geeky, i'd like to add that i think ciaw is a good basis for many polyamorous relationships (it's definitely something that's basic to ours, anyway), not just serial monogamy.

You're absolutely right Annabelle...my apology for overlooking that.

25 pages of moral philosophy....I am not masochistic enough to read all that

Isn't the fact that cheating is (almost universally) wrong the very reason people do it?  That's why it is fun.  Its adults being naughty. It is rebellious. It is outsmarting your partner, deliberately breaking your word ( "to forsake all others for better or worse") and - if you are good - getting away with it!!

Cheating is not only fun, its a great way to get even with your partner

Women are probably better at this than men.  The media bandies around data that 20 to 30% of children are being raised by men who think they are the father but are not.  Society loves to laugh at cuckolds paying for the cuckoo in the nest.

Is there any more passive aggressive way to hurt your partner than by cheating?

Where would the thrill be if society deemed cheating was No Big Deal?  CIAW and  should stay that way!!!  And when I meet someone who does not cheat on principle (despite ample opportunity), I have found a good person worthy of being trusted and loved*

* I am a reformed cheat myself.

PS my sister wants to add that low self esteem causes infidelity.  Cheating is a quick ego boost.  Look after your woman and she won't need to cheat on you

PPS my sister thinks my photo suggests I must have an ugly head (thats why I left it off?).  Thats not true!!  I just don't want to be recognised walking down the street :)

Sorry to labour the point, but I cannot agree that only the young and idealistic believe CIAW

Cheaters know CIAW.  They do it anyway and live with the guilt (if any).  They weigh up the pros and cons and choose to cheat in full knowlege that it is wrong (unfair, dishonest, endangering their partner's health etc etc).

In some circumstances cheating is the "lesser of two evils" (husband in a coma, no wish to abandon young children etc).  That does not make cheating "right" (or cheats would not hide their cheating!).

CIAW. In a perfect world, no-one would ever be faced with the personal moral dilemma whether to cheat or not.  Knowingly doing something wrong is never good for your soul, no matter how you rationalise it.
