See: "Too much like hard work"

Basically, anyone who requires more work/attention than you think is really necessary. Generally, I find that this can be measured as the point at which one sighs and thinks the phrase "not again"

Also, anyone who has an irrational love for making your wallet empty and your credit card company weep with pleasure.

That's my understanding of it, anyway...

a person is described as high-maintenance if they require 'a lot of attention in order to function normally'.
Examples of high-maintenance behavior:

  • Having frequent professional cosmetic consultations, such as hair-dressing and manicures
  • Excessive vanity spending
  • Attention craving
  • Spending an hour in front of the mirror with a hair iron to flatten perfectly straight hair.
Alternatively, the term can refer to someone who requires a high emotional investment from their romantic or familial partner. Also, someone who spends a substantial amount of money or time on their appearance could be referred to as high-maintenance

    Excerpts from wikipedia.
Not all high maintenance people require finance from their partner.

Well, high maintenance describes a vanilla female friend who would like to be a much closer friend than she is, but it's not going to happen.  I had to set some serious boundaries with her.  She began calling me for anything and everything, like when her computer monitor went out, she lost the address of a restaurant, broke a fingernail, was spoken to unkindly by her boyfriend, needed to know where to get her hair done, etc., etc., etc.  She would love call here at least once a day and keep me on the phone for hours, but that is not something I need in my life.  She volunteered to "help" me with a project I was working on, and it took ten times longer than if I had done it myself!  She belongs to one of the same metaphysical organizantions that I do and I basically ended up telling her we could be friends while at the meetings, but DON'T CALL ME, I'LL CALL YOU.  And of course, I never call her!  She's gotten the hint.
