ORIGINAL: MisPandora Offering a handshake from the GLBT side to the fundie protesters drives them batshit crazy. They get on their mics and start spewing bible quotes like Mount Vesuvius spits lava. Bottom line is that if you believe that they should be allowed to disrupt our events, we should have a counter-vailing right to invade their churches, mosques, synagoues, temples, chapels and cathedrals and drown out their rituals by quoting from those writings we believe to be true and valid, through loudspeakers, jostling and abusing everyone who attends the church, carrying abusive placards, etc. I hope nobody in our world would actually want to take advantage of such "rights". Being dignified, self-controlled, tolerant, reasonable, etc. is not only more indicative of who and what we are, it is actually much more effective, because it makes it obvious to everyone that they are crazy, ignorant bigots. I don't consider the doctrine or dogma of any religion, faith, ideology, race, cuture or political party is in any way sacred or has any right to preferential treatment over any other. We must expect that our world-view should be respected as theirs - and take what steps we need to do to ensure it is. I recall an incident during one of the SM Pride marches in London. An outraged lady asked a policeman, "Why are they allowed to do this?" His deadpan reply was a classic; "Because we're a democracy, Ma'am."
