DeviantlyD -> Where would you travel to? (6/12/2007 1:59:38 AM)

Aloha!

I already live in one of the world's most popular tourist destination spots! But I have wanderlust in my blood, so I'm trying to figure out where to travel to for my upcoming vacation time. I am wondering what recommendations fellow CM members might have for me. I'll be on a significant budget and packing my camera in order to take LOTS of scenic photos. I'm looking at no more than about a week as my remaining time will be spent visiting with family back home. Also, I'm travelling solo.

But I like hearing about anyone's travel experiences, whether they are ones I can afford or not. So, aside from possibly offering suggestions, do you have any good travel experiences to relate?

My current wish list includes Ireland, India, Japan, Australia, African safari....well...to be honest, pretty much everywhere!

The best vacation spot I ever went to in my entire life was Breckenridge, CO.  I used to go there every summer with my family.  It's a mountain town/resort destination and has the most fantastic hiking areas I have ever seen.

Germany, Scotland, Ireland, England, Italy, Spain, Canada. I've always wanted to go to Morocco for some reason as well.

Japan is a fantastic place, especially if you haven't been before. With just a week I would travel along the old postal highway along which is Tsumago http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsumago,_Nagano . If you like an active vacation I would hike along the route and dtay at ryokans, traditional type inns which you will find along the route. When I walked the route I met many Japanese staying at the inns where the evening meal is usually communal so there is plenty of opportunity to socialize with Japanese people. You certainly won't be disappointed.

I am soooo envious.. a Thelma and Louise sort of thing (minus the gun), I will have to do this just once in my life.

I haven't been anywhere other than back home for a while.  I have to say though that travelling down in the southern states is probably one of my favorite things.  I love to take the back roads and just soak up the scenery.

Congrats on your wedding SleazyB!

Central Europe is the best for architechture - Prague especially. Vienna is good too, but too much traffic and too many people.

Iceland is a place I want to go - lie at night in the blue lagoon's heated volcanic water, watching the northern lights overhead.

Australia and NZ are apparently wonderful too.

And I really quite fancy the old towns of the Carolinas and Virginia for some reason too.

If you're going to Japan, there's lots of nice shrines to visit.

And, of course, the inimitable Miho Museum.

Some nice looking places:

Kuki bay, Kumano Taisha shrine, etc.
Takeda Shingen shrine, Matsumoto castle, etc.

Well, being retired military and having been to 40-50 different countries I think Ireland is hands down the most beautiful.
My grandparents paternally came from Donegal and I have dual American/Irish Citizenship.
As they say no more that two days in Dublin and The West is the Best.
I thought that Bunglas the highest seacliffs in Europe in Donegal was absolutely stunning (1972 ft) (forget the Cliffs of Moher) and then there's Mayo and Galway.
And August is the best time to go because they have a lot of music festivals (Look up Ballyshannon Folk Festival) the people are very friendly, the B&Bs cost about $30 a night with full Irish breakfast then in Ballyshannon you can go horsebackriding on the beach.
From Boston round trip it's about $670 on Aer Lingus.

Couldn't agree more. Beautiful county with lovely people. Of course being a Cardigan girl myself I would be biased towards South Wales.

My best holiday was a bit of a road trip too. All round the western US. Loads of National Parks with so many memories such as the beautiful Bryce Canyon, the blackest of black nothing at midnight in the Grand Canyon followed by the brightest lights in Vegas and swimming under the stars in the pool in Death Valley.

I lived and worked in Egypt which is a country so full of history it should be on everyones list.

As far as Europe goes there is so much to see. Switzerland is beautiful as is Germany. I love Brugges in Belgium or "the Venice of the North" as it is often called.

Next on my wish list is India, Prague, Nashville and the surrounding area and Iceland.

So much to see and so little time.

Been there, done that.

Would love to go again, but it is behind a few places I have not been.

Places I have been are most of Western Europe (lived there), Canada, Mexico, and all over the US.

When I get elevated in my union and can work in any port on the West Coast (including Alaska) I will be heading north for a few months to work in all these places.
