Okay, I haven't read everything on this thread, but I have to say that I use the NuvaRing and I adore it.
And the best part? I use it continuously (new one every three weeks, no off week) so I NEVER get a period.
It's so freaking awesome. I know some people might be concerned about the hormone levels, but since my gyno does the exact same thing herself, I'm going to trust her on this.
Even though my last partner was rather well endowed, he could not feel it inside me during regular sex, though you can definitely feel it with a finger.
The other awesome advantage is that it will not be affected by antibiotics. I had a long talk with my pharmacist about this, and the reason regular birth control pills taken orally are affected is that they destroy some of the bacteria in your stomach that makes the birth control work. Not so with the ring. It also tends to work for women who cannot take the oral pill because of nausea.

i personally have Mirena. It's amazing! It's an IUD. It's a bit on the pricey side, but it lasts for FIVE years. i'm sure some people here have already mentioned it, but i figured i'd add in my $0.02 as well. It does hurt like a bitch to have it put in, especially if you've never had kids. There's some irregularity at first, but if you're patient and push through that part, generally after about 6 months, you stop having periods.

Imagine that...4 and a half years without miserable weeks of crampage and bloating and overall ickiness. YAY! And it's probably the most dependable of all the methods. No forgetting the pill, no sticky patches or shots, no problems with antibiotics. i definitely recommend it.

I got on the pill (Ortho something) when I was 14 to regulate my periods, and I just kept taking it on through highschool and after thinking I was protected. I took them like clockwork, never missed a day (if I did for some reason Id go the month or so without sex or use condoms)..and I took them at the same time every day. I got pregnant when I was 19. I told my OBGYN and she says "oh yea, if you take the same form of oral contraceptive for 4 or 5 years, it can become ineffective" oh I was mad...wondered why the hell she hadnt told me that BEFORE I got pregnant. During those 5 years the pill had caused some minor weight gain but no other major issues..well..except the unexpected pregnancy! And I was young enough and active enough in highschool that I was able to get rid of the extra weight gain without too much problems. I dropped the pregnancy weight of 75 extra pounds in 3 months too...arrrghhh I wish I had that same metabolism now!

After that pregnancy I tried the depo shot (not real happy with the pill at the time, gee I wonder why). I bled for 6 months straight. It was miserable. I had maybe three or 4 days a month where I wasnt bleeding at all, the cramps were miserable, the weight gain was crazy, and the mood swings that I usually have with a period got worse and worse. After the shot I took a break for a year, then tried the pill  once more, a different kind some low hormone dose type, but even that made me bleed like crazy and have massive cramps. So I got off and went without birthcontrol for about 7 years. Went through a 2 year marraige, 4 semi serious relationships and a ton of casual ones with no BC, condoms if anything at all. Never got pregnant. Im shocked now honestly, but when Im not on any form of BC I only had about 3 cycles a year and the dr's swore Id never get pregnant without some sort of intervention. Apparently they were mistaken because About two years after I met my current husband, I wound up pregnant. I was 6 months pregnant before anyone knew though, I never had a period anyway so it wasnt odd that I wasnt having one each month, I hadnt gained any weight, wasnt showing, and regular over the counter pregnancy tests kept coming up negative whenever I took them. (Id been taking them every two months or so since I was trying to get pregnant and didnt have the period to mark when I might be)...finally my husband rushed me to the ER when I passed out and hit my head on a table one day(Id been passing out rather regulary and no one could find out why)..so the ER doc decided on a whim to run a blood test and check for pregnancy and damn if I wasnt. Did a sonogram, one of the vaginal ones thinking there was no way I could be far enough along to see much on a regular one and WOW, theres this huge baby in there. Shocked us all, cause yea Im 10 or 15 pounds overweight, but not ALOT, and the docs said usually only larger women get away with not noticing a baby growing in there to that size. After I had that baby I didnt worry about going back on BC yet, hadnt worried about it in years and didnt even think it would be a problem...damn if I wasnt flipping pregnant again before I ever got another period...and Id been breastfeeding too! 6 weeks after the birth of the last one I got the Mirena IUD implanted. Its the plastic hormone based IUD. I bled for the first 3 months straight, its caused a small amount of weight gain, my mood swings are pretty bad..but then they were pretty bad even when I wasnt on BC, I think the only difference is my cramps are alot worse. Ive been on it about a year and a half, the bleeding has slowed down to about 1-2 days a month...every 3 or 4 months Ill have a longer period, but sometimes I barely even bleed for a day and dont need more than a panty liner. I like not having a period as much, but I wish the mood swings would go away with the bleeding.  I think next time Im goign to look into the paraguard, thats the copper IUD. It supposedly works just as well, but doesnt have the hormone issues that the Mirena does. Im hoping that will help with the mood swings some. It hurt when it got inserted, but they had told me to expect a contraction like labor pains but it was no where near that bad, more like a major menstrual cramp. The only annoying thing about it is the strings. Some guys have told me they can feel it during sex and its a bit uncomfortable to them, and Im always scared someone is going to get their fingers tanglled up in it while fisting or just regular playing and accidentaly yank it out. Ive been told the strings on the paraguard are much softer and not as uncomfortable to the guys.

defiant that is not strictly true about Mirena, I have it in also and after the initial bleed I only had a period every 3 to 4 months but then after about 18 months of having it in I had a crazy messed up time of getting them constantly for 6 weeks and have now settled into a semi regular pattern.

I also get mad crazy hormaonal mood swings and pms symptoms that I have never before experienced. But sadly for me at least, this is the pick of a bad bunch before the next port of call, permenant measures.

So to the OP I think all forms of birth control can have thier down sides it is just a case of trial and error till you find the best for you (although I realise this is an old thread so you may have solved this problem

My local clinic refuses to do IUD's with anyone that hasn't had kids or is under 23 (or could 25). Argh. No kids for me so I got my man fixed. ;)

I've got a Mirena IUD.  I love it.  It's actually a little bit more effective than surgical sterilization.  It lasts 5 years and can be inserted or removed with a regular gyno office visit.  One nice side effect is that my periods are much lighter and shorter than when I was on the Pill.  They are expensive, though, and chances are your doc will have to get preapproval from your insurance company.  However, getting approval isn't that hard and doesn't take long.  It's well worth it.

I have had an IUD before I had my first child. Aside from stronger cramping during the first 3 periods after insertion, and stronger bleeding during use, I had no problem with mine.
A expirienced doc should have no problem inserting an IUD, even if the woman has never given birth. In that cases it is normally inserted during your period and the insertion might hurt a bit.
But after it is placed, you do not need to worry about it, other then the controls and the change when it is expired.
I used an IUD without hormones, btw.

All in all, I would go this way again.

Agreed. I had my IUD put in about 9 months ago. I've never had kids. I bled randomly for quite a few months, and my periods have gone back to being excruiatingly painful, but no more painful than puberty, thank god. (Good ol' vitamin C!) They install them free in the UK, so I'm not sure how much they cost in the US. If you forget to take pills or don't like the hormonal effects of the pill, and want the freedom to have sex with your STD-free monogomous partner any time you want, the IUD totally rocks. I'm constantly afraid he'll pull it out or move it while inserting different things, but so far no problems. Just remember, the IUD doesn't protect against STDs, just children.

I use Depo Provera shots. One every 3 months, and if I should decide I want kids, I just have to go off for 6 months and plan.

The BEST birth control is the copper IUD.  Your gyno should be able to put it in.  You want the one without the hormones on it.  Just the plain copper IUD.  Lasts up to (if I remember) 5 years I think :)

I've taken Ortho but had to take lo dose due to nausea. In November I thought I'd try the Depo shot I heard so much about from friends.....it might work with some people, as listed above DiurnalVampire seems to be happy with it. For my system its the worst mistake I've ever made. Moodswings from hell!, water-weight gain in my abdomen, depression, sucidal thoughts, violence that I've had to learn to control, etc. Its like I'm crazy, but worse!
Def, talk with a doctor. If you happen to be one that is unfortunate enough to get almost ever negative side effect to meds pay close attention to possible effects and weight the pros to cons.

Personally I believe in using the pill, foam (which you can find in any store it comes in a small applicator tube) not a huge fan of condoms...unless they glow in the dark and are just to play hide and seek. Or there's always diaphrams. You can't feel it and it works great.

Ive been on 7 differen ttypes of pill.  Femodene being the one that suited me most. However all of them have made me a bit nausuas at times.  I had the Mirena coil about 5 years ago and I have to say I hated it.  I got caught on it and didnt know till I started to miscarry and it caused me a lot of unpleasant stomach ache.
I am booked in on tuesday to get the implant.  I must say I am a bit nervous about weight gain on it but I havnt read anything on forums or other sites where anyone has complained about it so fingers crossed.

i was on the pill, i would forget to take it, gained some weight, even got pregnant on them, but then i was on a sulfa drug for a UTI and the dr didnt tell me that it would override my birthcontrol!! After i had my daughter, i got the Norplant, those five little stick things inplanted in my arm that was to last five yeara. OMFG, that was the worse thing i have ever done. i had a period 3 weeks out of every month, became anemic. No sex drive at all, but then, how can i when i was bleeding so dang much.  Finally found a dr that would take them out after having them for a year and the horrow stories she told me about girls actually having mental issues with the Norplant, one was even put in a mental hospital till they found out what was causing it.  After i had my twins, i got my tubes tied, best thing i did.  But i wouldnt have done that before i had them or if the dr had not assured me that it is reversable if i ever do decide to have more.

best of luck with you

I loved the sponges when they were out before. Totally use when you want to only. I found them easy to insert and remove. Only problem is they have spermicide which then tastes kinda yucky if he wants to lick you or have you lick him after

Sponges are a no-no! My friend was conceived when her mother was using one. Their fail rate is very high!

I would suggest spermacidal film. They do a good job of killing sperm and making sure you stay not-pregnant.

IUD's are excellent! I had one for years, and loved it. They have two forms, the copper t, that contains no hormones at all, and the progesterone one, which does contain hormones, although only slight amounts. I had the copper t twice. It is 99.9% effective against pregnancy, immediately reversible, and effective for up to 10 years. Not to mention it is cost efficient, at somewhere between $200-$400 each (over ten years that is between .05 cents and .12 cents per day!). Available at all planned parenthood locations for the un or underinsured, and all ob/gyn offices.
I personally have tried about 10 different forms of the pill, the patch, the nuva ring (which gave me many yeast infections)... all with side effects. Soon there is to be released a shot (next year supposedly) that men can receive to reduce sperms ability to penetrate. Until then, sorry, there are too few options.

I loved the copper-T IUD.........Even though I used it, I got pregnant with my daughter that just gave me my first grand daughter!!

Since I got pregnant with my son the first time I had sex, with a condom. And then my daughter with the IUD, I decided I was a welfare sob story waiting to happen.

Sooooooooooooooooooooo....................After my daughter was born I had a tubal ligation. I was 18.

I've never regreted it for a moment.

This is actually something Ive looked into a bit, because unfortunately most of the conventional prescription birth controls (pills, patches, shots, the ring...) use hormones to alter your fertility cycle and due to some health issues Ive had I cannot use them.
*most* IUD's do not utilize hormones, however many doctors will not use them in patients under 30 unless they have had at least one child and are in a stable relationship. Reason for this is simple.... the IUD is basically just a small contraption that irritates the lining of your uterus making it impossible for an egg to attach, the presence of this device *can* cause small infections which may not be noticeable at the time, but could potentially cause scar tissue in the uterus creating fertility problems later on.

I use a combination of things... the "calendar method" just calculating your fertility cycle and not having sex (or using condoms) around the time you may be ovulating. There are plenty of over the counter fertility monitors designed to help you GET pregnant, you can also use them to test your calculating. There are also websites with fertility calculators you can use to get a general estimate of when you would be ovulating based on your last period and the duration of your cycle. Not 100% accurate as it can be effected by other things such as stress or diet BUT used in combination with other methods it can decrease the possibilities.

Spermacides are a girls best friend... Foams and creams i found to be too messy, same with the little ovules. The sponge is awesome, it had been taken off the market a few years ago and went back out for distribution a year or two ago... my favorite however is VCF... kind of like the listerine strips but its spermacide... you just fold up the little sheet, put it in, it dissolves with no visible mess and you're good to go for a few hours. (you do have to use a new one each time you have sex to be safe)

I typically keep track of my ovulation cycle and if i know there will be cum anywhere inside i will use one of the little films, and so far ive only gotten pregnant when i wanted to.
