Medically speaking, more than 4 cups of coffee a day is considered to be high consumption. That came as a shock to me! I started to cut down by first decreasing the strength of the coffee I was consuming, then gradually cutting out one cup at a time, starting with those at the end of the day. I now drink only two cups, not particularly strong, one mid morning, one mid afternoon. The funny thing is, I enjoy those two cups far more than the gallons I used to swill. I look forward to them, I savour them, and I appreciate them. My head aches are now rare, I sleep better, and I didn't suffer the "cold turkey" agony. I've managed to maintain that level of consumption for several years now, and it's one of those compromises that has really benefitted me.

I went cold turkey about six or eight months ago. No ill effects here. I also stopped drinking milk around the same time.

I have not actually quit either, I just have not had the desire for them. That is my change, and thuis is a permanent change, which is required for any addict to beat an addiction. And I mean it in spades, you have to be able to watch someone drink a soda and eat some really bad food and say no if they offer any. Just like hard drugs, I have no problem turning it down, and I mean for free. I would never pay for it, unless we are talking a pittance for a really lot of it.

I know people who drink alcohol all day, and I know peope who drink caffiene all day. They are both natural substances. If you decide to say no to either or both good. Smoking is a good example, like last time I was in jail. The reason I decided never to go back is because in our local lockup you can't smoke. But I can't reveal a weakness by begging or bumming for cigarettes. I was taught not to show weakness, and to never ask anyone for anything. I can't say I never asked anyone for anything, but I have never begged for anything.

In the words of The Godz "there's money junkies, sex junkies, dope junkies, booze junkies". I would add there are sugar junkies, table salt junkies, soda junkies, TV junkies. Even internet junkies.

I remember being young and not drinking coffee, and I also remember alot of kids, me included who were not allowed to drink coffee until a certain age. Why ? Do we need a Caffienaholics Anonymous like AA ? Of course that would take a major redesign on the twelve step program.

Be well.

Caffeine is the most commonly used addictive substance in the world. And has been for over a thousand years.

It is used in headache relief, why else would it be in Excedrin and the others? Unfortunately going cold turkey will give you headaches also.

The best way to cut down on coffee is to mix one can of regular with one can of decaf and drink your normal amount. After a few weeks you could start with two decafs to one regular. Same thing for coke or pepsi, except alternate one can regular to one can decaf.

Mountain Dew is tricky because there is no decaf version. Switch to regular cola and then start adding in the occasional decaf.

Myself, it was iced tea. Used to drink half a gallon daily, when I decided to stop the headaches were nasty. Started making it with equal amounts of tea bags, regular and decaf.

I am addicted to caffiene, but I am cutting back for health reasons.
I am finding that green tea is a nice substitute.

Hi, my name is Mama and I am a coffee-holic.  Oops, wrong room.

I don't drink regular coffee.  Nope, not for me.  I'm from the deep south so I like my chicory-coffee.  Nice and dark and rich and aromatic and can stand a spoon in it!!!  Add a few packets of artificial sweetener and a half cup of creamer and there ya go~~~  my daily dose (2 pots a day) of wicked pleasure!!!!

I also drink a couple diet sodas a day and smoke almost 2 packs of cigs a day.  I rarely drink alcohol and don't do any illegal drugs.  Yeah, I'm not a health concience person.  I know that some of my actions will surely kill me.  But, like another poster said-- I ain't getting out of this place alive anyway.  Gonna keep on with my pleasures and skip the headaches.

I've been perfectly well aware of my addiction since high school. On the up side, it's legal at any age and cheaper than most other vices.

I am reading this right before I go prepare my favorite coffee blend.
I enjoy my coffee, but I try to limit myself to no more than 2 cups daily.
I also enjoy hot or cold green tea.
I don't think many people realize how many products besides coffee, have a
significant amount of caffiene in them.

MamaDomme, I love your screen name.
2 pots of coffee a day! I am surprised you have time to sit down.
I have never had chicory-coffee, I would love to try it.

Thank you LadyIce.  I work 13 hour shifts so I start my morning with a pot of coffee and then drink about a half pot during work and another half pot at night before going to bed and sleeping soundly.

Coffee with chicory comes from New Orleans....... Cafe DuMonde, Luzianne, French Market and Community are some of the more popular brands.  There is one store about 40 miles from me that carries one of the brands, and I stock up every time I go to that town.  I sometimes order online some of the others.  Regular coffee just tastes bland and bitter after growing up on coffee with chicory!

Thanks for the tip, I am keeping my eye out for it when I buy coffee.
I may look around for chicory online.

OMG YESSS!!! French Market Coffee with Chickory........my addiction.

Cafe Au Lait.... fill the mug between 1/3 and 1/2 with steamed whole milk and the rest up with the wonderful thick dark rich goodness.....pure heaven. Also, using a french press is the best way I have found to make it. Or cold press which is just awsome too.

Regular coffee is like coloured water.

I have to totally agree with you there.  I am not a coffee drinker really but about a year and a half ago, I had the chance to go to Cafe duMonde in New Orleans and have the delicious Cafe Au Lait of which you speak (not to mention those heavenly beignets!)  Even as someone who doesn't generally like coffee, I have to admit it was amazing.  I mean, who can resist a cup of coffee that's half milk?  That's definitely how I prefer mine.........luci

Yes, and the funny thing is that always before, with regular coffee, I preferred it straight up black with nothing at all added.

If not for the advise of a beautiful woman I would have never even gone to Cafe Du Monde.

I went because I adore James Lee Burke's series of books about Cajun detective Dave Robicheaux.  The setting is in New Iberia, LA but he's always going to New Orleans as well. In the books, the main characters are always drinking Cafe Au Lait and eating beignets at Cafe DuMonde.  I made the pilgrimage to New Iberia and New Orleans and I made sure the Cafe and the French Market were stops.  I loved every second it it......luci

Combining BDSM and Caffeine..?

Yeah I can do that..
I'll require a sturdy cage, a caffeine addicted cutie wanting to quit, a pot of fresh brew just out a reach. A fan to blow the coffee scent into the cage, and the room to be sound proofed for when the screaming and begging starts...

What's the male term for a Caffeinatrix?

D Hint: Add the cream and sugar to the coffee before it goes into the enema tube..

*LOL!* You almost make me wish I was addicted to it! But I'm not. My parents wouldn't let us have any caffeinated beverages (Coke, Pepsi, & definitely not coffee) when we were young and by the time I was old enough to drink coffee, I didn't see the point.

Green tea contains caffeine. Not as much per your average brewed cup as coffee, but it's still there.
