all. :)

Ben Nye theatrical makeup, if the scars are severe and/or really noticeable, finished with your regular pressed-powder might not be a bad idea. They make specialized cover-up makeup that is used to cover tattoos, etc. Google it if that seems to be what you are looking for. The nice thing I've found about it (I cover a really deep, dark scar in my cleavage) is that it doesn't rub off all over everything, especially if you get their finishing spray stuff. It's then rub-proof and water-proof. I also like that it comes in a wide variety of colors that can be blended for an exact match.

Otherwise, you could not worry about it- get a manicure, do what you can (I love Mederma), and realize that even scars are a part of your own beauty.

I agree with the aloe vera, also massage the scars, it assists in breaking down scar tissue.

Rose hip seed oil is wonderful for scars.  There were quite a few studes that indicate it is very effective.   Getting rid of scars though is time consuming and you can expect to use your remedy for a good six months.

hello

MistressTexas -> RE: Scarring (11/30/2006 12:57:29 AM)

(yay I get to sound like a nut job). I have a rather interesting reccomendation for you. A good exfoliator to help promote new skin growth. My personal reccomendation would be for Sugar by Fresh, but there are a couple other good ones too. Fresh is an expensive line, but its amazing quality (I'm such a product junkie.. this is really sad :P). I've actually used it myself to get rid of small, but older scars. Mmm and it smells sooooooooo great. It's one a ton of beauty awards too. I think its a wonderful investment if you're serious about getting your skin (not just scars) in wedding shape. Some other ones though: M.A.C scrub mask (for faces) is wonderful, and will moisturise as well. Never A Dull Moment by Origins is good, although not my fave. It has papaya in it (so it smells yummy), so the acidity of the fruit helps a bit as well. L'Occitane Shea Butter Exfoliating Foot Scrub is really effective, but I'm not a huge fan of the smell. One of my friends is quite addicted to it though, so its a matter of personal taste.
A recipe for an at home scrub (not as effective and will dry out your skin much more than any of the aforementioned products):
1/2 cup coarse-medium sea salt
1/2 cup coarse cofee grounds (unused lol)
1/4 cup liquid honey
enough water to make it into a spreadable paste.

Get in the shower for a few minutes to soften up your skin, and go to town. Theres some debate about caffeine reducing cellulite too, so hey, have fun with it. I reccomend exfoliating 2-4 times per week, and a deep moisturiser afterward... I would go off on wonderful moisturisers, but we would be here for a very long time.

Yes, Mederma is an over-the-counter thing, found in most drug stores near the band-aids and stuff. No perscription needed!

Go to the expensive make up counter at a high end department store.  They have wonderful water proof makeup specially blended to match your skin.  Many people use it to cover port wine stains (birthmarks) on their faces.  The coverage is amazing.

childoftheshadow -> RE: Scarring (12/2/2006 12:49:23 PM)

I can vouch for the mederma. I have 15ish keloid scars on my upper back ranging in size from about the size of a dime to nearly 3" across. I've been using mederma for a while now and they're looking much better. I know they'll never go away, but I'm pleased with the progress so far.

Anything you try will take time to work, don't expect them to go over night.

I wish you the best of luck.

Bio oil is good, as is emu oil.
