As the mother of a 20 year old young man with ADD and a younger brother who has PDD (a form of autism) and ADHD, I can tell you that the thoughts of their acting out or being unable to control themselves being a result of lack of discipline and poor parenting are alive and well, thank you very much. I can't tell how many times monster #3 had a meltdown or was bouncing all over and I was told to my face that I needed to discipline them more or get MY act together. For some odd reason, I got to be a Mistress of the Snarky Comeback for those assholes. Especially since they were the same people who would scream "child abuse" if I actually disciplined the monsters.

i think, as a mom of one with sensory issues too, you can relate to the nightmare of buying his first pair of shoes

Status: offline 		  It's been a CRAZY day today at the office.
Around 9:30am I get a call from our Receptionist telling me someone collapsed several offices away from me (think adjascent bldg) & I go RUNNING full blast trying to find his office not knowing what I'd find. Thank God I found him w/no delays, he was pretty sickly (seizures, no code). I stayed w/him until the EMS Unit arrived, getting his medical history etc. WIthin 15 minutes of me getting back to my desk, I rec'd another call that someone was "down" outside...."possibly struck by a car"....of course TWO bldgs. over, so I grab my coat, run like hell downstairs & outside w/o putting my coat on.  Luckily the EMS Unit arrived before I did so I just helped load him onto the cot & into the unit.
Oh, did I mention I was wearing a short skirt & high heels during all this running?????? 

I just finished my Wed. projects on time, thank goodness and now I'm here to brighten up YOUR day!  (No, I won't leave)

Status: offline 		ADD and ADHD are diagnosis that worry me when I hear them.  I do know that some school systems push for kids to be diagnosed with them.  Schools receive more money for these students.  So, I am leery about rushing to meds. 

As far as kids acting up in public.  My opinion of parenting skill depends on the behaviour.  For example. . . today, while shopping, an about 18 month old, was with their adult, and the adult was trying to get the kiddo interested in the book she had for him.  As I was going past, the UM decided my cart looked more interesting, and toddled over to look into it.  This was not a problem in my mind.  Example 2:  Same store, a seven to nine year old, running back and forth in front of carts by the checkstand, causing myself and others to have to stop suddenly, with no apology or even paying attention, WHILE dad ignores him and talks on his cell phone.  This I find to be a problem. 

Anyways, just my two-cents.

Status: offline 		ok. short term - anyone got any good ideas about how to handle a swollen achilles tendon? i've got cold pack, i've got anti-inflammatory - neither are doing anything. hurts as much now as yesterday this time when i went to the dr.

i've got to get on a plane tomorrow! fortunately a short trip, but i'll have to leave early so i have time to hobble, and i have to try and catch a train on the other end....

i hurt!

Where is one of those silly nurse-type people that seem to infect this thread?

Whether you use heat or ice depends on a couple of things. . .

1.  When the swelling started (you use one in the first 24-36 hours, and then you use the other one) and no, I cannot recall which one you use first.

2.  Which one actually FEELS better.  If heat gives you more relief than ice, use that.  And vice - versa. 

3.  Sometimes you need to alternate.  Ten minutes with ice, ten with heat, and then switch.  Something like that. 

You also might try taking a dose of tylonal with your ibuprofen. 

I am sure you don't need me to tell you this, but, in this case, pain is your friend.  It is telling you to NOT overuse that foot.
