A lot of people say they want an intelligent dominant or an intelligent submissive. What does intelligence mean to you? What are the nuts and bolts of you coming to the conclusion that someone is intelligent?

To me it means other things other than the ability to comprehend physical, mental or emotional things. Intelligence to me incorporates the ability to put into action "right action" within a given situation. It means to me to be able to distinguish whats worth putting effort into and whats not within any of lifes situations. It means they have knowledge of self that is beyond identifying themselves with the circumstances of life. Intelligence means to me that the person has the ability to not only learn from their mistakes but can also learn from others mistakes so as to prevent them from making the same ones themselves. Thats a start of what I percieve to be intelligence...and a person who has those attributes may not even be able to spell 'intelligence' or put it into a sentence....

Someone who can enrich my inner life.

Yiska -> RE: Intelligence? (1/15/2007 4:51:32 PM)

It would be someone who interests compliment mine but they would have their own interests. I'd have to say to have the ability to read and write.

Amaros -> RE: Intelligence? (1/15/2007 4:59:06 PM)

Sounds like a reasonable definition to me.

From a more clinical standpoint, I'd distill at least part of that down to: the ability to discern the real from the abstract.

Intelligence is often described in terms of our ability to grasp abstractions, mathmatics, symbols, etc., but I believe true intelligence involves being able to tell what is in front of your eyes from whatever it is you want to see.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Intelligence? (1/15/2007 4:59:14 PM)

Person who can make me wet watching Jeopardy together :)

Intelligence is such a multi-faceted and multi-level concept.  I don't need someone who is highly intelligent on all levels, but I certainly need someone who is fairly higher than the norm on a lot of basic levels.

But I judge them the same way I do anything- shared time and experiences together.

Devilslilsister -> RE: Intelligence? (1/15/2007 5:09:30 PM)

Ahhh.. intelligence.  I havent a definition for it, but i can spot it when its there.  As i am told and believe, there are two types.  Book smarts and street smarts.  Some have both, some have either or.  I think, intelligence is knowing what works and what doesnt.

I also think that there isnt any broad all knowing intelligence.  My father has intelligence beyond anything i've ever seen, yet he hasnt any intelligence when it comes to emotional intelligence.  Nor has he much when it comes to people intelligence.  My mother has intelligence in some areas and is completely at a loss (in my book) in other areas.

I think it goes like that for everyone.  No one is completely intelligent in all areas of life.

I also think knowing the right thing to do and doing it are two different things.  I also think intelligence is a very tricky thing to describe.  Yet for some reason, it can be easy to spot.  ha

sweetnurseBBW -> RE: Intelligence? (1/15/2007 5:12:03 PM)

Well for one that they have common sense. It can be hard to find. Intelligence to me isn't about having book knowledge or numerous degrees. It is about having common sense and the ability for grow as a person. Someone that is always open to learning new things or exploring them.

bandit25 -> RE: Intelligence? (1/15/2007 5:16:36 PM)

I agree jali, but I also think we all have our own "feelings" about intelligence.  Oh sure, one can post the definition of intelligence...for me, it's the ability to carry on a conversation.  I don't even care (well, not THAT much) what the subject is.  I want someone who will/can talk with me.  I must say, though, I do like a person who puts forth the effort.  What I mean is, sure, one may not be able to spell intelligence, but he sure knows where the spell check is.

gooddogbenji -> RE: Intelligence? (1/15/2007 5:17:23 PM)

For me, it's three different kinds - Book, street, and people smarts.

Booksmart involves a decent education and the will to improve on their knowledge.  It also incorporates the ability to discuss theories and ideas in a productive way.

Streetsmarts are things which keep us alive, such as not reading the newspaper while running down the stairs with a bucket of knives in high heels.  It's the real world application of knowledge.  Knowing the statistical chances of getting hit by a car does you no good if you don't look both ways.

People smart means being able to deal with people in a way that only pisses off your mark.  Avoiding  drama, discerning between an idiot and a decent person, those types of things.

I look for a decent level of all three, because one alone leads to strange, strange children.

Yours,

benji

They must:

1, Be able to spell every day words (spelling the word playing as plaing is a definite turn off)

2. They must know their multiplication tables (duh......doesn't  9 x 6 = 22)

I think you've done a good job of relating what intelligence means to you.  For me, I see intelligence as being a good composite of common sense and education from learning institutions and street smarts.  Common sense is something as simple as knowing when to come in out of the rain.  Education gained from a learning institution enables someone to be able to get somewhere in life, yes but it also helps to develop an interest in learning for its' own sake and not just for practical purposes.  It also helps to teach us that learning is done through many means...reading, conversing, watching, listening.  How well you do each is a reflection of intelligence.
To me, learning that is only geared towards the practical might make very good, pragmatic sense but it leaves a sense of unfulfillment.  Finally, street smarts (to me) is the ability to discern right from wrong, whether it be in the people we meet or in the actions we take note of during the day...from others and (if we're a "good" street smart) in ourselves and in this way, be able to function well within society.

MyNameisMaam -> RE: Intelligence? (1/15/2007 5:39:39 PM)

To me, intelligence means that he has a clue about what's going on in the world around him; he has opinions about it but is willing to hear mine too; he has a smart wit about him; he can zip the one liners or keep his mouth shut all at the appropriate times; he can beat me at trivial pursuit but doesn't embarass me by actually doing it; and, he has a constant thirst to learn more than he already knows now.

I would say the ability to learn.

The motivation to improve is something different or so some of my most intelligent students demonstrate when they clearly can learn but choose not to or choose to do other things.

For me I need someone with both the ability to learn and the motivation to do so.

juliaoceania -> RE: Intelligence? (1/15/2007 5:47:28 PM)

I need to be with someone I perceive as intelligent.

This to me means that they can not only learn new concepts, but that they can take what they have learned in a variety of places and apply it to other aspects of their lives. Many people can memorize things, and that is a wonderful form of intelligence, but I desire the person that can take what they remember and apply it in unexpected ways to new situations.

It is one thing to be technically intelligent according to Western Civilization standards, but many who are the most intelligent often have no desire to learn. Give me someone that is excited by new ideas over someone that isn't but has a high IQ
