Unfortunately, you are right. Managers of apartments have the right to say no to you based on your tats. They actually have the right to say no, except for the following:
Discrimination of sex, race, religion and handicapped. I am sure there are more, but my brain is fried at the moment.

Since Subbieonwheels makes a point about lawfully requiring things, (which I was unaware of) perhaps you might want to make sure you have a written copy of any of the legal requirements they have to abide by. If an apartment manager wants to act dumb, then you have al the information you need to educate them and if they disagree or argue, you can content with them as you would anyone else.

Yes, in fact I have some people from Independent Living coming to my sisters to go over the basics of living and how to make it easier (marking can goods ect..) I want them to wait til I have my own place, which should have been today, but the weather is ICE COLD and windy. Tucson is supposed to have SNOW!
Once I get settled, I will have the people from IL come and help me there.

Your advice is great and I will remember that. However according to the information I got regarding service animals, they are considered occupants, and as such I am not required to pay a "pet" deposit. I understand your reasoning, as these dogs are animals. But they are specially trained animals to help with mobility of a blind person. All I have to do is show the managers of the apts. the service dogs certificates and papers.
pup was looking at the laws regarding service animals in Germany, because he wants me to go with him to Germany and the laws there are the same, except they call the dogs "Guides" and as such, they are treated as a human guide would be treated. He looked into the other countries that we will be visiting, and a few of them will not allow for guide dogs.

What do you mean the rules of hud don't fit your lifestyle? James and I are encouraged all the time by my neighbor to apply for hud cause we're low income, and I've always said noI want to look where I Want to look not look only on hud accepted places, however I have kind of re thought it cause hud would help a great deal, but if there;s rules about how you can live or something maybe we won't consider it?

I am really sorry that you had those problems in your apartment. Sheesh, I would go nuts (no pun intended lol) if I had a little rodent running around my apartment and I couldnt see him! lol

I think that the woman upped the figure by 50.00 dollars knowing I couldn't afford that much. I understand now the reasoning for higher rent, but FIFTY bucks? C'mon! I would have paid 10.00 more had she offered that.

I am considering having a live in houseboy or slave and there is no way that HUD will allow another person living there. In fact, I am quite sure they do not allow animals and I have two poodles. I also make too much money per month to qualify for HUD.

I managed apartements for years .. and most cities and states have apartment associations that you can make complaints to and can also get information from that will assist you in finding places that are more "friendly" to your needs. It sounds to me as if this last manager was out of line and I would definaltely file a complaint and that is easily done with a letter.

Finding a place to live is difficult at best but when you have special needs it can be frustrateing ... I am now in that position myself.

Good luck in your search and find out about the local association and see if they can provide you with assistance.

EvilGenie, I have learned so much by apartment hunting. Some say this, some say that, so I decided to look into it further and find out what the laws are before approaching another apartment office. I am really sorry that you are disabled. I have read some of your posts and I find that you are not one who sits on the proverbial pity pot. God bless.

Isn't it funny (not funny ha ha but strange) that there are so many who are handicapped and yet we don't really talk about it. I tell each submissive that contacts me and that I find interesting that I am blind, I do not want someone who can't see past my blindness. Most have been sweet and supportive.

As a disabled person, and this goes for all who are, do you tell those that petition you right away that you have a disability? Or do you wait untill you get to know them better?

I have actually found a place and was supposed to be moving today. I think I will take the advice of you and the others and turn the manager in for discrimination.

This thread has been so nice to read. It has opened my eyes (so to speak) to so many things that I had not thought of.

Foget the state laws, first try http://www.hud.gov/offices/fheo/index.cfmg and get the information on the federal laws with a link to state laws which can not be any more lenient toward the landlord than can the federal laws.

I tell people that I communicate with privately that I am retired for health reasons and live on disability. If they dont panic at that then I explain what my health issues are and how they are dealt with in my life. I make sure they know all about them before I meet them.. I want no surprizes. Its part of the whole and if they cant handle it there is no reason for either of us to waste time.

This is exactly how I feel. I can not be with anyone who does not accept me the way I am. All of me. I have been in discussion with a slave and I have been totally up front with him regarding my needs and how I expect to be treated, ect. He is very aware of what it is I need him for. So only time will tell now.

I wouldn't pay to much to become handicapped...Not much of an upside. However, I have seen instances where people thought they might have been discriminated against when it was not the case.

You must be careful before one starts claiming such.

In response to the original posting, I have seen apartment buildings where 3rd floor is almost 100 cheaper than first just because they wanted to rent the walk ups which most people do not want. So the comment about the first floor being more expensive than second probably was correct although a call by one of your friends to the office would verify that. As for them suddenly not having a first floor apartment available, again, a call to their office by a realtor or a friend asking if they had any first floor apartments were available would answer that also. If they said they did have a first floor apartment available, a quick call to the FBI to report this would get you the apartment or them in trouble. Good luck. Remember, term of the lease, size of the apartment as well as if utilities are included or not all can affect the rent of the apartment.

If I have to call the FBI on an apartment complex, I would just as soon not live there after that lol

Hmm that's odd. JAmes and I would be applying as a couple. so maybe it's diffrent if you apply as a couple and not a single person. And I do not think hud itself can say no pets, from what I understand you can choose any apartment you want, and theApartment themselves chooses an animal policy. James an I are considering it, when he's all moved in and settled we'll see and I can always report back on the pet thing:)
