BRNaughtyAngel -> Post Hysterectomy Orgasms (2/15/2007 7:18:17 PM)

I'm going in for a hysterectomy on Tuesday due to large fibroid tumors.  My uterus has flipped over backwards and to the side and is pulling my bladder out of place and pressing on my colon.  Unless they find something unexpected, my ovaries will be staying.

I am curious, for those who have had a hysterectomy, if your orgasms were different afterwards?  I've read that they feel different because there are obviously no uterine contractions, but I'd like to hear from those who've gone through this procedure.  Also, was sex better or worse afterwards?

Thanks for any input!

I saw your post come up as I was replying to an email.

Don't have an answer to your question, but wanted to share my concern.
And I hope the operation and all goes well and you are "on top of things" again soon.

Hi,

I had a hysterectomy about five years ago. I also got to keep my ovaries. The orgasms are different and it did take me a little while to get used to the difference but for me it was a very small thing to deal with because before hand orgasming was almost always painful. Post op, I mean within a matter of weeks, I was like a new woman. My sex drive returned with a vengance and hasn't slowed since.

I am sure it is different for each woman based on pain levels before hand, reason for surgery etc. I can only speak for myself but my quality of life post op is so much better than it was before that I have never once regretted the decision... even though I fought it for a few years before hand. lol

Good luck to you.

Cali

I found my orgasms altered after my hysterectomy. As you climax your cervix moves and obviously this wont happen if it is removed. However, you should find that vaginal contractions remain the same and because everything that was "going wrong" has been taken away things are much more fun! [;)] You may find that you don't get as wet after your hysterectomy as there may be a reduction in the glands (this happened to a friend of mine). Don't worry about this as you can get round it with lube like my friend does. The only thing I'd warn you about is keeping an eye on how you feel in yourself afterwards. Even though my ovaries were left when I had my operation, they died early and I've had to go on to HRT (wonderful stuff!).  Other than being of HUGE benefit to your health, the other plus is that what goes in come out faster than it used to! So you'll find that things seem "extra messy" after sex, but that you are cleaner & neater after the initial rush is over. Good luck with your operation. Mine was the best thing to happen to me, I know you'll feel much better afterwards. If you are ever not sure about something or just want to talk it over, please contact me directly and I'll be glad to  help if I can.

Thank you so much for the personal insights ladies.  I'm trying not to let my anxieties over this get the best of me, so I thought maybe some firsthand experiences might help.

I really do appreciate hearing from y'all.

onestandingstill -> RE: Post Hysterectomy Orgasms (2/16/2007 9:18:36 AM)

I had a hysterectomy last April (HORRAY!!!) due to adenomyosis where the lining instead of coming off the walls of my womb were embedding.
I was bleeding heavy for over a year before they'd do the surgery.
I also kept my ovaries.
I've found my orgasms are about the same, but I can feel the internal scar where my cervix was removed when I'm having intercourse. I am also not wet the same as before. Before the surgery I stayed pretty wet the same amount all the way through having intercourse, Now I'm extremely wet when I cum, but dry up like the desert 5 minutes later and need a little lube till I gush and drip again. My scent changed a little also.
Other than that I had a couple of cysts on my left ovary as my ovary was not happy it was not attached to my womb even though I'd had my tubes tied 20 years ago.
My Doctor said about 1/2 of the people who keep their ovaries need to have them removed in the first year after the surgery.
So far I'm doing good and am not thinking I'll lose my ovaries too.
I had mine done laproscopically, if they are doing yours related to cancer it can't be done this way, but based on what you say maybe they could do yours that way too.
It made my pain minimal from day one, I left the hospital the same day with no pain medicine and I returned to work three days after.
I felt tired about a week, but over all it was not half as uncomfortable as I thought it would be.

Good luck to you and I'll send some prayers up for you next Tuesday that everything will go well.
Sincerely,
suzanne

Well....here is my 2 cents.

I had my surgery 4 years ago.  Mine was done for other reasons than the normal problems down there.  I think that is the reason maybe my view is different than the others.

I found no difference at all.  After the healing was done my sexual activity was no different than before the surgery.

Good luck and all the best, make sure you let us know.

And don't worry about how you feel afterwards.  Myself I had mine done on thursday and was back to work on Monday..but I am a sucker for punishment...lol...was doing laundry friday night.  But most people take at least 3 weeks before they do anything...some even longer

BRNaughtyAngel -> RE: Post Hysterectomy Orgasms (2/16/2007 9:53:09 AM)

Thanks one and hot for more experiences.

Mine can't be done lapriscopically because of the size of my uterus (the fibroids make it the size of a 4 month pregnancy) and apparently the fact that I've never had a baby plays into that as well.

I forgot to add that they will also be doing a procedure to reposition my bladder with a pig skin mesh sling (that will "dissolve" over about a year).  Because my uterus has pulled my bladder, it has weakened the ligaments that hold it in place, so that will be fixed too.  Truth is, other than leaking urine when I sneeze sometimes, I wouldn't even know that I had this problem.  I guess because it happens slowly over time, so you don't notice changes.

My biggest fear was that it would negatively impact me sexually, but the doc reassures me that it won't, and it's good to hear that others have had positive experiences.

I'll be in the hospital for a couple of days, no driving for 12 days and no penetrative sex for 6 weeks. [>:]  I guess that means I could still have a clitoral orgasm after a couple of weeks, but then I'd be scared I'd tear something!  Yikes!

nyrisa -> RE: Post Hysterectomy Orgasms (2/16/2007 10:44:58 AM)

I had a hysterectomy about 10 years ago......and have celebrated ever since. *smiles* Would do it over again in a heartbeat, because life was so much better. I was anxious, afraid it would diminish my orgasms, but they were no different. I still feel powerful clenching and contractions, and it feels pretty darned good.

Siona -> RE: Post Hysterectomy Orgasms (2/16/2007 11:44:34 AM)

I had a total hysterectomy (meaning I had them take the ovaries too, I've been working in the operating room 16 years..I've seen  women come back1-5 yrs later to have the ovaries removed after a hysterectomy..they were only getting one shot at me) almost 14 yrs ago.
I've noticed no difference in the orgasms at all other than mentioned above...drying up a tad after orgasm ...and the wetness of the orgasm..but the intensity is the same.
This is the best thing I've ever done for myself and wish I'd had it done sooner.
My sex drive increased as well.

calicowgirl -> RE: Post Hysterectomy Orgasms (2/16/2007 11:59:43 AM)

I had to have the bladder sling too so couldn't have intercourse for 6 weeks and no heavy lifting for 12 I think it was. I believe that was more uncomfortable than the hyster part mainly because I had a few days of bladder spasms, but overall... it was not a horrible experience by any means.

Good Luck to you.

Cali

SweetBobbie -> RE: Post Hysterectomy Orgasms (2/16/2007 7:06:22 PM)

Well i have never had a hysterectomy being male but i have performed a few hundred of them (at least).  i am glad to see the personal stories of the L/ladies above verifies my own professional experience in that about 5% of women have some problems with intercourse after hysterectomy but the majority of those resolve what time (within one year).  I have never heard of any complaints about the quality of orgasms after hysterectomy and when the ovaries are left have many patients note an increase in enjoyment of sex as the gynecologic problems causing the hysterectomy were resolved.

MsOpal -> RE: Post Hysterectomy Orgasms (2/16/2007 7:26:25 PM)

I had a total hysterectomy in April of 2003 due to cancer.  I did not have any other treatment, so no chemo or drugs, but it was abdominal because they wanted to be able to poke arojnd to be sure nothing else was going on.  I had already had some HRT treatment, and while others swear by it, I would try and talk anyone out of it because it made me feel worse that I was without it!

Post hyster it did take me a while to mend - open abdomen healing, and diabetic.  But within, I am trying to remember, I think it may ahve been about 3 months before we had full blown sex again, it was all good.  It took a few times for the orgasms to really take off, but I think I may have been holding back some and not relaxing. Things have been great since then.  While there are no uterine contractions, I still ahve powerful abdominal contractions from foreplay and intercourse both.  I had been concerned because I have always been able to climax from nipple stimulation, quite hard, and I know that is a physical nipple-uterine connection.  But "muscle memory" or something ...  it wasn't long before I was indeed having nipple stimulated orgasms as well.  Moisture is a problem at times, but not often, and I am over 50 so it may have become a problem by now no matter what!  We  keep lube by the bed... for whatever the interests are!

I highly recommend a website called Hyster Sisters.  It was a blessing for me and my daughter (also had a hysterectomy in her eqrly 30's).  You will find wopmen who have it done for every reason there is, medical staff, open honest answers to so many concerns.

I wish you the best, don't try to get back to life too soon, this is a time for you to take good care of yourself.  Let friends and family pamper you and relax.
Be Well,
MsOpal

Thank you Bobbie and ladies for sharing.  Your posts have helped alleviate some of my fears and I really appreciate your taking the time to respond. [sm=smile.gif]

HouseofBear -> RE: Post Hysterectomy Orgasms (2/20/2007 8:20:37 PM)

I has a hysterectomy about 10 years ago.  My partner calls me a "sports model" grinz.  The orgasms are just as good, and I do not have to worry about periods anymore, which were very heavy.  I had HRT for a time as my ovaries went into surgical shock, however after a few months they were back in full swing.  I have not had a problem with dryness, either.  I have known people who have and what they use is a combination of a lube such as astroglide and mix it with a feminine vaginal moisturizer (they say the lube lasts much longer that way).

dakotabo -> RE: Post Hysterectomy Orgasms (2/20/2007 10:58:21 PM)

Hi, I had a hysterctomy five plus years ago, best thing I ever did in my entire life, besides having the cornkids of course. For me persoanlly sex was sooooo much better after. I took a long time to heal, but I am overweight, I was afraid to have sex again, but I was for the first time in my life having incredible wet dreams! Sex drive had done a triple on me. For me the orgasms were also better, I have had no problems with drying out, that is something that didn't change. All in all I am sure you will end up being very glad that you had the surgery... I will be thinking of you.

onestandingstill -> RE: Post Hysterectomy Orgasms (2/22/2007 11:03:50 AM)

So Ms Naughty Angel how did your surgery go??

BRNaughtyAngel -> RE: Post Hysterectomy Orgasms (2/23/2007 8:20:38 PM)

Hi Suzanne, thank you for asking.  I had an allergic reaction to the pain meds in the pain pump, so I was itching from head to toe.  By the time they figured that out, it was time to switch to oral meds, so I stayed on benadryl for a couple of days.

I also had to stay an extra day because they wanted me to pass gas.  [8|]  Apparently the burping kind was not sufficient.  [;)]  [:D]

I came home today and other than dealing with post surgical bloating and pain, I suppose I'm doing okay.  I'm just taking it a day at a time.

Not to mention trying to catch up on reading the message boards.  Whew, everyone has been seriously chatty.

Thank you for remembering!

hot1 -> RE: Post Hysterectomy Orgasms (2/23/2007 9:29:31 PM)
