I am not a physician, but I do work with individuals with mental illnesses. I guess I'm confused...what meds are you specifically taking? There are some anti-depressants that can directly negatively affect bi-polar disorders, ie. Prozac. There are also many medications simultaneously being used to treat the actual bi-polar and anti-depressants. Please keep in mind, that just because a medication has worked in the past does not mean it will work again, it most likely won't. One of the best books I've read is called the Bi-Polar handbook. It is written as a Q & A submitted by patients and answered in everyday ease. sas

I am on Lithium, and Lamictal. They seem to be working for me. Of course now I have to find health insurance because mine is ending at the end of this month, so I guess I won't have to worry about what the meds will do to me, since I won't be able to get them. I have took Prozac before the only bad effect it had on me was I felt like I had no emotions, I know Prozac can be bad for some people even if they don't have bi-polar.

zindy, one thing many of us who have medical problems have to be careful with is losing healthcare and changing jobs. i had my quintuple bypass. i have to be extremely careful. i could never be privately insured. i think most healthcare policies cover pre-exisiting conditions for a new employee but i might be wrong. minnetar

Well, I am losing me job to because of the fact that the store I work at is closing, so I am currently looking around for another job. I am trying to get a new medical program started by my states governor called CoverTennessee so I hope I will get that. Just gotta keep my fingers crossed. I know most health coverage provided by jobs do not cover mental health so I may be able to keep cover Tennessee even when I get another job.

something to consider is that Lithium is dirt cheap. Lamictal is not but you might still be able to continue your prescription through something like this: http://www.canadapharmacy.com/cart/index.cfm?fuseaction=product_detail&producturlname=Lamictal.Lamotrigine&productid=1594 Losing your job and going off your meds at the same time is obviously not recommended. :-) Leto

I know this may not be a very popular thing...but i stopped all my meds...i have bi-polar and also was told i have dissociative personality disorder. all the meds...(thorazine, meleril,and a few others along the way) and they were many...tore me up...it was easier(for me) to "ride out" my episodes and deal with seeing them for what they were/are and knowing i can get though them....

Well, for about 3 years I was off my meds and my husband/Master is also bi-polar and it is really hard for us to get along and have a good marriage when we are constantly arguing. So, we are both getting treatment. I think I can handle my moodswings also but Master doesn't, he says that I can't see how I can get at times and I guess I don't. When I am not on my meds I love to argue, and I get mad very easily. but with my meds I am not as easy to snap and I hate arguing. So, it evens things out for us.
