OsideGirl -> RE: Do you feel ovulation when it happens? (9/30/2007 10:29:51 AM)

I get pain from the right ovary. I also have Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome and the right overy has had a couple of really large cysts. I'll get a sharp pain when I stand up quick and just a general ache in the area.

leatherette -> RE: Do you feel ovulation when it happens? (9/30/2007 1:51:55 PM)

Wow!  So many experience this!  Just think how many of the very few right here, such a small subset of the world - have painful ovulation = "Mittellsmertz".

I get it every damn month.  I've had every test.  Nothing "wrong". Normal ovulation can just damn hurt.  The left ovary hurts the most . Unbelievable.
Get sick to my stomach.  Hurts like [>:] !

Good thing about it, like so many say : super duper horny, cycle so regular..no guess work involved, no doubt. Wish B.C. pills didn't make me sick, no other option.

Thanks for bringing up the topic and love to you all!

I believe I do experience some very minor changes, but only ones that I notice myself such as increased sex drive and becoming more wet. Humans are one of the few species on the planet that have "Hidden ovulation" Meaning that when a woman ovulates (Not period, it's the release of a an egg ) they display no direct physical sign. While 90% of other animals display very clear signs known as "Heat" Humans ( Sadly XD ) do not experience heat, as in female lions and dogs where bleeding is actually a sign of being fertile.

here is the wiki quote:
"Unlike almost all other species, the external physical changes of a human female near ovulation are very subtle. A woman may sense her own ovulation while it may remain indiscernible to others; this is considered to have sociobiological significance. In contrast, other species often signal receptivity through heat, swellings, and/or changes in color in the genital area. Humans are the only mammal to have hidden ovulation, although some argue that the extended estrus period of the bonobo (reproductive-age females are in heat for 75% of their menstrual cycle)[14] has a similar effect to the lack of a "heat" in human females."

Not precisely true, SSRIs control estrogen output to a degree. Went on Zoloft some years back for depression and it eliminated the hot flashes and night sweats. Mentioned it to psychiatrist and he verified it.

Not sure of what dosage would be required though, but your ob/gyn would be the person to ask. And if they aren't aware of this, ask them to research it and tell them you'll call them Friday five minutes before their first appointment of the day to get the information. Call receptionist first thing day before and remind her of the research the doctor promised to do so she can remind the doc.

[:)] Thank you Celeste! You are great! Your suggestion is a good one and appreciated.
This is all so personal, but if it helps anyone out there, I don't mind sharing. PMs are welcome, too.

Let's see. I don't get hot flashes, sweats, PMS or troubled periods. Had hormone levels tested and am not in perimenopause. Knock on wood, I don't suffer depression. ( Hugs to any who do).

Yes - S.S.R.I.s have so many uses, like you said. Interesting about estrogen, I didn't know that. Thanks.

SSRIs are now given for pain management, as medical research ever evolves. I have been given Zoloft, and other antidepressants in the past in hope of reducing the stabbing ovulation pain and upset digestive system that last a few days a month. It is aggravating. ( See my post above - all those grimacing faces - had the pain right then).

The serotonin thing doesn't seem to be it. Those pills: make me sleepless, jumpy and don't even help the pain. No use for me. Very happy to learn they have helped you and others.

I kept trying different brands of birth control pills in order to halt ovulation. The side effects ( of those and antidepressants) render me worse off than anything.  So, no meds for me!
Since there is nothing visably wrong - nothing out of working order - no harder treatment has been recomended. I did get a few different doctors opinions. Pain control for those 3 days - is the best and most logical medical solution as of now.

The method that is best for me - doesn't cure, but reduces recovery time ( had it down to one day!) is natural health.
Clean food, leafy greens, water, herbs, excercise.. all those goodies but peskies to keep in optimal health has been the by far the best. ( I did go to a professional for advice)  Besides: great for everything!   Reduces a woman's estrogen too... you seem to be onto something there :)

Everyone should hear what you said about being proactive in medical care and health. I always am. I do my own research, keep up on what medical science is working on in this zone and - I don't give up. I am fortunate I suffer from an annoying pain and not something that can progress or is lethal.

Blessings to all!
love, leatherette

No, most of the time females cannot feel ovulation.  Most everyone in this thread appears to be talking about when they menstrate and get cramps.  That is not ovulation.
People are even referring to both ovaries ovulating...while that is not what is happening either.
We have a dominant ovary which does the ovulation for most of our life.  Whether it be the left or right one.

Um, I'm pretty sure every woman on the planet is aware of the difference between cramping during menstrual discharge and cramping at other times during her cycle.  I am one of the women who absolutely does have symptoms two weeks before my period.  The symptoms are exactly those described by other women on this thread....cramping on one side, which usually alternates each month, but feels worse on one particular side (in my case, the right side).  This cramping is in a very different area than menstrual cramping, and it's a different kind of pain.   It can drive me to double over as I've seen described by others here.  It starts off in one small spot, but it sort of moves until it hurts to have a bowel movement.  Two weeks from this date, my period will start.  So, no...it's not menstrual cramping, and yes, it must be part of the whole cycle or it wouldn't happen every month and it wouldn't coincide with my period.  I don't care what medical professionals say....there is still a vast gap in medical knowledge of female body.  It wasn't too long ago that women were diagnosed with "hysteria" and male doctors would masturbate them to relieve the condition.

Also...I agree that there is a dominant ovary, but it is clearly not true that only one functions.  Maybe one functions better...maybe only one actually releases an egg, which might explain why there is more pain when it's my right ovary....What I learned way back in high school was that the ovaries take turns each month releasing an egg.  Don't know if that's still the current belief, but it certainly seems to be true in my case.

MadameDahlia -> RE: Do you feel ovulation when it happens? (12/8/2007 2:39:41 AM)

I've only felt it once... and once was one time too man. I was in the same room as my mother. One moment I was standing up, looking at her. The next minute I was on the floor... not knowing how I'd gotten there or why I felt so much pain in one side. She said I'd gone completely white... and still looked very pale. I explained that I was feeling so much pain that I didn't want to so much as breathe because moving was excruciating. She thought my appendix had burst or something dramatic like that.

Just in case it was something that urgent she and I headed off to the hospital. While waiting to be seen, the pain lessened... finally going away. When we finally got in to see the doctor we both talked about what had happened. He explained that it sounded like mittelschmerz. Then he told us what it was and that I could likely expect to start my period in a handful of days.

I'd like to stop having my cycle altogether and have started taking birth control pills to prune it back to four times a year. Without the pill I end up having periods that last at least seven days. The first two to three of which I experience cramping. Starts off light. Progresses to a level where I'm curled up on the floor in the fetal position, hoping to be struck by lightning. I went on the pill only when I reached the pain level that required a Vicodin and a half to be able to sleep through the night.

ageofhysteria -> RE: Do you feel ovulation when it happens? (12/20/2007 1:04:29 PM)

I have ovarian cysts and it feels terrible when I ovulate. It's actually put me in the ER once or twice. [sm=whoa.gif]

calicowgirl -> RE: Do you feel ovulation when it happens? (12/20/2007 9:48:33 PM)

I know when I ovulate as well and for me it is always my right side. I suffered years of endometriosis and was finally treated by a great doctor and have had no active endo for about six years now. I had a hysterectomy but kept both ovaries then due to cysts and adhesions lost the right tube a couple of years later. The adhesions and cysts always seem to return and I surely notice it when I ovulate.

Tantriqu -> RE: Do you feel ovulation when it happens? (12/20/2007 9:59:18 PM)

Agree, fabulous increase in sex drive and lubrication in the week/10 days before, and thinking about orgasms every 7 minutes, then sharp spearing pain for 1-3 days, even worse with movement, during ovulation, some months worse than others, but at least usually it's an excellent predictor of the period itself 12-16 days later, usually the latter.  Some months the libido drops in frequency, sometimes it doesn't :-)
Then as the uterus fills, Superior sexual positions become uncomfortable.  Then more pain with the period, then the drive goes up, then allll over again.
It's a pain worse than a just-stubbed toe, but like childbirth, it's pain with a purpose, and therefore much easier to bear.

PanthersMom -> RE: Do you feel ovulation when it happens? (12/21/2007 3:21:31 PM)

you're wrong.  many women do experience ovarian pain at ovulation and yes, the germans do call it mittleschmirtz, i've had it for 31 years.  and since i no longer have periods thanks to a hysterectomy, and lost my left ovary, i still get it on the right side.  that blows your theory that it's only cramps and periods straight to hell. do not speak of that which you have no direct knowledge and contradict those that do.

This is very interesting, smiles, I have questions sort of, is this why certain times of the month we bottom out or hit the uterus and is it what triggers the uncontroled throbing during sex? what it reminds me of is when a mare is I heat That is not ment to up set anyone its just the best way for me to describe it, thanks Rush

worththeeffort -> RE: Do you feel ovulation when it happens? (12/24/2007 1:14:02 PM)

Rush,
i'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but i've noticed that right after my period my cervix seems to be a lot lower than usual and a thrust that would normally result in a gentle bump feels like a slam that makes me wanna cry. i'm not sure if anyone else experiences this, but i'm sure if i do, someone else does lol. If these forums have taught me nothing else, it's that my body's not any wierder than anyone elses lol.

summerblossom -> RE: Do you feel ovulation when it happens? (12/30/2007 4:04:31 PM)

So many ladies here say they feel ovulation. I don't think I've ever felt my ovulation I just get really nasty PMS.

christine1 -> RE: Do you feel ovulation when it happens? (12/30/2007 8:25:48 PM)

yes i feel it but it's on my left side, it is unmistakable when it happens, and no it isn't the same as cramps.

Hormones do change the position of the internal organs.  But uncontrolled throbbing?  If you mean her vagina throbbing during/after orgasm, IMHO, that is not related to hormones but uhhhh, how freaking hot the orgasm(s) were.

And yes, in case you were gonna ask, there are different types of orgasms that each feel different, ranging from small and quick to every-inch-of-your-body-throbbing-hanging-from-the-ceiling-by-your-fingernails.

batshalom -> RE: Do you feel ovulation when it happens? (1/2/2008 4:10:00 AM)

Sometimes when I ovulate I have a pinching sensation in whichever ovary. I haven't timed it to see if it correlates with breast tenderness, general body aches, weepiness, or bitchiness, exceptional horniness or increased moisture, but it's probably pretty close since it's all related in a menstrual sorta way.
