No, nikon is still top drawer for lenses, but if you look at the bodies of most of the cameras they are only stamped for the Name Brand -- they are mostly Mitsubishi.

I go brand name for certain things, but as we get older, I buy more stuff that is the best of the best for stuff I often use, because cheap shit falls apart and I am sick of it.

Ron

I do not care what the brand name is.  I want it to last so I will pay extra for quality.

i'm very much focused on brand names, however not because the name is popular or pricey, but based on quality (or lack thereof), and if i am aware of them, ethics of the particular company. like i won't eat at quizno's, and would never buy anything from or manufactured by starbucks, because of the despicable ethics found in those particular businesses. as far as food and other goods, i look for quality, and certain brands are known for high quality. i have a thing where it kills me to buy/use generic or store brand ANYthing. if i have my way about it, i won't eat at all rather than eat meats or seafood from Food Lion or some other store i consider to be low-quality for meats and produce. there have been many times when i have eaten a bowl of cereal for dinner, while everyone else ate a full course meal i had prepared for them, because the particular foods were not of the quality that i prefer. it used to irritate my Master, my "pickiness" as he calls it, but as i don't control the spending in this house, and don't complain if i'm eating cornflakes and everyone else has Giant brand porterhouse steaks, he doesn't really care. He could of course force me to eat anything he wishes, and he has done that in the past, but mostly he just shakes his head and laughs.

My mother used to always go on about how white her washing always was and she would rant how every other brand of washing powder was inferior to the one she used....to this day whenever I purchase a brand thats not that one she used I know I get a twinge of guilt..wondering if my washing isn't coming up to par.

I've also taken on the belief somewhere down the line that you can tell a lot about a person by the watch they wear....so I'm probably brandy in that way too in certain regards.

Well thats my brand name story.

I wont purchase an item that has the brand name in huge letters written all over it.  Those clowns who wear ADIDAS clothing with it in 5 inch tall lettering make me want to go postal on their wardrobe with spray paint.

Just me, probably wrong.

It really does depend to me, on the quality.

For cosmetics (I LOVE cosmetics), I have educated myself on what ingredients mean so that I know I'm actually getting my moneys worth or not. I look less at the brand and more at the list of ingredients... then, the price... if I go into sticker shock though, I look for a close alternative.

For clothes, I have discovered that better quality for some things, such as work clothes that I wear all the time, and usually doesn't change much year to year,  tends to last longer... That said, I still like to search around the sales rack at the end of the season for next year... it's like a lioness on the prowl  It's a sport. Cheaper things are great for "fun" and clothes that will go out of style by next year anyhow.

I just recently coughed up what was SERIOUS money for me on shoes... $100 on ebay (this designers shoes run around $300 though)!!!! Never spent that, I have always felt my shoes wear out equally as fast at $20 or $60 (which, before, was the highest I ever spent).  I did some research about these shoes, David J. Pliner, and read great things about them, especially for us tall ladies who have larger feet... I must admit, I LOVE them, they are comfy, but, time will tell if it was worth the money.

For food, again, it depends. I have certain favorites that I will buy -- Hunts Ketchup (more tomato-ey to me), but in general, I do the bargain hunt thing and read the ingredient lists and stock up on favorites when they go on sale. Also, there is this store called Trader Joes some of you may have heard of... a lot of their name items are actually brand names... example, their butter is actually from Cabbott (New England brand I tend to like a lot for dairy). I really like shopping there for more gourmet items at reasonable prices.

And, yes, reading all those labels, it does take me typically a long time at the store... LOL

I have to say I look for quality and value far more than brand. There are alot of things that I consider disposable like small electronics that I don't even look at the brand. Same with alot of clothing. I am built weird so I just focus on fit and cost. If I become brand loyal it's not because it is a "cool"one but one that has earned my loyalty in some way.

There are brands I have found that I like and look for, Neuman's salad dressing for instance. I had it at a friends party and loved it so now I buy it. Just don't ask me what brand of cottage cheese I buy.

Brand names, gee i don't know....wait...i have it!

HARLEY DAVIDSON!

Well, there is also a quality issue imbedded in that brand name---
You see many fine Harlanski's still on the pave that are older than our parents, after some of the roughest treatment known to man. 30-s and 40's and on up are common.  And don't whine they leak, goddammit!!!! adjust your fuckin' chain oiler.
(goddamn kids!!!!)

You do not see a dearth of yammiehoppers on the road from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and even 90s.

I just thought this one needed repeating!

Except for chocolate, Godiva has the name and the quality.

You know Master (Scooter) brought up a good point this morning; subs/slaves do have to pay a bit more attention to brand names.

We have to learn the names our owners like best.

It took me awhile to learn the brands they preferred for a lot of things. Some things i got them to try the brand i preferred like Yukon Gold potatoes which they now prefer.

I grew up poor, so moms thriftiness rubbed off on me. I can and freeze veggies and fruit from my garden. I hunt and use every usuable part of the meat and hide I can...and yes I tan the hides and make things from them. (Nothing says love more than a deerskin flogger.;) ) So when it comes to shopping I don't usually go after name brands, I go for the bargain. I still use coupons and do mail in rebates. IF I can find a name brand item selling for less than its generic counterpart I will buy it but it isn't an issue for me to have that named brand. I shop at payless for shoes and can make my own clothes if I have the time. Heck I even shop thrift stores/fleamarkets/estate and yard sales whenever I can. You can get named brands there for a fraction of the price.

On a related note, I wear the type of boot, but I got them at Costco.

Nothing beats a pair of Ugg boots after a hard workout.

UGGs are just awsome! I got mine off ebay for about $30. They kind of make me look forward to winter.

Hmm ... I think the hubby is more girly than me when it comes to brand names of clothing and things of that nature.  I tend to not worry as much ... although I do own a $125 pair of jeans embedded with swartsky crystals ... as they were gorgeous and a gift from my grandpa.  But other than that I love to wear my plain t-shirts and a pair of cheap jeans ... the look my hubby deams as *frumpy*.  He now buys my clothes and decides what I wear so that I am up to his standard.  He's also more concerned about products like body wash, hair gel, etc.  I sometimes swear that I am the hubby and he is the wife, hehe.

It depends what I am buying.  If it is food, I could care less if it is a brand or not.  Computers, most definitely.  Home electronics, definitely.  Same with clothing.  I guess I even do the same with cars.  Cadillac and Nissan.

Interesting post, I've loved reading the thread.

I'm fiercely brand loyal for products that I know from experience, but I will occasionally try a new product to see if there might be any technological or scientific improvements that I've missed.

I only buy a specific Laundry soap, I only buy my favorite brand shampoo, I order my personal toiletries from a company in France whose products I know and trust, I buy from one of only two given TV manufacturers, kitchenware is selected by brand names (but only those that have been tested by America's Test Kitchen because they always publish the best performing product on the market and it's not always the most expensive, either!), etc etc etc.

I've learned what types of products I can economize on, and which ones truly fit the 'pennywise, but pound foolish' adage.

TM

It depends on the brand for me.  I was raised to always try the generic stuff out because it's cheaper and that's good, but some things brand names really are better than the generic stuff.  So if it's something I really want, I stick with the brand.

I also shop for the more expensive "brand name" stuff when it comes to rare or pampering things- I will try out the day spas for my hair cuts before I try out the local cuttery place.

So I'd say in my life it's currently about 60% generic stuff and 40% brand name when it comes to consumables.
