Rewriting v Revising v Workshopping: I'm a big fan of revision. But only in certain ways and for certain reasons. My "poet cred" comes pretty much from being part of Free Peoples' Poetry Workshop and Writers' Center of Indiana. Made getting published on a local level much much easier. I can say that having Etheridge Knight and Yusef Komunyakaa rip my shit a new one really strengthened my work when I implemented their ideas. I wound up killing the poems in question, but I learned from them... That, and having the privilege of having an Allen Ginsberg story (I got to be his chauffeur on one of his last trips to Indy), getting drunk with Rita Dove and having her compliment my makeup, and having the joy of knowing Julia Strange "before she was famous"... well worth the masochism involved in workshopping with those cats.
