One thing to note is...if it wasn't for Stephen Douglas, the slave issue would not have been an issue at all, nor become the focus in our current mythical textbooks. The North needed complete opposition to the South, and cotton was king then; the South held a strong economic control of the market then;  to galvanize the opposition, slavery was made a primary issue. Lincoln freed only the slaves in the Northern states, thereby bringing a negro internal turmoil, rebellion, within the Southern power base, disrupting their commerce. Stephen Douglas is the one who should be credited with the freeing of the slaves for his unrelenting lobbying of the Lincoln presidency; it is Douglas who brought about the change in strategity of the war, making slavery the primary focus; 2 years down the road.

Correct me if I am wrong.

And what scandlous affair was Lincoln found to be involved in?

Well lets see

1 - He was critisized by the South (stay out of our business) and the republicans (moved to slowly) over slavery.

2 - He Ridiculed Religion as a child

3 - Spent to much time reading to avoid manual labor (according to neighbors)

4 - Intemperate speech in the House during the Mexican War which caused the Democrats to smear him in his district and continued to haunt him throughout the civil war.

5 - The Democrats called the Civil War a failure which was the fault of Lincoln.

I won't go back too far to bore anyone but for starters how about the Iran contra scandal and then our illegal involvement in south America,oh the pages I could fill but you know what? I am beginning to believe we just replace one crook with another, the elections are a sham..the avg man can't even afford  even to run for dog catcher..AS always just the views of this ol
master..bounty

KenDckey -> RE: How many Republican scandals can you name? (4/4/2007 9:45:21 AM)

Oh yeah BH   I agree.   That is why I went back to beat up on Lincoln who was one of the founders of the Republican Party.   LOL  Show what I think is the sillyness of this type of tthread.   God I am on Vicodin - had a root canal yesterday and this thread is keeing me amused while I am still in pain.    I mean   why pick on Republicans?   Why not pick on Politicians in general - without regard to affiliation?  that would seem to make more sense to me.   LOL   FDR violated the constitution and was loved for it - WPA.  You look at just about any politician and you can find scandal.  Why does it have to just be Republicans?

ToGiveDivine -> RE: How many Republican scandals can you name? (4/4/2007 10:34:31 AM)

What gets me are the people that rail against Bush; yet talk about how Clinton was such an angel.  Billy boy did his backroom deals and his major flops just like Bush 1, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, LBJ, Kennedy, etc.  It's like the  Proctologist's office, one a**hole after another.

Look at the list of candidates that are running for President in 2008 - the whole lot of them scare me and whether it is Guiliani / McCain on one side or Hillary / Obama on the other - those of us in the middle are screwed.

McCain's not right in the head, Hillary is only in this for herself (Hillary would screw herself to get ahead), Obama is showpiece, Guiliani can get good things done if you don't mind tire tracks across your back as he comes through, Edwards has Delusions of Grandeur and Romney ... who the hell is Mitt Romney!?!!?

I'm hoping for Fred Thompson, at least he'll be able to "act" like he knows what he's doing ;-)

Well, the subs won't have much of an issue bending over and taking it in the backdoor, but you Dom/Dommes are going to find the experience quite unpleasant - LOL

I can name one.....not letting the democrats win (the ..or just all) elections

Forrest Gump by another name - if Democrats are the answer to our problems, then the questions must be really stupid.

(Nice thing about this quote is that when someone says we should have only Republicans win all elections, I only have to change one word ;-)

How about Theodore Rosevelts not getting an environmental study done before building the panama canal?

KenDckey:
More on topic would be Rosevelt seperating Panama from Columbia and installing a puppet government that would be responsive to his whims. Smedly Butler USMC being the instrument there of.

I don't know how to break this to you good buddy but Lincoln did not free any slaves.
If you read the emancipation proclomation it frees only those slaves in the states in rebellion, over which Lincoln had not control.  It specifically excluded those slave holding areas that were still in the union.

Of course, Lincoln didnt even bother to free the slaves until 2 years into the war, only in those states in revolt, and only because the Limeys and the Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkeys said they would not send him aid him in the war to subjegate the agrarian south unless he did so.

Ever think about debating without the name calling?

Seems when one stoops to name calling it invalidates even the best of arguments.

I tend to call everybody names.

I refer to my penis as Mr. Tiny.  What can I say?

With the exception of Monkeyboy and the Nitwit patrol, I mean them good naturedly and do not wish to upset people.

Lincoln was faced with a hellish problem, and he dealt with it in the best way he knew how, and I have nothing but the utmost respect for him.

However, I do have issues with people who claim Lincoln "freed" the slaves.  The slaves ended up getting freed, but it was not because the President of the US did so because he woke up one morning and decided slavery was wrong.  There were a whole lot of contributing factors.  The founding fathers of the United States (I think it was Jefferson who wrote to Adams about it) who said that the religious disconnect between the southern states and the northern states would ultimately lead to issues.

I like the British, and I would love the opportunity to go live in Pembrokeshire (Wales) but life has this weird way of trapping people geographically.  I dont really mind the French, although I have never really enjoyed any of the times I spent in Paris.

Yeah that was it, you are right, I just got what mixed up; that's what happens when you get old; your recall, is the second thing to go. But who cares anyhow, the war was never about the slaves, it was about States Rights, and a centralized government in Wash. ruling.  Or, do you have something else to break to me?

Yeah, freeing the southern slaves, caused the rebellion and trouble for the south, he created another army within the south. But Stephen Douglas ...you'll give me that won't you, or am I in for another break.

Good job, Teacher.

ferryman777 -> RE: How many Republican scandals can you name? (4/5/2007 6:58:00 PM)

How about John Ramsey ??? He should be on your list.

SirDiscipliner69 -> RE: How many Republican scandals can you name? (4/11/2007 5:56:11 AM)

I think it is more than scandolous that the current adminsitration can allow genocide to go on with condemning others of improper behaviour

Google Earth maps out Darfur atrocities
If you Google the word Darfur, you will find about 13 million references to the atrocities in the western Darfur region of Sudan -- what the United States has said is this century's first genocide. The new initiative, called "Crisis in Darfur," enables Google Earth users to visualize the details in the region, including the destruction of villages and the location of displaced persons in refugee camps. (Interactive: See how the new technology works)

Seems to pale all other scandlas when there are people dyying because of apathy

It has been going on for four years and now the whimpy UN wants to try an negotiate another 3-4 weeks.

How many more deaths will that bring?

It is estimated only 2500 troops could stop this slaughter.

I Myself would be willing to go.

Guy who originally wrote it 5 years ago is probably in Gitmo.
