Has dropped a notch in my view. I would herald him as one who would not kowtow to the US or who knows, who was deposed by the CIA a while back and THE PEOPLE rose up and reinstated him to his rightful position as the duly elected President.

However recently it has been announced that he is not going to renew the license for a broadcasting outlet because they oppose him. Cited reasons are that they minimize everything good he has done, or instigated, and when the coup was happening they didn't broadcast the news, instead they put on a bunch of cartoons etc., from what I've read.

This is a bit of a letdown. I would handle it differently. Granted, they did not operate in the public interest, but to shut them down is not right. Media in the US does not operate in the public interest, and haven't for decades. What we are going through in the US should be yelled from every mountaintop. But instead they tell you on the news where you can get a good hairdo.

But this brings up another point. With all this corruption going on, not one major media outlet in the US opposes the government, ever. No matter what happens it is all OK, as long as that advertising money comes in.

We have a "partnership" between big business, the media and the government, but don't call it a conspiracy. They say it is not, so it is not. Apparently Chavez has been unsuccessful or unwilling to install such a conspiracy in Venezuela (yes, that WOULD be a conspiracy because the US gov says so).

And you mean to tell me that this station has been allowed to operate all these years ? How long did it take them to get rid of Don Imus ? Why didn't Chavez just take over that station after the coup, change the call letters to "El Presidente" and be done with it ? Answer : because he is not the dictator they make him out to be.

If I were he, I would hire someone to watch that station 24/7 and report to me everything they said about me, and rebut it. As intelligently and precisely as I possibly could. I would endevor to make them look like assholes. Chavez is not stupid, and as President can usurp programming for national announcements, like they do here every time Dubya speaks. They don't like me, fine, I'll do it when they are supposed to be running their most popular shows.

Question is, if a TV network or station in the US constantly went against the powers that be, how long do you think they would last ? I would bet not long.

This is still disturbing, he has stood against the powers that think they be all over the globe and has been successful thus far. He had enough popular support to throw the CIA out on their ear. The only reason I can figure out for this is that he is relatively fair, and a competent leader. This action will cost him big in public opinion, not only in Venezuela, but around the globe.

Or is it that power corrupts, and he is going to become what they call him ? I think it is a very bad move to quell opposition by this method, even though they do it here every day. You don't know how bad it is here until shit happens to you. And when it does the media will be silent.

This action by Chavez proves one thing, that they do not have a conspiracy between the Vanezuelan government and the media, if they did, it would never happen. But it is happening now. That is not a good thing.

Comment if you want, but I am ending this now. I am in search of some good news, it is Saturday.

Alexander Hamilton was an orphaned bastard who ran a general store.

John Hancock was a smuggler.

Toussaint Louverture was a livestock handler and a slave.

Benjamin Franklin was a printer.

Harry Truman failed at every business he tried.

Ronald Reagan was a hack actor--"Bedtime for Bonzo" anyone?

Jesus Christ was the son of a poor carpenter.

I find it amazing that many on the left actually like this clown. And the lefties that support him brush off any and all criticism as "American propaganda."

The man is a dictator. It is that simple.

Yanno, Putin  was gonna be the big savior and return the Russians to a martial soviet state, and we went thru some regime changes in south america in the 70s and 80s that had the Caspar Milquetoast crowd quaking in their boots.  Castro is a bad, bad man because we can't get cigars legally............Ortega and so on---

What else can these guys do but ooze volumes of ineffectual rhetoric?

If they slip their nose under our tent we will just piss on it.

They are just a flash in the pan.

Good morning, my friend. I may have fallen to the right today, but of course, I fell out on the left side yesterday, thus the law of averages points to me climbing out of bed from the middle

Why don't rightwing Americans look at the facts before they accuse everyone they dislike of being dictators? Maybe American media is just propaganda and it really isn't your fault? Let's take a look at the situation in question, the closing, the recinding of the licence for the TV network in question. There are two important facts.

1. The network in question openly called for the overthrow of the democratically elected government and when a coup attempt was made, openly supported the illegal coup attempt.

If a TV network in the USA openly called for the overthrow of the democratically elected government. it would be summarily shutdown and its executives arrested, never mind leaving them to broadcast after an actual coup attempt they supported.

2. When Chavez was seeking re-election it was in his election manifeato that should he get elected he would recind the operating licence of the said TV network. Chavez was elected by the popular vote and recinding the network's licence was democratically voted for. If people didn't want the network to close down and found it an important enough issue, they could have voted for the opposition.

I suggest those who glibbly call Chaves anti-democratic to ask themselves why the media they use to keep themselves informed, don't keep them informed. Maybe they have more important objectives like keeping their customers ignorant?

I wanted to comment on this part of your post. Our media is just another business. I do not watch it, I mostly do not read it, and I get my news often from inde sources or the UK. I do not trust the US media at all..

You know, you are not a consumer of media, you are a product to be sold to advertisers. I refuse to be sold as market share or a demographic.. it sickens me

"Chavez is a threat because he exportxs a form of radical populism"

That is your tax dollars at work. And I don't pay anymore, at least knowingly.

My salary negotiations are based on take home pay only, I leave it up to the employer to pay or not pay, that is not my problem. I bet they would love it if I got married and had a bunch of kids, but when I negotiate a deal to my advantage, IT IS.

So he exports "radical populism", isn't populism power of the People ? So in light of the history of this country how can it be radical, unless we are not practicing it.

Their agenda is not to sell my eyes and brain to advertisers... I do not like commercial media very much and I avoid it... of course occasionally I will read a story from "mainstream media", but I am well aware of whose interests are reflected in it, and they are not my interests as a regular person... nor are they your interests

Then the question is: who do they want to sell your eyes and brain to? Everyone has an agenda. It is only a question of what the agenda is and whether or not we agree to go along with it.

As for Chavez, the man can now rule by decree ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6277379.stm ). He's a dictator.

Edited to add:  clicking on the link doesn't work.  I don't know why.  It does work if you copy it and paste it into the URL thingy.

I did not state they had no agenda, did I? I said that the media I read does not have direct advertisers.

You do realize how advertising dollars affect what you see in the media, don't you?

I prefer books, alternative news, listener supported outlets and the like... even PBS and NPR have been compromised.
