http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/local/states/pennsylvania/counties/chester_county/16522093.htm  Christian activists yesterday promised to appeal the dismissal of their federal court claim that Philadelphia officials infringed on their freedom of speech when they blocked anti-homosexual protesters at a 2004 Center City gay festival.

i think there are some things that should just be sacred. people should have the right to be together and not have to worry about negativity being spouted at them. i mean, i'm sure that skinheads at an naacp meeting would be blocked; i doubt that people would not be up in arms about anti-muslim activists barging into an islamic culture festival...or pagans demonstrating at a church function, for that matter...so why would anyone even think this would be acceptable?

Celeste43 -> RE: Christian activists at a gay festival (1/24/2007 6:41:59 PM)

It's a new angle but will of course fail. Free speech ends at yelling fire in a crowded theater and them interrupting a gay festival is the equivalent of that.

Just like skinheads interrupting the Million Man March would have been.

Only an excuse to force their  views nonconsensually on others and deprive others of equal rights. They want to have a Christian festival, they need to apply for permits, buy insurance and post bonds to cover the police coverage and garbage collection, just like every other group does.

untamedshysub -> RE: Christian activists at a gay festival (1/24/2007 7:02:59 PM)

sometimes people get so caught up in the circle of circistumances they lose site of the circle of influence. One of my daughters is bisexual and wiccan she was afraid to tell me so her sister told me. She was dating a guy I did not like and a girl that I did, so I called her up one day and said  I would just like you to know I love you for yhou and if I can have a choice I choose dae could not stand the guy. She was so stunned lol I said I raised you to accept people for who they are and that goes for me as well. I had to do some research on wiccan as I had no clue what that was but I do know that halloween is her new years so I called and wished her a happy new year.  I say all this to say not all christans are the same and those people who are giving us a bad name  will have to answer in their own time. who knows maybe they are gay and that allows them to participate and still keep the mask on their life.

Sigur -> RE: Christian activists at a gay festival (1/25/2007 12:01:57 AM)

As much as I'd like to agree with the court ruling, as long as they weren't preventing the meeting from taking place, I think they ought to have the right to protest.

"I may not like what you have to say, but I respect your right to say it" and all that. If we stop them from protesting here, whose to say that we won't be able to protest the G8 summit, or the RNC, or anything like that? I mean, "Free speech zones" piss me off enough as it is, we need to stop that shit before it goes any further.

Amaros -> RE: Christian activists at a gay festival (1/25/2007 1:33:51 PM)

The Christian protesters were disruptive, and could have filed for a counterprotest permit - essentially, they failed to obey the lawful orders issued by the officers at the scene - if they'd have been hippies, they probobly would have gotten their heads broken.

The police do have an interest in preventing full scale rioting, and it makes them nervous when you don't listen to them.

norcalfunsub -> RE: Christian activists at a gay festival (1/11/2008 12:38:49 PM)

people should be allowed to protest anything they want.  i enjoy going to the local coffee shop in my old "Bush Chaney in 04" shirt and exchanging dirty looks with varying people.  the problem with liberals is that they don't have a problem with what other people think as long as it's not a conservative viewpoint. conservative views are often met with hatred and a general lack of respect.  this isn't very libral at all, is it?  the few protesters at this event were mealy exercising there first amendment  rights.  look at it from there side,  we now live in a world where gay pride festivals are now acceptable but a nativity at Christmas has now somehow become offensive.  are we advocating tolerance or forcing acceptance?  their is a difference.  we tolerate the crying baby on the airplane but we don't have to accept or embrace it

I agree with a lot of this.  There is a problem with people being so PC that it's damaging.  For the record, I think that gay pride festivals and the nativity at Christmas are both perfectly alright.

Hi all...
I couldnt read the OP's article as the link wasnt valid. BUT, based only on what I read here, I disagree and hope the Christians win their rights to free speech as in the First Amendment. I dont have to aggree with what they say, in fact, I dont. But I do believe they have a right to assemble peacefully and state their opinions. Celeste, this isnt at all like crying "fire" in a theater, it is a counter demonstration. Courts have upheld the rights of neo nazis and others to speak...these people should have the same priveleges. Again, I dont have to like or aggree with what is being said to support a right to say it. I also detest any attempt at eroding first amendment rights.
Sincerely,
meesekite

PC is becoming a problem and it inhibits other people. personally i believe that people need to realize that not everything is meant to be harmful and not everyone is out to get you or another group. it's a shame that certain groups do preach tolerance yet have difficulty following through with it, but we are all human and have flaws.
as long as it's peaceful they should be allowed to protest but when it comes painful (emotionally, psychological or worse physically) the protest should disband.
Being who you are will always upset someone so you might as well just ignore them and be happy with who you are while the rest waste their lives wishing they could find something that would make them so blissful no one could ruin it.

ps. In no way am i saying that Bashing of any kind (christian, gay, racial, etc) is ok especially considering my family lol. i just think there is a peaceful way to settle things -puts on rose colored glasses-

Leatherist -> RE: Christian activists at a gay festival (1/11/2008 1:44:47 PM)

There is a difference between peaceful protests and being purposely disruptive of  an event.

The police seemed to have a pretty good handle on this one. I doubt that the disruptive parties in this case will get far, once those same officers testify as to thier conduct.

Happilymarried77 -> RE: Christian activists at a gay festival (1/11/2008 1:58:32 PM)

Liberals are by far, the most intolerant group in the country. They "accept" your viewpoint, as long as you agree with everything they say. If you disagree with any of their views, they become seething blowhards, and they cannot reconcile difference of opinons w/ their perception of the individual who holds that opinion. The syllogism is as follows: since you disagree with them and of course, their opinion is the only "moral" one, then ergo, you must be a hatefilled nazi or the like, b/c if you weren't you would agree with them. The church of liberalism is more intolerant and hatefilled than it's antithesis. People can protest anything, as long as it does not become violent. We don't have to like or agree with it, but they have the right to express their views. Free thought is not a crime...yet

PrizedPosession -> RE: Christian activists at a gay festival (1/11/2008 2:10:25 PM)

As a liberal i'm kind of dissappointed that so many of you have negative views about us with more liberal beliefs. Personally i don't think i am that intolerant. If you wish to have an intellectual conversation i have no problem but i will not be "seething" at you because we disagree. Sorry that you have encountered liberals who aren't pleasant with their beliefs. But in the end it comes to the person not their political beliefs that define someones reaction.

Some of them embrace the actual ideals that Christ taught-of love over law. And some are just modern Pharisees.

Would you say the same thing if the people getting together were the skinheads or the Ku Klux Klan? Should they be allowed to get together and talk about hatred of other people in a casual and comfortable atmosphere without worry that negativity against their negativity would be spouted at them?

This is also true, and important to remember.

Well, guys, if you're really interested in this case, you can read the judgment here instead of just speaking in the dark:

http://www.paed.uscourts.gov/documents/opinions/07D0096P.pdf

The key line, as far as I'm concerned, is this:

quote:

The Police and defendant Simmons told plaintiffs they had to move because they were blocking attendees’ access to the vendors’ booths.

You have the right to express your opinions, but you don't have the right to block other people's movement at a public event.

Also, despite what the Christian zealots want you to believe about this case, anti-homosexuality protesters were NOT prohibited from going inside the area of the rally.  The City had explicitly granted them permission to hold an "anti-LGBT" protest.  Just read the facts.

terrygirlyguy -> RE: Christian activists at a gay festival (1/25/2008 11:03:26 PM)

well get some Hells Angels (motorcycle) cd/tvs - Goths - gay/lesbian and go to one of these church groups that like to protect the gay lifestyle - we all go in sit and behave and join their service - We are sinners and are here to be saved - they would not know how to respond - just an Idea but it would work
