" PARIS (Reuters) - Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy won France's presidential election on Sunday, beating his Socialist rival Segolene Royal by a comfortable margin and extending the right's 12-year grip on power.

Within minutes of polls closing, Royal conceded defeat in a speech to party faithful in the heart of Paris.

"I hope that the next president of the republic fulfils his role in the service of all French people," she said.

Forecasts by four pollsters showed Sarkozy, 52, a hard-line former interior minister, won around 53 percent of the vote in the second-round ballot and will succeed fellow conservative Jacques Chirac, who was president for 12 years.
Turnout was predicted at about 85 percent. "

At least according to Royal and she is probably right. Sarkozy (according to reputation) is a French Margeret Thatcher and will probably throw the baby out with the bath water, start a couple of neo-colonial wars and basically do anything to show that France has a new pair of balls but unlike the British who accept shit, the French who find themselves losing out will probably throw a few Molotov cocktails.

My money is on there being riots if he does all he says he is going to do. Rioting is a French national passtime.

There are 3000 extra police on duty in Paris tonight, waiting ready for trouble out in the poorer suburbs. Might not be expected, but its been planned for that the pesky immigrant peasants might become more revolting than before.

As much as I have never believed there was a modern conservative revolution, the fact that FRANCE elected a pro-America, pro-EU candidate really raises my doubts on the possibility.

Good to see democracy at work and, at least in the present in France, the reaction to it by the self-identified "left".

The "vote for me or let the rioting begin!" candidate was a better prophet than her long dead countryman, Nostradamus.

It is misplaced assigning blame to the "left" it is not the left rioting, it is the people best served by leftist, nanny state, politics. The "entitlement" crowd is reacting with riots to the possibility of being required to work and contribute.

Looking forward to the rationalized excuses, but the bottom line is that the majority of French people have tired of supporting those who believe that from their first breath to their last, the State must take care of them.

SHIT! Does this means Johhey Depp is moving back to live full time in the USA? What about Pierre Salinger? Danm, I hear Alec Balwin was just getting ready to pack too! Maybe this swayed the election?

It is misconceived to think that it is believers of the cradle to the grave people that support the status quo. Many middleclass and affluent French don't like the rightwing agenda and there are many workingclass ultra rights that do believe in the rightwing agenda. From what I understand, the difference of opinion between the left and right is not all about social welfare, it is about what they perceive to be the soul of France. It is dificult to put into words but anyone who has lived there will understand that France has a quality that most other countries don't have. The fear is that Sarkozy will destroy that quality in his desire to crush resistance to his reforms which is what many people fear and that is not restricted to any one class or income group.

beth lived there for a year and she agrees with you on the identity of the French people to a French "soul". she claims that this was a "correcting" election. A soul adjustment to the reality of economics. The vote may be a reaffirmation of reality. As much as the French State would love to feed and care for every individual in France, the numbers aren't there to support the effort.

I also can not find any reference to a riot currently occurring in France as of 3:00 p.m. PDST.  My apologies to base an opinion on non-confirmed information. At this point all's quiet. It's great. The measure of a democracy is in its ability to transmit power from one ruling party to another without riots and bloodshed. I expect that the defeated Ms. Royal will do her best to unify her followers with the victorious Mr. Sarkozy.

There have been film on the news here of riots in Paris but thay are apparently only small but then 1968 started with a minor protests. You just don't know in France if such a protest will catch fire or not. Ever since the French revolution the French think it is their right to fight against their would be masters.

"PARIS (Reuters) - Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy triumphed in France's presidential election on Sunday, sweeping aside his Socialist rival Segolene Royal on the back of a huge turnout that gave him a powerful mandate for reform.

Thousands of rightist supporters flooded into central Paris to celebrate the victory, but there were also skirmishes between leftist sympathizers and police in at least one city square and reports of sporadic violence in two suburbs near the capital."
