i have to agree with the part about education wholeheartedly. i went to a mostly black, hispanic, and asian public high school. we had the lowest grades, least amount of funding, etc. mainly because we were the "ghetto" school. however, i must admit, the population was about 30% white, so it's not always minorities that get the short end of the stick, although 95% of the time that's the case.

as far as the words "african american" go, well, i generally refer to black people as black people. that gets me in trouble with some (both black and white) who take offense to it, and others embrace it. i simply try not to use my references to people who aren't white (or who are white, for that matter) in a racist manner. some people just like to be called african-american...either because they are americans who immigrated from africa or because they think it's more pc or less racist or whatever. some don't. i try to call people what they want to be called because i don't like pissing people off.

and as far as being white and in america automatically meaning one can get a piece of the pie...well, it doesn't. sorry. i grew up in a predominantly poor white area, below poverty level, and faced many of the challenges resource and opportunity wise of many black kids i know. while the majority of poor people in this country are not white, poverty doesn't discriminate in the same way people do.

Racism affects so many facets of our lives we aren't even concious of - do not be fooled into believing that it has ended or is no longer relevant. It is and will be.

i think its interesting that "other" immigrants are held up as examples of what can be achieved having come over here in the last hundred years.  Onyx, still got that family pic of the crossing on the Mayflower?  There is a HUGE historical, cultural, psychological and societal difference when you compare the methods, means, and motives for the arrivals of different races/ethnicities and to imply that slavery has no repercussions today is erroneous.

To the OP: Take a good look in the mirror and see what has led you to post this in the first place and what influences have told you that you have been passed up for so much as a free donut because of preferential treatment for African Americans.

Status: offline 		I've always found it a great thing that in the realm of BDSM we can relate to an reenact social bull,  that we wouldn't be allowed to work out in mundane life. When I was in high school in the south, I had a huge crush on a very black black girl who simply had no interest in me, yeas later as a southern gay guy from that same south I've been called upon quite often to refer to my newfound playmate at a club as "Massa." A unique and privileged view we get to see that after so many years of history we still hold such bull at some secret corner of our beings.

Status: offline 		It will be enough when everyone (especialy all goverment agencies, school systems, etc) gid rid of that stuipd and vastly out dated boxs that people have to check what ethnic group they are. Since minorites are nearly always given extra breaks (see how agencies and school rate people for priortiy).

When I was not working and I went for public assistance for helth care. I was told I did not meet any requirements. Then they listed the requirements:

A) being a woman and I would have qualified
B) being a minority and I would have qualified
C) being disabled and I would have qualified
D) being the only parent (and have custidy) of a child and I would have qualified

Oh and when are schools going to start allowing scholorships exclusivily for NON-Minorities (since the have ones exclusivily for blacks, hispanics, women, and other minorites)?

Oh and BTW just becouse your born a white male doesn't mean you get breaks or its easier or your given the benifit for anything. Especialy if you come from a desitute family.

at least in florida, schools are not rated on who needs the most money. schools are rated on who makes the best fcat grades. minority schools do not make the best fcat grades, therefore predominantly minority schools do not get funding, therefore schools like the one i went to continue to turn out ninth grade kids who can't read past a fourth grade level.

i say predominantly minority because i'm a white, non-hispanic female who went to one such school, which was about 30-40% white and about 60-70% black, hispanic, asian, etc. pretty much all students were at or below poverty level.

This brought to mind an incident that the back up goalie on my H.S. soccer team had. She was born in South Africa, full blooded Dutch, they immegrated to the USA when she was young but was considered an "African" by the U.S. gov standards. She applied for African-American scholarships, recieved many offers but when it came time to do the interview they were shocked she was White (glow in the dark white). She sued one program in perticular, which then had to change it's requirements to black  African-Americans, after of course giving her enough money to fund her education in settlement.

The idea of "reverse racism" is insane, but than again i define "racism" to mean race proud, we should all be racists then.

So even IF the white male were to score the best in the admissions tests. If a minority is even close the school MUST tell the white male he is not admitted while the minority is allowed.

that's an affirmative action issue, which i think is different from what i was discussing. honestly, i really don't have an opinion on affirmative action; i've heard good arguments for and against it. to me, the issues in the public school system that keep poor people, period, most of whom ARE minorities, although not all, from even getting close to taking a college admissions test are a hell of a lot more important and tend to affect people's lives far more than the fewer and farther between cases of minorities being chosen over white college applicants. to me, fixing this particular issue instead of looking at the public school system as a whole would be like putting a bandaid on a tumor.

and I just wanted to add my .02 about the public schools..
it is not a racial issue anymore, inner city schools have less funds cause less people own homes in cities in general, the condition they are in is a poverty issue, and it just so happens that most of the poor people that live in urban areas are "minorities."
It use to be that any american, if they worked hard, could achieve "The american dream" regardless of race they could find their niche somewhere in this country, but now the gap between the "classes" is widening and it is swallowing up more people of all backgrounds.

Quite simply it is not....Consider it a make-up call.....

For several hundred years of oppression, shitty living conditions,education, not being rightfully approved for loans, racial profiling, lynchings,illegally being racially steered away from white areas(when purchasing property), driving while black, forced and coerced confessions...and the list goes on and on....

So every now and then ...There is the "make-up call".....Hmmmm?  it seems we have been imprisoning and executing blacks at an alarming rate ....Let's let O.J. Simpson go free....See!....Make-up call....all of our past sins washed away with one unjust verdict......

So just be thankful that your dad and his dad...and so on.... never had to worry about an education or attending a functon at "the club" where they would ever have to worry about brushing shoulders with those "undesirables.".....But now when it comes to today...The Make-Up call is inserted so when you go home and bitch and bitch about affirmative action your father and your  grandpappy can slap their knees and laugh in recollection of the good ol' days.

ALL schools are capable of making the grade. It really chaps my ass when people lower their expectations of the economically challenged, free lunch, mom works two jobs and dad is in jail kid- be he black, white, hispanic, or what. Some schools get more funding, some schools go out and make their own funding. Regardless of how much money is available, teachers teach. They scrape and scrounge and find ways to make things happen. Kids are kids are kids, and they will strive to reach whatever goal you put infront of them. The swinging pendulum of education is back at research-based curriculum, which leaves less room for teacher error and more room for student achievement. Schools are turning into labs and the students are showing the teachers what it is they need to learn by analyzing the data from test scores. Our poverty kids don't need a group hug, they need remediation. They need to be taught to survive in a literate world, no matter which side of the tracks they come from. No Excuses.

Education is not a right in this country...There has been talk about making an amendment that would require all to have access to the "same" education....If we are going to take the time to create an amendment that would ban gay marriage maybe it is time to consider one that actually has merit.

It is true that many different peoples have come to the U.S. and found success, Gris actually addressed this in his rant...However if you look at the fate of the peoples that have  beared the brunt of the historical racism of this country the results are disparagingly tragic...Both the Blacks as well as the Native Americans have not enjoyed the success of other "immigrants" who have reached our shores.

I just love when someone speaks up and proves beyond a shadow of a doubt how some non-whites can be more racist than whites. Especially against their own. The use of the phrase "right color" shows that even some have no respect for their own race, let alone any others. There is no "right color" there is poverty across the board, regardless of color. However, only 'some' choose to play the race card in regards to why they are poor. Look at the after effects of Hurrican Katrina......there are people who got off their butts, found a job and got back on their feet TWO WEEKS after the tragedy. And there are others who are still on government funds almost TWO YEARS later.

I am further "amused" how the only ones who seem to play a race card are those considered to be "of race," such as "I only get pulled over because I am 'x' race," etc, etc. And don't even get me started on things like black awards shows or beauty pageants. Evidently not 'every' race truly wants equality. As it's been said, let someone have an all white awards show and watch the ensuing fury. Yet BET or Vibe can have an all black show (at which it seems someone almost always gets stabbed, beaten, shot, etc) yet that's not racist. I have never seen a White Entertainment Network either for that matter. Why is it that non-whites are the ones who cry about equality and then they work so hard to segregate themselves more than the white ever could?

Every race has their productive members and every race has their 'trash.' There is no "right color." It's time people get off their butts and do something to improve their own situation and realize that no one is going to do it for them. I LOVE reading in the news when Bill Cosby gives a speech somewhere. I just love how a self-made man like that can look at those who might blame others for their problems and tell them to get off their lazy butts and fix things for themselves.

Let's face it people, racism will never end because those considered to be "of race" will never let it die. Every time something bad happens or they don't get what they feel they deserved (but didn't work for) is suddenly all about race. No matter how much whites 'apologize' for slavery (which I personally will never do, as my ancestors never owned any and I can prove it) the issue will never be laid to rest. I am completely convinced that in the year 3000, if we even make it that far, slavery and it's 'effects' will still be used as an excuse as to why some are 'owed' something by the government.

Sad but true.

at my school, kids were too busy making their own funding for clubs to have any. we were expected to teach ourselves what we actually needed to learn about reading, writing, and arithmetic; teachers were expected to teach to the test, which is all standardized testing scores in florida have shown the school system. you're damn straight that kids born into poverty often need remediation. remediation requires money that most schools with poverty-level students don't have. the day somebody shows me how the fcat actually measures student achievement, and how teaching to the fcat has helped poverty-level kids in the florida public school system learn anything, or, for that matter, how kids who are often working full time when they're still in high school to help provide for their families are supposed to then be responsible for funding their own public school education is somehow acceptable...well...i like my crow with tabasco sauce.

some x blame y for their situations
some people regardless of what group will whine and complain.

Are some people over-emphasizing racism and whatnot when trying to rationalize not having a job/home/etc? yes. Does that mean these things aren't factors? No.

Alot of things people associate with race, on both sides of the fence are really socio-economic class issues. "But there are more poor blacks/hispanics/etc." Yes white people had a head start. Oh well, you can sit and complain about it or we can run and catch up.

You white people really shouldn't be complaining about these "unfair advantages" that people are getting due to race because it is really a hinderance on a whole promoting apathy and the victim mentality that keeps people focused on waiting to get what they are owed instead of going out and earning their own way.

i'm familiar with the fcat, and i agree, it's no prize. and thanks to our federal government, neither are the ten or so other tests required these days to prove our kids are learning. teachers do end up teaching to the test, i'll give you that. but that's not all that happens, and not all of that is useless information. i don't happen to agree with standardized testing methods, but seeing how the people enforcing them are rarely teachers, there isn't much of a hope of showing them the evil of their ways. they run education like a business and demand results. just look at the no child left behind monstrosity. a teacher worth her salt knows how to pick and choose and slide those extras in that won't show up on the test but are still important.
as for funding, i've mentioned a bumper sticker i have, "it will be a great day when our schools get all the money they need and the air force has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber." just about every public school in this country has to come up with funding of some sort. i don't agree with the lettering system in place in florida and other areas and the funding that goes with it. i don't think it's an incentive to anyone except administration. and i agree, no child should have to worry about funding his education. it has been my experience that low income communities offer a lot of support- if you ask. between the pta, the local pizzeria sponsoring an event, a larger company someone has written to for donations, someone at school writing a grant or two, and kids doing those gift wrap/candy fundraisers, things get done. and sometimes they get done because an underpaid teacher reaches into her own pocket to provide for her students.
my point was that money should not stop academic success. there are too many success stories in just about any occupation out there to say that a poor kid can't get to the top.

Well said soulKnife. You had me right up until that last bit, however.

You see, 'so called' affirmative action really isn't.

Affirmative action can only do ONE of two possible things. It either:
1. Gives extra help to minorities who are inferior, thereby placing them on an even starting point with their white counterparts or,
2. It gives minorities an unfair advantage by giving extra points to a person would would otherwise be perfectly equal to their white counterparts, thereby ensuring they are always chosen over whites.

So which is it? I'm afraid it can't be both. Either minorities are inferior to whites, and need the help, or they are equal to the whites and somehow still deserving of 'special treatment' that ensures that their color, and not their merits gets them acceptance. That is a question I would not like to have to answer.

Personally, if I were black, I wouldn't want affirmative action in place. I would not ever want to find out that I would not have gotten a job if not for my skin color giving me 'extra points.'

And as far as the slavery being used so frequently as an excuse, I have another question to pose:
Who is more at fault for slavery's effects? Those who purchased slaves from the traders, or those who sold their own countrymen into slavery in the first place? I hear blacks complaining semi-regularly about how this country owes them something because of slavery. Ummm slavery is over. When it ended, the ancestors of those people who complain CHOSE to stay here. Me? I would have gone back to my OWN country and demanded reparations from them. Or sought the ones who 'sold me' and exacted my own justice.

If you want to stay and be American....then be American. Don't be Black American or African American (a joke really since many of today's generation have never even seen Africa if not for TV). Just be AMERICAN.

Racism will never die if we don't let it.

Status: offline 		I know this veers off topic a bit but I figured I'd comment and ask if anyone has any similar experiences:

I never grasped the concept of racism until I was maybe 13..... I attended an elementary school which had 400 students and among them over 100 different nationalities. People were people..... period... Then I went to a private (non religious) Junior High School which was ALL "white kids"....... I didn't even notice until a few months into attending the school when someone mentioned it..... I learned words I vowed to myself to never verbally repeat.... all kinds above and beyond the most commonly heard..... The sad thing is, I repeat them now in my head almost every time I see people... Technically I was calling myself some of these things because even though I look like a "white kid" I am actually part Mexican, part Aboriginal, and many other things that many people would never think to see me as. Whenever I start saying these things in my mind I just start repeating over and over again "People are beautiful! People are beautiful!" - Anyone else have any other ways of coping?

Status: offline 		I've never been the type to pay attention to color, however, I have seen how it's used for and against different ethnic groups.  Personally, affirmative action needs to be gone...I have seen far too many white males lose out on jobs they are OVER-qualified for to a minority, yes, this includes women, simply based on their race or sex.  Afirmative action was good in it's time, but society has outgrown it's use as there have been changes made.  I have no problem in awarding a job to one who is qualified, provided it's not based on your ethnic make up. 

Having worked in law enforcement for the last 25 years, i've seen the race card played time and time again.....i couldn't even approach a black person without immediately hearing how i'm a racist honkie bitch!  I've been cussed at and called all sorts of names, even when I've tried to help people...and I AM a minority!  Surprisingly enough, the one place that the whole race issue never really played out was in the military...there, everyone is OD Green...yes, racism exists in the military, as much as sexual harassment does, but overall, it's not at the level it is on the outside....there, you're judged on your skills, not so much the color of your skin.  Keep in mind, i was in the military in the early 80's and 90's......can't speak for what it is now.

And on a humorous little side note, our dept is doing a citizen's police academy, and we got an enrollment form from a person today by fax....we have to check their crimnal history.  Anyway, there was the usual place for race to be filled in....the person put in HUMAN!  We got a kick out of it anyway...guess you had to be there.  At least he didn't put "every night" in the space marked sex!  (Lucky him....or her!)

OK, done rambling.....blame the benadryl!

Status: offline 		To address the thread  as I interpret it. It seems like this is just a bit of fear of one word. Black.

When you say it, does it make your heart quiver a bit even when you're just referencing an object.

It can't be that its because the schools are Historically Black that is bothering you.  Can it?  All Historically Black means is that in history- in the past- only black people attended.  It distinguishes them from schools that already existed that are Historically White... historically- in the past, but you knew that because those were the only schools available then.

What is racist is to make sure that black people  or yellow people or brown and red  won't make it into your schools because you don't want to taint the "White Purity".  That is racist. Its not racist to aknowledge your history, keep it intact but grow and be inclusive of all races.  You need to ask yourself why do you want an all white school? What prejudices do you have? Why do you feel them?  Why don't you apply to an Historically Black College or University?  Did something happen to you that makes you wish your school was all white?

This is hella deeper than what you are saying. No one just busts out with an eye catcher phrase like you did then asks a totally different question that has nothing to do with Dom/me relations.
