Ever since Oscar De La Hoya returned from the 1992 Barcelona Olympics with a gold medal, fulfilling a deathbed promise to his mother, he has been boxing’s “Golden Boy”—in and out of the ring. He has long been about the only bankable fighter outside the heavyweight ranks and now is virtually the only genuine contender at any weight whose name is familiar to the average sports fan. Through 15 years, 42 pro fights and six world championship belts, De La Hoya has taken on the challenge of the fight game’s best—from Julio Cesar Chavez to Felix Trinidad, from Shane Mosley to Bernard Hopkins. But he probably never imagined there would come a day when he would enter the ring as a 2-1 underdog.

That’s the challenge facing De La Hoya—now 34 and with only one fight since he was KOed, for the first time in his career, by Bernard Hopkins back in 2004—when he steps into the ring Saturday night in Las Vegas to challenge Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the WBC super welterweight title. Mayweather is 30 years old, undefeated in 37 career fights and has himself held four titles. But even more notable, among boxing insiders, he now reigns as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, and is regarded as such a dazzling talent that he would rate consideration for that unofficial, but prestigious title in any era.

I'd love to be able to watch this!

minnetar, if I had to guess, it'd be Mayweather. But I'm hoping Oscar will make magic.

No.  But Oscar De La Hoya is HOT!

I'd be amazed if Mayweather doesn't win convincingly - De La Hoya past his best, Mayweather in his prime.

If De La Hoya can force Mayweather to the ropes and block him in he will have an advantage. Mayweather tends to leave himself open in that situation. Blocking with a shoulder roll and a duck on the left rather than keep his gloves up and block manually on both sides, if you notice he tends to keep his right up near his face and his left out at waist level.

I think this could well go the distance if Oscar is aggressive and uses his left as successfully as he has in the past. He's never really used any type of defense (and frankly never had to) until maybe the mid to late 90s. Can't remember the actual fight opponent but I know it made him rethink defense as a whole and work on it. Didn't he beat a Mayweather in the early 90's? Dad?Uncle? Cousin of Floyd's?

Regardless who wins it should be a great fight and if I didn't have to work I would be on my way to Vegas now!

I would like to see Oscar take it to the end though.

Deja vu all over again...reminds me of a previous 'golden boy' Ray 'Boom Boom' Mancini, and his dramatic and touching fight to win the title.
Unfortunately , they forgot to give a copy of the script to his opponent Livingstone Bramble, who thougthlessly whomped the bejeezus out of Ray...two times.

Mayweather will be far ahead in the fight, will act like a hotdog, and get knocked out by Oscar.

The only one I could find was a Jeff Mayweather; Oscar got a TKO in the 4th round, the bout was in 1993. Bet that's the one you're thinking of. Good memory!

And according to Wikipedia, Floyd is Jeff's nephew.

Ooh.....it could be just like wrestling..... Floyd's on the ropes, and all of a sudden Jeff comes out from underneath the ring, and hits Oscar with a chair......

Will Trump hit her with his hair, or will her mouth prevail? lol

And what's the deal with rich guys and their hair?? Someone needs to talk to Trump and Gene Simmons. If I had their money, I'd have hair that'd make Fabio cry like a two year old.

Well Frankie Laine, a vocalist of the old school, who died just recently in his 90's said it was the Tiger Wilson Kid Macoy bout, which turned out to be the "Kids Last Fight"
So thats good enough for me !

Just a point of info. for you boxing enthusiasts, the fight actually took place in the summer of 93 about the the time Jack Johnson was up to his wicked ways.

For those who remember Musical Hall , Vaudeville, I believe there is a song called the Night I Fought Jack Johnson, where the great white hope was disadvantaged when the lights failed and he couldnt see Jack.
Anyone remember that ?

The things that crop up when you are searching for info !

I have seen a film of Jack Johnson fighting I thought it was Tex Willard but while trying to check I came across the fact that Jack Johnson actually fought Victor Maclauglan, the actor who had that hilarious fight with John Wayne in the 50's film the Quiet Man. If you haven't seen that then try to , the whole film is really funny.

Tex Willard turned out to be Jess Willard and even more amazing Victor Maclauglin was a Brit. lol

Another point about about boxing I always thought that Joe Louis was ,shall we say a cultured precise boxer, if you know what I mean, but when he got the upper hand he was totally brutal.
This is not meant to be disparaging, boxing is a brutal game, its just that my image of the Brown Bomber wasn't totally accurate.

Another point crosses my mind, many fights today are, to coin a phrase <as bent as a two bob watch>
I remember watching a film of Sugar Ray Leonard and someone I cant recall and they were at it hammer and tongs for 15 rounds. At the end both fighters were totally unmarked.

Both of Ali's fights with Liston were more than a bit iffy too.

De la Hoya's gonna get all pussy-like over his pretty face, and will go down rather than Owen Wilsonify his nose.

Yours,

The boxers have to be able to get into the same weight class.

Wont happen.

I am not sure that Owen Wilson having his nose broken 7 times has hurt his career any.
