Hi,
I would like to know if talking about DID (dissociative identity disorder) is not an appropriate topic to discuss in the chat room? I have it and I was hoping that I would be able to just include that topic in amongst the other exciting topics going on like politics.

I was hoping that I would be able to talk with someone else who has it, so I could see what having DID is like for them, to learn something or just to compare what it's like for me.

Anytime I mention it, it seems that everyone clams up, or has a bad reaction.... I know that the cause of DID would make some feel uncomfortable, but I only want to talk about inner worlds and alters, not the cause.....

I'm wondering if perhaps this is just something that is "not discussed" the same as it is in the real world.... bummer... I've tried finding chat rooms that are for DID people but have only found message boards and many there allow their littles to play on the boards, so it makes navigating very difficult.....

So..... I'm asking a Dom... should I just give up & look for a DID chat room? Or what? Any suggestions? I like it here and I don't want to go somewhere else, but I'd still like to talk about alters without everyone freezing up and changing the subject.

Thank you to anyone who responds. respectfully yours, zaynab

I don't think many people would know what DID is (I sure don't). That could be why they seem a bit taken aback or uncomfortable when you bring it up. I think most people in the chat rooms are looking to have fun, so bringing that up may seem like a downer. I would suggest letting people get to know you better before bringing up this subject. They would probably be more receptive and interested. Good luck.

I think it would depend on why you are bringing it up in a chat room - if you wanted to discover how commen it might be on say, a forum board like here - then I would think that you would get good responses - but in a general chat room might be a bit too much for some people, as the chat is usually somewhere people try to relaz. If it comes up in conversation - I would say, go with the flow - but trying to discuss such a difficult and little understood disorder with people who may be just trying to 'escape reality' or meet people in a friendly atmosphere might be awkward.

You could always try and open a post on a forum and see who responds. But my question would be - what exactly are you in search of by discussing this subject?

Peace and Love

Thank you for your nice responses.... *smile

The reason I brought it up in the first place was because several people were discussing something about people with compromising conditions (i would not call this a disablity, per se) needing financial aid with their medical coverage or something like that.

I wanted to share in public (where everyone could read it) that the way that I applied for my SSI gave me instant approval. I thought that if someone was reading that, and wanted more information, they could send me a message to ask me how i did that.

One person did do that and I did share this with them, I hope that it helped them in their tough situation.

I was just surprised that everyone got so wierded out by me bringing it up.
I wonder if I give a similiar reaction when they are discussing politics for 1 1/2 hours at a time, if they will change to using a message board instead of the public chat room lol.

It also would nice to chat with another person with DID so I can ask them about their inner world and alters, and share info about mine.

I can see now where throwing this out in public was not the best of ways to go about this.... but I took it at face value when a chatter, "sure you can ask us whatever you like, after all everyone talks about being Doms in here and bsdm topics, i'm sure they can handle it and if not, we'll just ignore you." lol

Thanks again, friends......... ~ zaynab[MD] *smile

Anything can and is brought up in chat rooms, you just have to have the right timing and crowd for it.

DID is actually more common in the scene than people think, it's very common with the "need to please" types.

If you want to bring it up here, try the other forums.

oh, wanted to add that I've also heard alters being called "alter egos" before, so maybe this is the term that it is known by on this site. *shrugging shoulders ~ z

I am not trying to be sarcastic here so please bear with me.

You are at a party. Everyone is laughing and talking about politics, work, sports things of common interests. Someone joins the party and begins to talk about Quantum Physics. No one understands anything about Quantum Physics so, the topic falls to the floor like a wet towel. Was the subject appropriate? Sure it was. Was it a viable topic based on common knowledge where everyone else could chime in and add to the discussion? Probably not.

I have never heard of DID until your post. I am making the assumption that it is categorized as a mental illness although I am willing to accept that I am wrong in thinking so. If it is a mental illness then I am shocked that you cannot find a chat room on the Internet that would know nothing about it. Try one of those types of chat rooms. I looked on About.com and they have one on there specifically for DID.

Note: After writing this I did a search on the net for DID and found out that it is also known as multiple personality disorder.

I think it is an appropriate topic. Also, I'd like to suggest the SMART Recovery site. It has a very broad scope and does have chat.

Also...I have a personal interest in this disorder, so if you would like to email me here (with your Master's consent, of course), I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Bob

Thanks for taking the time to find that for me Gauge, the problem i had found in chat rooms for multiples, is that there are a lot of "littles" that are allowed to play on there so that it is very hard to communicate.

It would be the same as a hundred 2 year olds typing garbled text on all the message boards here.

One message board appearred to be frequented by a fair number of people but soon I noticed that all of them knew eachother quite well, then discovered that every single person messaging in that board was from the same host (one person).

When I politley questioned that, the person locked me out of the site. lol

I do appreciate your inquiries on my behalf, though and will take time to go to the link that you have provided and see what's there.

as for it being a 'mental illness', who knows? All of the 'sane' people i know and meet are
so messed up..... they make me seem 100% perfect.
Walt Disney had multiples, by the way..... thanks again, ~ zaynab

Thank you, Desert Rat Sir,
I would love to do that and I will ask him. I'm not looking for recovery, I've been going to a therapist for this for the past 2+ years and have decided that integrating is definitely NOT for me (us), my alters are wayyyy to wonderful for me to give up even one of them, and they are not interested in integrating either.

I'm just so curious to talk with someone about what their inner world is like, it is so fascinating and fun, and alters, although being very 'specific' are also fun each their own 'specific' kind of way.... if you know what i mean *smile ~ zaynab

Why don't you try a web search for a forum and/or chat room dedicated to DID? My guess is Yahoo and MSN have some and maybe even AOL.

Well, Yahoo probably would if they hadn't closed all the user rooms. There are rooms for discussing other mental health disorders, but nothing on DID.

Zaynab, i just wanted to say i am in awe of you, suffering (is this the proper word?) from a disorder of this nature and still being so upbeat and personable. Next time i get all full of sadness and worry, i am going to remind myself that the quality of one's life is determined by one's strength, not one's circumstances. Thank you.

I am sorry but I am the same as Gauge. When I first read DID I was thinking it was something to do with Bdsm.

I did some searching for you and found this.

http://bipolar.about.com/cs/menu_chat/a/chatguide_vets.htm

There is adult chat rooms there and sex and other chatrooms. Not too sure if this is what you are after but hope it helps

DID is very complex, and often associated with the "people pleasing" types who find it extremely difficult to show anything BUT happiness and desire to help out, in fact have often created their alter personalities to help deal with the darker issues/experiences that they can't experience straight on. It's a very advanced coping mechanism. This can be one of the hardest parts in helping the situation.

But I'm glad that there's something being open about it. A lot of people on lists are quick to admit rape or abuse, but long term personality or neurological disorders take a lot more courage.

I have been a part of an online survivor community with a large DID component (several of whom were in the scene), although it sadly disbanded. I do maintain contact with some of the people on the list though. Feel free to write to me privately if you wish, and I will see whether I can scout out any further resources (it would take some digging).

I've been following these threads but haven't written anything because I don't know jackshit about DID.

But comments like this one make me wonder whether you're serious. You're going to let your alters talk to each other? How exactly does that work? How are you going to know about the conversations afterwards--do the alters keep a written record? And what happens if things get out of hand and your alters do destructive things? I assume you're not in control while your alter is talking, right?
