Actually Kyra, I did miss her stating they are in Australia. Not having been there I don't know what the rules are about tipping. In the U.S.A. tips run about 15% for lunch or breakfast and 20% for dinner and yes I do judge people on how they treat those with less power than them, as well as those with more power than them.

In Europe I always leave the coins handed back as change. I was taught to do that on my first trip many, many years ago, that it would be rude and cheap to begrudge a server 63 cents change or whatever.. Do Australians not leave even the five cents on the table?

It is not expected that one will tip in Australia, but on occasion Australians do tip. I have waited on many Australians when I worked at a resort near Yosemite (there was a group called Kon-tiki that I waited on once a week that was nothing but Aussies). They sometimes tipped, but I think the reason they did was because they knew it was our custom.

I used to chat with a couple that had a restaurant/bar in Australia, and they told me that people tipped some times, and not others... so it is not an unheard of thing to tip, but it is not expected either.

Typically no. Employees here come under an award payrate. The amount you are paid by a company is determined by your age and the industry you work in... our waiting staff do not work for tips, they get paid the relatively the same if not more than the checkout chick at the supermarket, or the receptionist at the doctors. Do you tip her? Waiting staff do not live of their tips here, they make the same wage as everyone else.

I did tip when I visited the US because it's the custom to do so.

Hi, I didnt really want to post this but it is something that is bothering me alot. I found a great guy. We have so much in common and a great time together but I either have to pay for my own stuff or his too. I have always believed that the man should pay. I dont know why just have. I dont make much money and I have my son to raise too. I dont know why but it is such a big deal to me. I know he doesnt make much money but I dont either. I just feel he should pay at least sometimes. He should take me out. Am I crazy on this? Am I obsessing? If anyone agrees with me could you give me a suggestion on bringing it up to him? He needs to know I guess, how much it bothers me (once I verify Im not crazy)>
