Jon-Erik Hexum

Hexum died after shooting himself in the head with a prop gun loaded with blanks on the set of the CBS series Cover Up, a program about a pair of fashion photographers/models who were actually secret agents. Hexum, who played a weapons expert, was said to constantly be playing with the guns as if they were toys and once angered Jennifer O'Neill so much that she chastised him on-set for his carelessness.[6]
On October 12, 1984, after finishing a scene in which he fired several blank rounds from a .44 Magnum revolver, Hexum's character was supposed to unload the gun and reload it with inert dummy rounds, which was required for the next scene in the script—a procedure that Jon-Erik was not familiar with, and which was usually done by the prop masters. The shooting of the next scene was delayed several times. While waiting for the prop masters to unload the blanks from the gun, Hexum jokingly put the gun up to his temple and allegedly said,

"Let's see if I get myself with this one."
Hexum apparently did not realize that blanks use paper or plastic wadding to seal gun powder into the shell, and that this wadding is propelled out of the barrel of the gun with enough force to cause severe injury or death if the weapon is fired at point-blank range, especially if pointed at a particularly vulnerable spot, such as the temple or the eye. Although the paper wadding in the blank that Hexum discharged did not penetrate his skull,[7] the wad struck him in the temple with enough blunt force trauma to shatter a quarter-sized piece of his skull and propel the pieces into his brain.

Just becasue an clip is out does not mean the gun is clear and safe.

Yes i don't think a gun should ever be treated as safe. The first time i held a gun i had to fire blanks for a stage show. All precautions were taken, theorectically no one was going to get hurt but it left me feeling shakey and not quite right for a while. I wish everyone viewed guns this way.

You can be killed with a blank actually. The name slips my memory but a famous actor from older days pulled a stunt for his friends and pressed a gun loaded with blanks to his temple and pulled the trigger. The air pressure (I believe that was what it was) killed him. Even blanks are not toys.

Yeah and that's why i was so nervous. I mean no one was going to get hurt using it how i did but I treated like a loaded firearm at all times, always pointed at the ground, locked away except when i was using it and i was the only one allowed to touch it. i was still glad to be done with that show though.....

I AM DOING THIS IN CAPS TO MAKE A POINT.

Well, no, but I can't stress this enough. Guns are not toys, they are killing machines. For one, don't ever be without one, and for two, don't ever pull it out without using it.

And if the weapon was chambered before the clip was removesd, it is still loaded.

And certain automatics and whatever else drop the hammer when you engage the safety, which will fire the round

All of this is bullshit, the fact of the matter is YOU NEVER PLAY WITH A KILLING MACHINE. Not even a little bit.

Imagine if you hit the safety on your S&W but even had it pointed down. It discharged the round and it went through the floor. If you live in an apartment, this could be very bad.

Can you imagine being responsible for the death of someone you don't even know ? . Or even their dog or cat. It is wrong. KILLING MACHINES require special safety and handling procedures, and if you have one, it is up to you to never misuse it.

Need I say more ?

Let's let off the Brady bunch Kool Aid with this killing machines bullshit, shall we? Guns are tools and in SOME instances, can even be considered "toys" for adults. The point is they have potentially fatal consequences if mishandled. I am sure some idiots could come up with car play... placing the skull beneath the tire and getting a sexual thrill as the other revs in neutral and even "expertly" backs off the clutch. Same goes for placing a hand along side a moving ban saw.

People get a rush off the danger, but when the rush needs to be pursued to the point that lives and limbs are endangered, the person needs some serious examination, before Darwin speaks on the matter.

As to the reference about dogs as such "mahines", I agree with the sentiments. Dogs are dangerous hazards that operate under their own will and judgment, and it is imperative that Breed X be owned and handled by the right person with the right factors to accomodate it.

Fast Reply

When one uses this function, their response shows up under the last person who posted and, unfortunately, also includes the line: ' In reply to: xxx ' whether or not it actually was in reply to anybody in particular.  Personally, some people are just loose canons and should't have much attention paid to them, anyway!

Hugs,
Beverly

That's what I figured, it just didn't seem timed right to be a fast reply. I must be up too late - I'm overthinking things.

i'm pretty sure "fatal consequences" are the purpose of guns.  they're weapons designed to maim and kill.  calling them tools is perhaps a lovely euphemism but misleading at best.  while other tools may be used to kill (hammers, knives, cars, etc.), they are designed for and actually have other uses.  guns, however, have no other purpose but maiming and killing.  even if they are a "tool" of protection, they only serve as such because of the threat they pose to the life of the other. as such, they should always be treated as weapons created to kill because that's what they are...to say otherwise is irresponsible.

To the person above who gave instructions on how to know if a gun is loaded or not:

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN UNLOADED GUN.

No one has ever been accidentally fucking killed by a loaded gun, I promise you.

Hello  After reading all the replies to the original post I am still amazed that some do not get it.

A GUN WAS DESIGNED TO KILL and SHOULD ALWAYS BE CONSIDERED AS LOADED. NOTHING involving a gun is a accident becasue if handled properly and stored safely there would never be a casue to say it happened by accident. SORRY but that is cold hard fact.

There are some things you do not do.  Playing with guns is one of them.  Stealing is another one.  Another thing is breath play.   Breath play is just as dangerous and gun play.  This is the first time I have ever heard of anything to do with guns used in a bdsm scene.  Knife play will get you in trouble.  So will casteration.
Everything in moderation.

Regards, MissSCD

I have a totally hot rape fantasy that involves being held against my will at gun point.  And I haven't done it because I can't bring myself to break the core belief to treat guns as if they were always loaded.  I just can't.  I can't even point an unloaded gun, that I cleared and secured, that hasn't left my hand, at myself in the privacy of my own home.

And even though I'd like to be dismissive that someone died because of a foolish decision, I find the idea of anyone dying while doing WIITWD tragic.

And in response to some of the previous posts - Killing machines?  Really?  Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but a gun in and of itself NEVER killed anyone.  People are killed by either intent or mistake on the part of a gun operator, not the gun itself.

The only way I will ever play with guns is if they're squirt guns.
