ORIGINAL: popeye1250 Lmao at "L.D." "Learning Disabled." We used to call that,........."Stupid." Wow. Just... wow. I was in graduate school for a while to get a teaching credential for special education with emphasis on neurological disorders. Two classic examples of a learning disorder are hypoattentive and hyperattentive. To look at an individual who has one of these things, one sees a child that is easily distracted, unable to focus, tends to be a poor performer, unable to pay attention, may end up acting out, etc. So people scream at this child to pay attention, try harder, etc. A child that is hypoattentive is unable to focus, easily distracted, tends to be a poor performer, and is unable to pay attention. Teaching this child how to focus and pay attention is a wonderful thing. A child that is hyperattentive is unable to focus BECAUSE they pay attention to EVERYTHING. They lack a filtering mechanism in their brain to sort out what is important to pay attention to. Telling this child to pay attention and try harder messes them up and prevents them from learning. Calling a learning disabled "stupid," popeye, is simply ignorant and almost abusive. The fact that everybody thought the sun revolved around the earth in the 1200s does not mean they were stupid, simply ignorant. The fact that slow learners in the 1950s were called stupid does not mean they were so, science had simply not caught up with what was going on in their cognitive processes. Sinergy
