Well, I've only played a little with needle play, but, I was a medic in the army and was a pretty good 'stick' for drawing blood and giving injections. So, for what it is worth, some general advice and info (and sorry if you know any or all of this, just putting it out there).
1. Since it is blood play, use gloves.
2. You should also have some sort of 'sharps' container for your used needles. Don't just throw them in the trash.
3. Make sure you clean and disinfect the area to be pierced. Alcohol wipes, povidone/iodine swabs will work.
4. What areas are you going to be piercing, and what type of piercing? Are we talking some of the more sensitive bits or just skin (like, on the back or buttocks, etc). Will it be a straight in poke or a 'through and through' where the needle pierces the skin, runs under, and then comes back out? This will determine what length of needle you will need. If you want to just 'poke', get short little needles. For through-and-through, you'll need longer needles. I would say probably 1.5" at least, 2" might be easier.
5. The bigger the number of needle 'guage' the smaller the needle. So, a 18 gauge needle is much wider than a 25 gauge.
6. Probably something like a 22-25 gauge needle might be good to start with - http://www.cottonballs.com/servlet/shop?cmd=I&id=BD305156 - but this is really a matter of personal preference. I would say start smaller and then work up to the heavy gauges.
7. DO NOT recap the needles after using them. This is the #1 source of accidental sticks. Remove the needle from the sub and immediately place it in the sharps container.
