I got on the pill (Ortho something) when I was 14 to regulate my periods, and I just kept taking it on through highschool and after thinking I was protected. I took them like clockwork, never missed a day (if I did for some reason Id go the month or so without sex or use condoms)..and I took them at the same time every day. I got pregnant when I was 19. I told my OBGYN and she says "oh yea, if you take the same form of oral contraceptive for 4 or 5 years, it can become ineffective" oh I was mad...wondered why the hell she hadnt told me that BEFORE I got pregnant. During those 5 years the pill had caused some minor weight gain but no other major issues..well..except the unexpected pregnancy! And I was young enough and active enough in highschool that I was able to get rid of the extra weight gain without too much problems. I dropped the pregnancy weight of 75 extra pounds in 3 months too...arrrghhh I wish I had that same metabolism now! After that pregnancy I tried the depo shot (not real happy with the pill at the time, gee I wonder why). I bled for 6 months straight. It was miserable. I had maybe three or 4 days a month where I wasnt bleeding at all, the cramps were miserable, the weight gain was crazy, and the mood swings that I usually have with a period got worse and worse. After the shot I took a break for a year, then tried the pill once more, a different kind some low hormone dose type, but even that made me bleed like crazy and have massive cramps. So I got off and went without birthcontrol for about 7 years. Went through a 2 year marraige, 4 semi serious relationships and a ton of casual ones with no BC, condoms if anything at all. Never got pregnant. Im shocked now honestly, but when Im not on any form of BC I only had about 3 cycles a year and the dr's swore Id never get pregnant without some sort of intervention. Apparently they were mistaken because About two years after I met my current husband, I wound up pregnant. I was 6 months pregnant before anyone knew though, I never had a period anyway so it wasnt odd that I wasnt having one each month, I hadnt gained any weight, wasnt showing, and regular over the counter pregnancy tests kept coming up negative whenever I took them. (Id been taking them every two months or so since I was trying to get pregnant and didnt have the period to mark when I might be)...finally my husband rushed me to the ER when I passed out and hit my head on a table one day(Id been passing out rather regulary and no one could find out why)..so the ER doc decided on a whim to run a blood test and check for pregnancy and damn if I wasnt. Did a sonogram, one of the vaginal ones thinking there was no way I could be far enough along to see much on a regular one and WOW, theres this huge baby in there. Shocked us all, cause yea Im 10 or 15 pounds overweight, but not ALOT, and the docs said usually only larger women get away with not noticing a baby growing in there to that size. After I had that baby I didnt worry about going back on BC yet, hadnt worried about it in years and didnt even think it would be a problem...damn if I wasnt flipping pregnant again before I ever got another period...and Id been breastfeeding too! 6 weeks after the birth of the last one I got the Mirena IUD implanted. Its the plastic hormone based IUD. I bled for the first 3 months straight, its caused a small amount of weight gain, my mood swings are pretty bad..but then they were pretty bad even when I wasnt on BC, I think the only difference is my cramps are alot worse. Ive been on it about a year and a half, the bleeding has slowed down to about 1-2 days a month...every 3 or 4 months Ill have a longer period, but sometimes I barely even bleed for a day and dont need more than a panty liner. I like not having a period as much, but I wish the mood swings would go away with the bleeding. I think next time Im goign to look into the paraguard, thats the copper IUD. It supposedly works just as well, but doesnt have the hormone issues that the Mirena does. Im hoping that will help with the mood swings some. It hurt when it got inserted, but they had told me to expect a contraction like labor pains but it was no where near that bad, more like a major menstrual cramp. The only annoying thing about it is the strings. Some guys have told me they can feel it during sex and its a bit uncomfortable to them, and Im always scared someone is going to get their fingers tanglled up in it while fisting or just regular playing and accidentaly yank it out. Ive been told the strings on the paraguard are much softer and not as uncomfortable to the guys.
