Personally I wish to knock every single Christian protester, be they at a GLBT rally or at an LDS temple and ask them if they really think that their hostile actions are going to make any that they protest re-think their values.

There are good Christians out there that live by the words of Christ and exercise "love one another, as I have loved you" and they just hold out their hand in friendship for those that wish to embrace it, sadly, they don't get the press coverage.

Amen to that.

http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/local/states/pennsylvania/counties/chester_county/16522093.htm  Christian activists yesterday promised to appeal the dismissal of their federal court claim that Philadelphia officials infringed on their freedom of speech when they blocked anti-homosexual protesters at a 2004 Center City gay festival.

I was the current Ms Philadelphia Leather during that Pride event, and it was a mess because the fundies got involved.  The GLBT crowd kept their cool though, and the Philly cops were fantastic in positioning the protesters to stay out of the way of the traffic (both foot and vehicle.)   We were implored not to fight with them or even argue, shout bible quotes at them, etc.   I was photographed and filmed with the protesters at the corner of Broad and Locust, taking a silent stand in the street beside them, showing that we have just as much of a right to be there as they do to express their beliefs. The photographs and video shot by two major news venues led the local news outlets on tv and in print all that week when the protesters claimed that they were abused by Philadelphia PD and had their rights infringed upon.  I am happy to see that the federal courts saw their claims to be as ridiculous as their calling in Fred Phelps to help them do their thing in subsequent years.  Since the 2004 Pride event, the aggression of anti-gay protesters has increased, as have the arrests for violence against event attendees.  It's a shame folks can't remain respectful of one another despite our differences.  From what I recall, the bible doesn't teach violence as the way to resolve matters.

The 2004 event caused significant changes to the way PPP produces the event.  2005 was behind giant chain link fences down on South Broad Street, and thereafter, the event moved to the Festival Pier on the Delaware River -- again, behind giant fences.  Philly PD always has a huge presence because of the protesters and the violence that always erupts over this event.

But I do believe they have a right to assemble peacefully and state their opinions.

Having witnessed it myself, it WASN'T peacefully by any stretch.  They were creating a disturbance, hindering access to the event AND blocking roadways.

Offering a handshake from the GLBT side to the fundie protesters drives them batshit crazy.  They get on their mics and start spewing bible quotes like Mount Vesuvius spits lava.

The christian faith in this day and age should tolerate gay and also lesbians. And if they want to have a festival i don't really see a problem with that at all, most christians are very hypocrtical of others. Then they have the cheek to moan and criticise what we are doing in public, but behind closed doors they are getting up to the same things, shocking i know but very true.In my opinion the the christian faith needs a 21st century wake up call,as they are not living in the modern world it seems to me.

Bottom line is that if you believe that they should be allowed to disrupt our events, we should have a counter-vailing right to invade their churches, mosques, synagoues, temples, chapels and cathedrals and drown out their rituals by quoting from those writings we believe to be true and valid, through loudspeakers, jostling and abusing everyone who attends the church, carrying abusive placards, etc.

I hope nobody in our world would actually want to take advantage of such "rights". Being dignified, self-controlled, tolerant, reasonable, etc. is not only more indicative of who and what we are, it is actually much more effective, because it makes it obvious to everyone that they are crazy, ignorant bigots.

I don't consider the doctrine or dogma of any religion, faith, ideology, race, cuture or political party is in any way sacred or has any right to preferential treatment over any other. We must expect that our world-view should be respected as theirs - and take what steps we need to do to ensure it is.

I recall an incident during one of the SM Pride marches in London. An outraged lady asked a policeman, "Why are they allowed to do this?" His deadpan reply was a classic; "Because we're a democracy, Ma'am."

We had these people show up at Mardi Gras in New Orleans and all they want to do is pick a fight- they're unbeleivable! Our local holy rollers had become a costume group over the years, they know people will just make jokes and laugh at them dragging huge wooden crosses around so they're actually pretty mellow about it now. No arguements, just an offer of a cocktail or a bowl with a big smile will deflate a fundie pretty quick... The Gras is very calm and people will let the ringleader preach at them through the megaphone thing until it gets old- just more performance art and so frustrating. Nobody gets saved.

Buy these new people! They want to brawl in the street! Hurt people! NOPD at Mardi Gras is not a group to mess with and I think the mean Christians got the message when they were sent to Hell, as Central Lock Up at Carnival is called. They disapeared...

What flat out mean people! I didn't see free speech or a right to protest, I saw flat out harrassment escalating into packs of Fundamentalist crazies physically intimidating people on the streets. I don't recall that in the first Amendment.

When they came here, they invaded a school yard, preventing children from using the field for sports. I did not appreciate having my son's game requiring police protection, nor my taxes going towards the police presence and the garbage pick up after they left. The group they were interrupting had bought insurance to cover those costs. So yes, I'm prejudiced against them because local ordinances require permits and insurance and they did neither.

About the only permit you can't get issued here is for a St. Patrick's Day parade because we simoly don't want to deal with all the drunks, and the drunk drivers.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not assume these people speak for all Christians. This group provokes counter attacks and then sues to get financing for their next protest. I hesitate to say they are not Christian because there is only ONE JUDGE of another's heart. True Christians are obligated to at least try to love everyone, even their enemies. Protesting military funerals and showing up to simply create controversy is what these people do. I have to wonder about the virulence of their anti-gay hatred. Methinks maybe their "leader" doth protest too much.

I don't think I made it clear that I do NOT consider GLBT( sorry if I got the initials wrong) or the bdsm community the enemies of Christians. I don't. If I did this would be a peculiar venue for me to post on, wouldn't it?

I lived in Topeka, KS for three and a half years, and often encountered Fred Phelps and his crew, carrying their signs near the State Capitol Bldg.  Topekans have learned the hard way that the best thing you can do with Fred is ignore him.  He thrives on creating a scene, stirring things up, and making people angry.  (Hey, if they're angry, they're paying attention, right?)

I remain unconvinced that Fred actually believes the nonsense he spews; I think he's painted himself into a corner, and this is the only way the man can make a living these days.  (There are people out there who really do hate what Fred claims to hate, and they are willing to send money to Fred so he can fly around the country and make their views known.)

People like Fred Phelps, in my opinion, should be taken out by sniper fire.  I volunteer to pull the trigger.

There are those who then argue "But Pyrr, that would make you no better than him!"  Maybe not, but good God would it be satisfying.

Actually, it would make you a great deal worse than Fred, who--to the best of My knowledge--has never physically harmed anyO/one.  I completely disagree with Fred's message, but I'm thankful that I live in the United States where people (including Fred and his flock) aren't likely to be killed, just for expressing their views.  (After all, if that were the case, many of U/us would be likely targets for numerous religious fanatics...)

And yes, I'm against the death penalty...

Must have been Obama's church!  I never have liked Christian protests especially if they were against a group like abortion, etc.
Makes no sence whatsoever.
