i know more people than not, that think and feel like you do; i'm not one of them, however, it doesn't mean that i don't understand it...
i find that 'many, not all' who have had some sort of religious upbringing or a corporal punishment dynamic in their upbringing, feel they are only loved or more loved, through corporal punishment/attonement; just depends on where your head is and if it works for you or not. ..
personally, i was brought up with corporal punishment dynamics in homes where the punishment was more of a non-consensual sadistic act then an act of love, so i don't feel better through punishment of this nature; i feel resentment and remorse towards the punisher so those methods are not incorporated into my relationships.
