Tell that to India, China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. Those countries built their economies by violation all the conventional wisdom pushed by the IMF and The World Bank. The protected and nurtured some industries and abandoned others through a centrally planned strategy of governement controls and protections which only after they were successful did they begin to remove those early controls

India was an economic basket cast for years until they began abandoning a centrally planned economy. The best and brightest fled the country because of the massive bureaucratic delays and bribes necessary to accomplish anything. Only when the country began embracing free market principles did their economy begin to modernize. Today there is a growing, prosperous, middle class in India and the same is true for the others. South Korea, Taiwan and Japan are economic powerhouses because of the free market. China may have a communist government but they have slowly been loosening the reigns on the economy, allowing more private enterprise, because it is the only way they can keep up with the west. It was the removal of the controls that led to success, not their imposition in the first place.

Again, this is all smoke and mirrors. The real issue is that Bush and Greenspan inflated housing prices and allowed massive barrowing against those inflated prices to fund their economic vacuum cleaner. Now that they have sucked the middle class dry they are going to throw all of us to the mercy of the Chinese where they have their money invested

You’re completely missing my point which is that economic news is rarely all good or all bad. Economics is about trade-offs. What is positive in one sector of the economy may be a negative in another sector and vice versa. The notion that we can have an economy in which everything is going great for everyone all the time is unrealistic. The centrally planned economy is an attempt to create prosperity for all people all the time (in theory, more often than not it is about power) but it is simply impossible for a small group of people at the top to have all the necessary knowledge to provide all the needs and desires of a large populace. Ask yourself this: how much toilette paper will the city of Cleveland need in the year 2008? How many pencils? How many cars? How many eggs, bed sheets, briefcases, picture frames, computers, couches, cans of paint, bags of cat food, television sets, tooth brushes, etc, etc, etc. The notion that a few people can command the necessary activities (acquisition of raw materials, production, transportation) to coordinate the different needs and wants of so many is not only ludicrous, it is arrogant in the extreme.

Okay. I guess I'll take that as a compliment -- in a back handed sort of way. Of course, I've always thought it was everybody else who had problems with rational thought. It is all a matter of perceptions, I suppose. Kind of like what George Carlin said about diving: did you ever notice that everyone going slower than you is an idiot, and every one going faster, is a maniac?
