I've never much cared for anything with caffiene in it.  So, there are people out there who don't need it ever.
It has never benefitted me in any way.  Beyond when I drink a soda I'm thirsty for water after.

Although I believe that is the sugar making me thirsty.

Caffiene is a drug.  It is hard to kick an addiction.  It can be done but certainly not easy.

Awww flatterer
Could I offer your a cup of tea instead? Milk? Sugar? One lump or two?

But seriously when I worked behind the scenes at an NZ hospital, the medical professionals regarded Soda (what Kiwi's call "soft drink") as being unbelievably more evil than tea or coffee. And this was before the whole Soft Drink "rewriting DNA " when interacting with vitamin C came out.

Coffee is relatively straightforward, historically known and it's side effects are straightforward. Everyone except the cardiac and surgical crowd, guzzles it.

Soft drink's aren't much of a caffeine source. Coke and mountain dews a fraction that of a cup of instant coffee, which in turn's a fraction that of barrista coffee.
When you scull the fizzy liquid, the energising effect is mostly from the 8 teaspoons of sugar, forced by the bubbles through your intestine wall, into your blood stream, faster than your body can absorb, hence the surplus of blood sugar.

Apparently large amounts of sugar hitting your system don't just hose your GI, they might trigger diabetes. And those bubbles give the body less time ot cope.

Diet Soda's are worse. Aspartame (NutraSweet) is currently undergoing trial by media, medicine and PR. It does get broken down into Phenylalanine, which does affect brain neurotransmitter function a small bit. But the arguments raging about whether this small bit is linked to the rise in brain tumours, fatigue and depression. I first heard of it a decade ago, from pilots anecdotally claiming it gave them vertigo, which was a bad thing in their profession

I'm not a doctor, but the impression I left with
Was that sugar free Coffee reduces your diabetes risk and parkinsons. And as far as vices go, its benefits may outweigh its risks, and it's among the least worst you can have (compared with the stuff an A&E dept gets to see's)

Plain soft drink increases the risk of getting diabetes. Diabetes is the second biggest destroyer of internal organs, after heart disease in NZ. People *really* want it banned from schools etc.

Diet soft drinks will barely affect the brain chemistry of normal people (for TBA values of "barely") but will severely affect people with a genetic weakness for Phenylketonuria (ie seizures and mental retardation).
Offically there's no grey area's in the middle. And unoffically the mental and neuro wards staff don't touch the stuff.

I am not addicted.  I can go days and weeks without much if any in my day to day.  I prefer to have it, because it does kep my headaches and other aches from getting unbearable. I wil never go as far as caffine pills, and my cdoctor is kept alerted to how much coffee I drink.  Wuth my low bood pressure and heart rate, I am still OK.

hmmm the autobio of an addict;
most of my folks are southern rooted, we're ween from mother's milk onto ice tea. about puberty i started with coffee and B12 vitamins by the handful, then at 16 i went to job corps where students weren't allowed coffee, but could drink soda. this is when i found the link in drinking soda and not getting migranes. and at this time my grandfather taught me a recipe of otc's that could help the headaches when your perscription ran out. six months later was able to make a cup of coffee just as before, but i didn't like it one bit. it made no sence because i loved it before. but since then, mnt. dew is almost the only drink i consume. i do smoke, but i was never addicted to anything else.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Y'all have raised a lot of interesting thoughts. my dad and his mother have diabetes, but they got it later. they're obese and have been big all their lives, still even getting my mother's "little genes" i don't want to risk that. i see the pain my dad goes through and wouldn't wish it on anyone.
i think i'm gonna ween off again, i did this before and worked myself down to 8oz a day, ( i started at nearly 3 liters ) my down fall was another move ( frequent with my Mate's line of work)
cinnomon huh. i can see that. clever. i don't think anyone's had any negitive results with that.
   thanks to A/all- phoenix

Why not just put warning labels on everything these days and be done with it?

information is everywhere. i've seen apples shrink wrapped with their nutritional value table on the wrapping. i'm not saying the obvivouse choking potential be rendered unto chicken bones, just that foods containing drugs be listed as such. it doesn't hurt to share knowledge that isn't commonplace. i don't think the fun is gone from my life, i still smoke in spite of the lables telling me not to, and i've even spilt coffee on my myself.
i can see your point, however. i had a hair-dryer warn me not to use it "while sleeping" or "in the bath,"

Drink away

If those scientmatists is all rong, then you'll get the refreshing drink that is flavour, fizz, water and eff all else.

But if they be the right, then think of the kinky potiential of mental retardation, the men in white coats, the diapers, white rooms, bed restraints, straitjackets, enema's, catheters, electro shock therapy, maybe if you're lucky a sadistic matron, looking to vent her perverse carnal desires.

Drink it my pretty, bawahahahahaha!!!!

Err.. I mean, I'm sure the controversy is all exaggerated.

Oh goodness, hun, I WORK at a starbucks.  I can't go a day without my coffee or I get grumpy.  I started working at starbucks because I'm so obsessed with coffee.  Don't try and stop it, it tastes good, it wakes people up, and its all-around wonderful.  Be proud of your coffee addiction!

lol, this post wasn't meant to ban caffiene. i'm not an alcohalic seeking to remove all temptation through prohabition. i was just looking to see if anyone had exp with the dt process.

(note to self; attempts to illiminate caffiene have been thwarted,,, on to refined sugar and preservitives)
((further notes; grammer faeries are closing in on me))

An interesting discussion, that's for sure.  I personally have never drunk soda and will never drink it.  The carbonation bothers my mouth and throat.  Plus I've never throught it could be good for me.

Coffee... I first started drinking that when I was in my early twenties.  I blame genetics class for forcing me to get up and try studying at 3am!  There have been times when I've drunk coffee heavily, but they never last.  Eventually I just naturally seem to reduce the amount that I take in.  For instance, I was drinking a whole pot by myself a few months ago, but now I may or may not have a cup.  I don't know why it works like that, but it does.  I don't seem to hold addictions for very long.

Interested in the original title and the OP's need to rid theirself of their habit,I read with interest.End of the first page,I needed to make another coffee, yes,I am addicted to caffiene too, since my early childhood when I even got it in my beaker.I don't sleep,I used too and was the proud holder of the golden blanket award in my family, but there was never time to sleep in this modern world, coffee I used to keep me awake and in large quantities.Time marched on,and then I didn't sleep, yet my coffee intake was still scary, mind,I am now at least on half caff, and I no longer do the Swedish style coffee with two heaped spoons of the lovely substance in a cup.Now I sleep again, sometimes for eleven hours, but I am still on the coffee,it is the only thing that stops the persistent yawning.I know it is bad for me,like every other stimulant or anything that makes us feel good, but why do we need stimulants.

What is addiction, really, where caffeine is concerned?  When I started driving 40 miles roundtrip every few months to buy 12-15 pounds of coffee, I figured I was addicted.  It's a nice drive, really!  When my grinder broke last year, I bought two new ones (they were on sale!) so as to have a backup.  When my local DD closed, the memorial service was well-attended, so I know I'm not alone....

Really, I could give it up any time I wanted.

Any time I wanted people around me to begin looking like targets, that is.....

But there lies the choice.
If you assume that everyone has a limited number of heartbeats, do you suckle the evil brew, and burn through them faster?
Wringing more from now at the expense of your twilight years?

I have seen inside the living death of geriatric wards, I would rather drink instant coffee rather than outlive my body, mind and soul.
