http://www.latimes.com/features/health/la-he-evpsych12feb12,0,1620329,full.story?coll=la-home-health I found this recently as it was just printed in the LA Times a few days ago, it wasn't hard to re-locate. As the topic is also currently active here I thought some of you might be interested in reading the article which looks at depression and the past believed reasons and causes for it, the current mind sets and what this area of mind exploration is showing people. Depression doesn't "just happen" - It has causes, there are reasons and things behind it, and there are motivators driving that feeling of angst. Sometimes they are known and speaking of them seems assinine or would not be well recieved, sometimes the person suffering doesn't have the strength or will to speak on the matter, but there is always a reason for it - Depression isn't a "disease" it IS a state of DIS-EASE and it is fully 100% treatable, and preventable ... It is also - a survival mechanism rooted in dominance ... and submission ... and your place in social heirarchy; and comfort level in that place ... Please do read the article and do what YOU need to do for your own happiness. Don't worry about keeping others happy, becuase they will smile when YOU smile - Worry about your own happiness, your own position and lot in life, and your own tomorrow - and if you don't LIKE what you see - get out there and make some changes!! Pain is only a part of life - not the whole of it, please allow yourself to find your smile - Of all the people out there who DO understand this ... I can honestly say it is NOT a "disease" it does NOT need to be "medicated" - and people DO need to start being far more honest with each other, with themselves and with their emotions. Don't protect them - and sacrifice yourself ... for one they won't appreciate the sacrifice, for two there is no honour in this and for three - you deserve better. So demand better, demand it of yourself first, and remember the road is never smooth, and even if it is paved it has potholes. Signed; A lifelong friend and intimate bedmate of depression. Suicide attempts: 14 Institutionalized for depression: over 6 mos I know - I understand and ... it can be helped and stopped ;maybe not 100%, but hell 98% is quite liveable, and even normal!! Don't take their drugs - MAKE YOUR CHANGES! And ... your friend, who is always here to listen, talk, and be of support - feel free to drop a line as required and desired. XxoxX
