And what is normal adolescent angst as well. I can't always tell, neither can her psychiatrist nor her therapist. We just give it time and hope for the best. One thing that hasn't been mentioned but ought to be is how important it is to pay attention to bodily needs.

With the brain chemistry swinging, it is of utmost importance not to nudge into over by getting overtired, by missing meals and having a blood sugar drop turn into a mood swing drop. Unfortunately her body cues don't seem to get her attention until they're critical. By watching ahead of time for when you last ate, or slept, you can help moderate swings caused by these things.

Yeah, paying attention to proper nutrition and exercise can be helpful.

For me, I've also found the Martial Arts to be helpful, although this depends on the specific Art and instructor, as well as her personality, maturity and such. Feel free to PM for recommendations if you'd like any.

Well about the food thing i have never noticed it being attributed to my mood swings mostly because if I am depressed I won't eat and if I am manic I eat like crazy, but I have always liked food so I have always ate so I don't think that caused any problems when I was younger. I have noticed lately that when my blood sugar drops I get a little angry because I don't feel good, and I now know I am insulin resistant so I can agree with that but it never bothered me when I was younger.

Well, I went to the doctor again today and all he did was up my dosage of Lamictal he doesn't want to start me on an anti depressant until my dosage of Lamictal is stable. So, I guess we will see how this goes over the course of this month and I hope my moods stablize.

I have had several friends go on Lamictal and they experienced nausea in the beginning.   There have been several studies on it so far and it is testing very well as a mood stabilizer, nearly as strong as Lithium.  If you can make it through the adjustment period, it's a good med to be on....

 I am bipolar but the only medication I am on is Effexor XR 150mg twice a day and even though that medication is basically for depression it helps me sleep more through the night which helps me feel better in general. Changing my diet has helped me alot as well...more fresh fruits and veggies and my herbals...green tea instead of soda...long walks, candles, incense..they all seem to help me...[:)]

i thought XR was the long acting one and only used once a day

Well, I am doing better as far as I can tell. I wish I could get something for the depression which is probably what we will be doing next month.

It is a long road of trying to find the right combination.  Unfortunately all aspects of medicine aren't an exact science where they know the cure.  i wish you the very best!!

Thank you. I should be okay as long as they find something for the depression. I woke up this morning and thinking about going to work was making me cry...that was weird.

it takes weeks for the effects of the medicine to really take over so it is hard to understand when it either is not doing any good or another medicine is needed.  Keep hanging in there!!

I was using it only once a day but since my late Master passed away I have been having more difficulties so my doctor upped it to twice a day and I'm sleeping more and feeling much better.

Im using my husbands profile as I do to read the forums :);

I have bipolar disorder, though I am in between meds at the moment I have an appointment on the 9th May to sort out meds meds etc. I also take seroxat(paroxetine) for OCD and risperdal in the evenings. For bipolar Ive been on quetiapine and depokate but neither I found suitable, I am also concerned about the weight gain issue I already have weight issues(overweight!)

I hate the whole waiting and always get anxious taking new meds as I took some last year and they sent me a bit scatty!  Ive been on a bit of a down lately though my moods to change rapidly.

I have been on so many medicines I can't remember them all the only ones that helped anything was paxil but it only helped my OCD, prozac helped my moods and stuff but made me feel like I had no feelings. I have been on Risperdone and it didn't do anything for me. So evidently it is going to take a while to find something that works but I still have feelings with it. I am feelings better on my meds and I don't notice any mood swings except for the ones that are in a normal range which is good news I guess the rapid mood swings was just a quirk. Thanks for all the advice and kind words it really helped me out when I needed it.

some Docs have you use them in combination rather than just one.  Sorry it is such a struggle.

I would hope the meds won't do anything bad to us......I am not worried about it tho..I would rather live a healthy life now that worry about those things that 'might' happen to us in the future.

Time will indeed tell. That's one of the reasons I'm rather fond of some of the really old drugs out there, like Parnate, Nardil, Marplan, Dexedrine, Morphine, etc... They've all been studied to death and back again.

For instance, there are people who have been on Parnate for something like 35 years. You just can't get that kind of data from the newer drugs.

The SSRIs, to take an example, were recently shown to contribute to osteoporosis.

For me, the issue is even simpler. Let's take major depression as an example. Suicide risk (that is, successful suicide): 14.6%... Anything that has a lower chance of killing you than that is better than the alternative, with regard to dying. Similar arguments hold, IMO, for other potentially negative effects.
