ORIGINAL: slavejali A lot of people say they want an intelligent dominant or an intelligent submissive. What does intelligence mean to you? What are the nuts and bolts of you coming to the conclusion that someone is intelligent? To me it means other things other than the ability to comprehend physical, mental or emotional things. Intelligence to me incorporates the ability to put into action "right action" within a given situation. It means to me to be able to distinguish whats worth putting effort into and whats not within any of lifes situations. It means they have knowledge of self that is beyond identifying themselves with the circumstances of life. Intelligence means to me that the person has the ability to not only learn from their mistakes but can also learn from others mistakes so as to prevent them from making the same ones themselves. Thats a start of what I percieve to be intelligence...and a person who has those attributes may not even be able to spell 'intelligence' or put it into a sentence.... I think you've done a good job of relating what intelligence means to you. For me, I see intelligence as being a good composite of common sense and education from learning institutions and street smarts. Common sense is something as simple as knowing when to come in out of the rain. Education gained from a learning institution enables someone to be able to get somewhere in life, yes but it also helps to develop an interest in learning for its' own sake and not just for practical purposes. It also helps to teach us that learning is done through many means...reading, conversing, watching, listening. How well you do each is a reflection of intelligence. To me, learning that is only geared towards the practical might make very good, pragmatic sense but it leaves a sense of unfulfillment. Finally, street smarts (to me) is the ability to discern right from wrong, whether it be in the people we meet or in the actions we take note of during the day...from others and (if we're a "good" street smart) in ourselves and in this way, be able to function well within society.
