I wholeheartedly concur with you there, you any idea how easy it is to be diagnosed with a whole lot of mental 'disorders'? Most of the Goth kids in the UK INSIST on being diagnosed with 'depression' cos its cool! It's such a shame cos it makes it so much harder to identify severe problems in their early stages of development.

Katy, please do not think i am encouraging anyone to stop taking their meds, that was not the point of this post

Oh, no problem.  I was just reminding people that mood disorders are serious, and that when people go off their meds there can be detrimental effects.

NightWindWhisper -> RE: keep the pills away!!! (2/13/2007 8:41:44 PM)

I think that the best anti-depressant is aerobic exercise, within the proper target heart range for your age (worked up to as required by your present condition) of a duration that is sufficient to produce an endorphin release.  This amout of time for most people is about 35-50 minutes.  One must add seven minutes in the begining to warm up to the target heart range, and a seven minute cool-down period.  Therefore the aerobic workout is usually 50 to 65 minutes.-

A person can easily tell when they have reached the endorphin release level (and I'm simplifying this as there can be other neurotransmitter effects).  The point is at that point when the brain moves from "oh man, when is this going to end," to an abrupt change accompanied by "I could do this forever..."  At that point the effect in place and you can stop unless you want to do more exercise for weight loss.  The effects can last for many hours, or even a day depending on the person.

Indeed, this may not be sufficient for certain disorders such as bipolar, but for moderate depression, often, this done with diligence can turn a person's life around.

Meds do work, though finding the right one is really a sort of shotgun approach, and often the adverse effects terminate the use.  It's a matter of what works for "you."

For panic/anxiety I recommend the excellent book: The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook.  It can be had usually on half.com and has many useful tacticts which really work to reduce anxiety/panic.

i have a collection of meds that no longer work, in and of themselves. of course, i was told by professionals that it's not wise for me to build up a surplus of meds, given my past history of suicide by OD. i call it an insurance plan...just in case things REALLY get bad.

I've an emergency kit too. My friends & my doctor are aware of it, my friends also know where it is located. It isn't something I ever plan to use but the comfort of knowing it is there is great when I get trapped in a pain loop. It's kinda like having a touch stone I can rub except this is a mental rubbing.

wewantaslave -> RE: keep the pills away!!! (2/14/2007 4:39:13 PM)

I can say, most people with bipolar have huge issues with taking meds.  Thats one of the issues of bipolar. Meds should be taken so you can make rational decisions with other issues.

No one enjoys taking medication for anything ever, unless its their fettish. :)  That being said, when starting meds, stay on them so you can give them a chance to work.  When you feel better, stay on them so you can continue to stay better.  Lots of bipolar people feel better and irrationally think they are cured or can then control themselves. When in reality, they start the spiral all over again and the down from that gets real bad!

I know a few people with bipolar and even lived next to one at one time. Long term observation has proven that if you dont take meds, your going no where but to jail or the mental hospital. Meds are the key to freedom.

Its good that this person is researching and trying to understand whats happening.  Thats a good baby step.

Keep up the good work!

I know LOTS of people with 'bi-polar' in truth i've known about bi-polar since as far back as i could remember, i guess its like several forms of emotions and actions that are soon to be labelled as psychological disorders like courage, pride, mourning, hatred, atrophy. When i feel happy i am ecstatic, when i feel the force of energy i feel in-fucking-vincible and i KNOW i am, when something bad happens i hate life so much i wanna die, when i watch a tv show and see someone innocent get beat up i wanna kill badly!.... So am i bi-polar or an extreme personality?

Wolf1020 -> RE: keep the pills away!!! (2/15/2007 9:34:24 AM)

I personally hate taking pills.  Do I when I need to?  Yes, I have joint problems and it is either take the pills or be walking around like a damned cripple and be lucky to finish out the day.  Those are my bad days and yep I take the pills, on my good and tolerable days I keep the meds put away and don't touch them.  Same goes for headaches and what not, I would rather take the pill and be able to function.  It goes to tolerance and level of what you are taking the pill for for me personally.

About the only thing I take on a daily basis are vitamins

this is a favorite feeling of mine

blackwinterbyrd -> RE: keep the pills away!!! (2/15/2007 12:45:56 PM)

er.  yes the drug industry is profit-driven, they make mistakes and giant fuckups and people die.  such is medicine.   the drugs they come up with are in fact from nature, nobody makes up a compound like composing music.  If it isn't natural, it doesn't exist.  The best thing about pharmaceuticals vs herbal remedies is that big pharma will make sure you get a consistent dose every time.  St john's wort capsules are gonna vary wildly in what is in them chemically and how much.  The flaws of the pharma industry are the same flaws of the naturopath industry.  pharma, however has better quality control overall.
Immunizations are prevention.  communicable disease cannot be avoided by "clean living."  The reason some people feel vaccines are unneccesary is beacuse they've done such a fantastic job of eliminating human suffering since the 50's.  without the actual disease, the cost of those side effects seems very high.  of course they have side effects.  Nobody is claiming theat they don't. When the rates are high enough, steps are taken to change the adjuvants and reduce toxicity.    But the rates are low and the cost benefit analysis is clear to anyone who has seen the disease itself.  hell, smallpox vaccine had a 1% mortality rate!  thats obscene!  but we'd still use it because smallpox itself has a 90% fatality rate.
I take my meds.  what side effects do they have that are worse than the illness?  Modern medicine is not the devil.  Naturopathy is not the devil.  they are both practised by humans and often for profit and therefore subject to failings. They both have mistakes, quackery and substance abuse.

mixielicous -> RE: keep the pills away!!! (2/15/2007 12:51:44 PM)

did you know unless you ask otherwise, they are going to give you a vaccine with mercury in it?

dont get me started on the prenatal meds.

i am a bit of a conspirator i guess you could say. aids from a monkey? try released by the US for obviously frightening reasons, but again, another conspiracy.

duck duck goose.

beltainefaerie -> RE: keep the pills away!!! (2/15/2007 2:00:38 PM)

I hated my meds too after a while.  I dropped them when I knew I was in love and still couldn't feel happy.  As soon as I was off the meds, my emotions came back.  While they were necessary to get over my depression, I'm glad not to take them anymore.

blackwinterbyrd -> RE: keep the pills away!!! (2/15/2007 3:10:38 PM)

theres lead in my water too...
I eat plenty of cheap sushi, thats where I get my mercury.  I actually am not an expert on childhood vaccines, but as far as I've heard, they took the mercury out a while ago.   Back in the 50's they used to let schoolchildren chase mercury around the classroom.  I won't say it can't harm you, but you know about it, you know its there and you can ask for it not to be.  You may not know about whats in your food.
yeah, aids from a monkey.  simian IV.  theres also a horse version, a bird version, a reptile version and a cat version.
look, ethical tragedies do occor, Tuskegee happened, and people do experiment on people.  Theres bad shit going on right now in foster care centers for chronically ill children.   But HIV is natural, it comes from a big family of similar viruses, and it came from Africa, just like we did.
There are real conspiracies:  the neo con distaste for welfare; instead of legislating every man for himself, lets run up the deficit so we can't afford to feed and educate anyone who can't feed and educate themselves.  Its called "starving the beast" the beast being federal government and social programs.  edison vs. tesla edison 1, tesla 0.  we have ac current mostly because you can measure and charge for it. DC is better in some ways.  there is conspiracy to keep us dependent on oil, conspiracy to pass aspartame through the FDA, a homosexual social and political agenda, a feminist one, and a religious totalitarianism one.  YES novartis wants to sell you drugs.  But so does Boiron labratories.
