To make this easier, i've cut and paste the info from the CDC, again, this is only through the year 2002- the numbers are higher now! (The reason for my edits were trying to make the Table easier to read; in terms of the exposure category, there are 3 sets of numbers: Men Women and Total- sorry if it's hard to read)

And while some of you notice that the populations more vunerable to contracting HIV are men who have sex with men and IV drug users, let's not forget that women may have had unprotected sex with a man who falls into one or both categories.
i work with clients now, heterosexual women and men, who NEVER use condoms nor do they tell their partners that they have HIV! (one of my clients is a prostitute). So, despite the numbers, it pays to play it safe. If you don't like using condoms, go get tested, there are now easier and faster ways of getting tested- the Oral swab tests take 15 mins.
Also, syphillis is making a big comeback as well- so it pays to know 1) your partner's sexual history and health 2) use condoms, dental dams (which cover the vagina and/or the anus) and be sure to get tested if you have multiple sex partners!
