Oh, and I'm citing you for ellipsis abuse you fucking incoherent cum-guzzling cocksmack.

Ha! How pathetic you are you have to resort to such ugly ad homs and childish tantrums when you have no defense for my assertions that Classical Liberalism is a wet dream sham that never saw the light of day, that its founder was a despicable profiteer on the slave trade and a despicable human being just as the Founders of this nation were and just as you are.

Classical Liberalism in theory never in application arose from Locke's social compact collectivist musings as a protectionist racket for privileged, white male land owners paying only lip service to equality of law (the hallowed Bill of Rights) which had to be earned by the commons in defiance of brutal suppression by the state.

Wot! Have you no defense to that? Instead you attack the bearer of bad news (for you) Well, I am always happy to enlighten a delusional sod like yourself.

Some intelligent debate from you else we shall have to assume that you are not capable of it. More than likely that is the case.

Oh please. You're spouting the socialist party line and it's pathetic.

Socialism is the philosophy of the cynical, fed to a constituency of the naive and stupid.

There you go. You cannot defend Classical Liberalism, the white man's protectionism, the slave holders bloody flag.

I don't need to defend it, you moron - you've made no argument, just asserted a bunch of nonsense for which you have no evidence - and worse - no understanding.

Honestly, you regurgitating fuckers are both boring and stupid. You clearly, obviously, PATENTLY cannot think.

LMFAO!!!!!

Locke knew that the accumulation of property and wealth could be unlimited and monopolized. That was the flaw in his Liberal Utopia. He could only hope the government would somehow apply fairness. Do you deny that?

The benefits of the Bill of Rights had to be won on the bloody ground in the streets by women and workers and blacks. Do you deny that?

Only white male landowners were part of the social compact in Locke's Liberalism and in the fancies of the Founders. Can you deny that?

Locke and Madison and Jefferson were slave profiteers. Deny?

Classical Liberalism was a scam to benefit property holders. Locke claimed that property arose in the state of nature and preceded the social state. Can you deny that?

Do you have any intelligent reply or are you just as we suspect a hollow sod?

I know Awareness isn't the sharpest poster on the board (no matter how much he wants to believe he's a genius), but I'm really shocked that even he can argue that socialism is cynical. Seriously, it's like he wants everyone to believe he's saying something sophisticated, but with zero real insight... so it comes off like a guy who has heard other people using a lot of adjectives in an aggressive, angry manner and decided to apply every single one of them to anything he thinks is bad.

The most important premise underlying socialist thought is that people are inherently capable of far more than they currently know, and their potential is being limited by the capitalist state that exploits and/or sedates them. The whole point of the socialist state is to provide people with opportunities that will allow them to develop to meet that potential, rather than everything being determined by socioeconomic class, race, religion, etc. Socialism does not mean making the capitalist state stronger!!!!

Socialism is inherently optimistic and idealistic, especially with regards to human potential... more often than not, it aspires to the utopian Earth you can see in Star Trek, the objectively noble egalitarianism you see in Scandinavian societies, the multicultural mosaic of Canada.

The cynical people are the ones who assume that anyone who fails is simply naturally weak and could never have done any better, the ones who consistently declare that the 'others' are naturally inferior (poorer nations, inferior races, inferior religions, etc), or the ones who assume that nearly everyone is weak and needs 'great men' (usually wealthy, upper class industrialists) to give them all of the great things that they couldn't possibly achieve for themselves. This is the basis of Ayn Rand's school of thought, and it's the most cynical, degrading message ever put forward in America-- that most people are basically shit or at the very least disposable... and we all owe everything we have to the undeserved compassion of our wealthy betters.

Socialism is the exact opposite of that-- the end of the class system. It's about making people better than they currently are... whether or not you think that is ultimately possible doesn't matter. It definitely isn't cynical.

Sure, this message has in the past been perverted to suit the needs of totalitarian dictators, but it's pretty fucking dishonest to intentionally ignore the most basic ideas of a concept just because your ridiculously partisan mindset desperately needs it to be everything that is dark and wrong in the world.

A'ness generalizes socialism to equate it with tyrannical Communism.

As for property profiteers, he is either ignorant of our history of oppression of blacks by wealth hoarding plantation elites in the South and of oppression of hard working immigrants in Northern sweat shops throughout the industrial revolution or he is willfully mendacious. Probably both. He needs turn his eyes away from the failure of Locke's/Rand's greedy philosophies. So, he resorts in his feeble retorts to name calling and insults. There has never been a more despicable poster in this forum.

I completely agree.

He's a humorless, unimaginative sociopath who brings nothing but darkness and hate to any thread he participates in. Most of the RWNJs are amusingly lost, and while frustrating, at the very least can make me smile from time to time. I even kinda like some of them, no matter how much I disagree with them or think they're insane/not so bright... at least I get the sense they're probably alright once you get them off the Internet.

Awareness is pretty much the demon from the Exorcist as an uber-misogynistic pick up artist who thinks he understands politics.

Well i would think that is what taxes would be for... so that wealth accumulation could be somehow controlled by taxes.

Sadly, people would actually have to pay their taxes for that one to work.

So what do you think are the downsides to socialism?

-It's difficult to actually achieve, and difficult to sustain.

-the government undoubtedly becomes far more pervasive, however I don't think this is as bad as the pervasiveness of a capitalist-driven consumer culture.

-salaries for skilled professionals may not be as high.

-difficult to convince people to do 'demeaning' or 'dirty' work

-environmental protections can slow economic growth, however can also lead to more innovative solutions

-higher salaries result in higher prices of goods

-welfare parasitism

-less freedom of choice, though I don't always consider this a bad thing

-higher taxes, probably on consumer goods

-huge potential for brain drain

Since no one has ever actually asked me and just assumes I support whatever Hillary wants or some sort of SJW nightmare of political correctness and to hell with everything else, I support a fully globalized society with reasonably regulated trade between nations, as well as globally regulated, environmentally conscious industries, and high taxes so that the bulk of the profits from those businesses are given back to the people in the form of social programs, especially in the form of universal education, daycare, health care, and extensive support systems for people who are out of work that will help them get back to work more quickly if they become obsolete.

I lived in Denmark for a year and they had most of these things in place... it was a great vibe. It wasn't perfect and in some ways the welfare system does contribute to parasitism... but the worst aspects of that system by far were things like protectionist taxes that did things like raise the price of electronics to almost double what you would pay in North America. I will admit I missed being able to afford new technology... and I just couldn't bring myself to trust the domestic brands. Though it seemed obvious that the government was going out of their way to make them competitive for the sake of the workers, it really sucks for the people who have to buy them. I don't know what the government did with the money, but sufficed to say the state was large and pervasive enough that I'm sure jobs were created by it.

Another serious problem was that health care, while free even to myself as a non-citizen on a working holiday visa, was extremely inconvenient... where I was living, you needed to book an appointment at least a month, preferably 2 in advance. This was largely due to the brain drain from countries where doctors were given higher salaries from private clinics-- similar to what happens in Canada. The government's solution was to encourage physical fitness and ban trans fats and certain harmful food ingredients... it was rare that you would go an entire day without seeing someone exercising in public, and a lot of the junky food products and junky restaurants that are widely available in the US are either really expensive or unavailable there. It means some things were more expensive, sure... but it also means less trips to the doctor on the whole... well, except when it comes to alcohol.

I think that any society that adopted the spirit if not the letter of this type of system would be a lot happier, a lot healthier, a lot smarter and generally less likely to destroy itself or the rest of the world than the US.

Thanks for such a thoughtful response. So what are people's primary motivations for such things as innovation in a socialist society?

Right. Republicans have been cutting taxes since Reagan with the stated purpose of "strangling the beast" (Federal Government)

I have this idea of 'patriotic capitalism' in my head which would be something like... instead of a general tax that businesses would pay to the government, some type of funds would be set up that businesses would pay into (infrastructure fund; veterans fund; education fund) that would be managed not by the government but separately by the people. But it would be required that they pay, but perhaps they could choose).

That is an interesting idea. Original with you? Excellent.

I prefer our current hybrid system as opposed to what HB described in Denmark. I would like to see the banks re-regulated and the SEC's powers over the stock and bond markets strengthened, especially over the derivatives markets. I would also like to see a reaffirmation of our stewardship over the environment. I am quite unhappy that Trump's new budget is cutting funds for the EPA. I am happy he is not touching funding for Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security. Not convinced our military and nuclear arsenals need beefing up, tho.

Who would supervise the Funds you propose?

Yes... it's an idea i've been bouncing around in my head for almost 2 years now. This is the first time i've mentioned it to anyone. My thoughts is that there would be a separate organization that would manage it. Probably elected. But i honestly don't know enough to figure out the best way to make it work.
