"The true master is the one who needs no method. The journeyman refers to methods and systems and slowly develops his own. The apprentice merely copies what others have shown him." attributed to Leonardo DaVinci

What are the immediate indications that one would be communicating with a true Dom?

There is no such creature. What is "true" to one person, is fluff to another. A better question is  if a person is compatible with your view of what you want in a Dom, and how to screen their intentions.

What is the definitive nature of a Dom?

A myth! I would say, to be dominant, but not all Dom's are dominant by nature, they simply choose to be in certain situations.
quote:

Does a Dom ever have trouble communicating their truth?

No, of course not, because a true Dom knows The One Truth, which is that their word is law. Duh. [:-]

Of course a Dom may sometimes have trouble communicating, they're human, aren't they?
quote:

If a sub asks a direct question should they expect a direct answer?

They can certainly hope. Can anyone expect anything? I don't think so, though I think given time and learning someone's modus operandi, you may be able to come to expect or at least predict how the person being questioned may react.

It is easy to spot a "True" Master.

They will tell you in their profiles that they are "True" Masters.

If you want to buy swamp land in Florida, let me know.

I doubt he had bdsm in mind when he said that.

But I still think it fits better than anything else in this thread regarding mastery in practice.

lilsweety -> RE: How to tell a true Master? (9/3/2007 9:33:46 PM)

I know of a "true Dom" and he has taught me a few things to keep an eye out for.

A true Dom NEVER loses control of the situation or himself.  It is a responsibility that he takes on and takes seriously.  It is his job to protect his sub even as he is pushing their limits. (I only use "He" as I am a female sub)

A true Dom is not threatened by his subs success but rather sees it as a sign that his training is allowing his sub to flourish in her role not only in her submissive world but the vanilla world as well.

A true Dom places value on the gift of a sub and protects that gift...not only from the outside world...but from some self-destructive tendencies that can arise.

Similar to the Doms control of a situation, a true Dom stringently controls himself and his own reactions.  If you can't control yourself, how can you control anything else.

From there, it is mostly compatibility.  There are true Doms who are into hard core edge play and some who simply want the mental control.  It is simply finding your flavor.

Lastly, though, a true Dom knows that the capital "D" in Dom is earned and not simply given.

Others may disagree with my assessment, but these guidelines have helped me weed out quite a number of scary pretenders and haters.  Hope it helps you too.  Play safe.

Greetings

I wish this was so. But there are some situations even the most domly of doms cannot control.

A slave sick with cancer, for one.

Be very careful that one does not place another on a pedestal so high only the Gods could keep him there.

I liked the rest of what you've said. But this particular qualification a master cannot always meet, and that is no hit against his domliness, his honour or his intentions.

It is just a fact of being human and not a god.

There's no such thing, it's a myth. We're all different. It's true some may be more outwardly dominant than others but there are vanillas who act like that too.

Don't get hung up on that image-find the one who works for -you-.

Happy hunting.

Another quote from the art world, "Expertise and Mastery: an expert, like an Aristotelian phronimos, does the right thing at the right time and in the right way (and will be immediately recognized by his or her community as having done so); but a true master inaugurates a new discursive practice, often transforming the old standards of success in the process and so requiring more time to be recognized."

Of course art and M/s are different, but I think there is some correlation.

RRafe -> RE: How to tell a true Master? (9/4/2007 6:33:14 AM)

I really think it boils down to "Is good at what they do"

Which makes about 85% who give themselves the title liars. [:D]

And which is why that crowd generates so much laughter.

lilsweety -> RE: How to tell a true Master? (9/4/2007 4:21:26 PM)

Of course there are things even the best Dom can't control...time and space for example.

lilsweety -> RE: How to tell a true Master? (9/4/2007 4:27:41 PM)

sorry...hit the enter button too soon...OK...so i am not a Dom...i can't even control my typing.  :)  Anyway, to finish my thought...of course a Dom can't control everything...BUT...he should remain in control of himself and his actions.  A true Dom doesn't hit because he can't control his anger.  A sub needs to be assured that punishment or discipline is for a purpose...not just reactionary.

When the really scary stuff comes up...like cancer, etc...I need to know that my Dom will always take those things into consideration and care for my needs in the best and safest way possible.  Keeping control of the other aspects around Him make the scarier things able to be coped with.

Am I even making sense.  sometimes the heart of a sub is raw emotion and it can be difficult to explain what it feels in a coherent manner.

My old joke is that you aren't a "true" anything until you've been told by at least five people that you are NOT a "true" one.

Every person you would label as "true" another dozen would label as a useless pathetic asshole.  Every person you would label as a useless pathetic asshole has at least a dozen people who adore them.

Lmao, I love that. Can I use it as My signature?.

I've seen that happen once or twice [;)]

Yes Ma'am, you are making sense. A dom/master should certainly have control over how he behaves.
