Family trip-traveling with my folks.  For 3 people, cabs are a reasonable way to go, especially because my mother doesn't deal well with public transport.  For a week- I doubt we dropped 100 euro in cab fare.  In Vienna we rented a car- wanted to get outside the city and where we were staying (apt.) public transport would have been problematic.  We discovered the joys of a GPS- navigating in Vienna without one is a nightmare.

Ah, well, travelling with yer folks is a different story. I haven't been to Vienna for over 20 years, but I found the transit system there to be very good, too.  We parked the car, and only used it to go over into Hungary. We stayed up in Grinzing. My grandfather was from Wein.

Hi Scott

I never did make it to KaDeWe, but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the breakfast stuff we were eating came from there. I thought KaDeWe was more like a Needless-Markup though- good finders of stuff, but not a mfg.

You're right about getting around Berlin without wheels-we often used taxis or walked.

Sam

Well, the food court (6th floor) at KaDeWe must be seen to be believed. Try the link I gave you.

Also, why did you take cabs? A week pass for the U-bahn/S-bahn/Bus system was only around 25 Euros for zones A&B when I was there. I had a month pass in Munich for 49 Euros.

KaDeWe rocks.....when you buy food there..on most "stands" they can prepare it...so you can taste it.
If you like sea food...then you are in heaven too ( i just like the colors and the strange fish..lol)

I am 1 hour  from Hershey PA.  when i moved here in 1988, you could not buy a nestle bar.

IMO American chocalate gets ruined by the added sugar and fat.

I put cinnimen on eggs, ice cream. I prefer real cocoa. star bucks has good lates- cocoa itself has antioxidents.  oh- for vanilla each bean runs $3+ just for one.

consuming sugar- well- raisens, sunflour nuts, mix in whole wheat cereal w ice cream.[sort like an ice cream cone] take small bits and savor it. small portiions and stop and let it settle instead of raeching for more.

we are blessed - all of us. wheat futures have doubled in price this month- 2008 expect food to increase in price.

be that as it may- one can eat a rational diet- tho it is hard when one is on the go

Yeah, I could live on the 6th floor at Kaufhaus Des Westens. Unbelievable. I really wanted to buy a fine Eiswein from the Rheingau, but 100+ Euros for a 375 is a bit more than I wanted to spend. Did get some 40 year old Balsamico. I use it drop-wise on Parmagiano. Their sausage section - Gott im Himmel! Ganz Toll! Must be at least 500 sq. ft. /hijack [8D]

Without a shadow of a doubt it has to be Belgium.

No, I'm not a masochist. [;)] I can only imagine what prices are like now that that shithead at 1600 PA Ave has killed off the Dollar. A friend of mine is going over in May for a month Intensiv-Kurs at the Goethe Institut. I'm considering going over if I manage to sell a house I have, and get a housemate to look after things for me. He's staying in Wilmersdorf (another old family stomping ground). I'd probably stay in Kreuzberg or Prenzlauer-Berg. Cool areas.

Dallmayr in Munich has some fine stuff; that would be one of the first places I'd look for chocolate in my favorite city.

Okay, I am going to ask a subquestion within the question.

Which country has the very best dark chocolate?

I gotta know where to retire.

LOL Save a spot for me!  Dark chocolate all the way!

I had a boss who used to bring me chocolates from Paris.  All I know is they came in a little green box and they were absolutely divine.  He was a gazillionaire and a dark chocolate lover himself.  He had an entire cabinet in his kitchen just for various chocolates from around the world.  If he wasn't gay I'd have thrown myself at him. [8D]

In this country, my favorite is Schaerfenberger's semi-sweet dark.  I just had some last night, with a glass of Bourdeaux.  Yum!

MissMorrigan -> RE: which country has the best choclate (2/27/2008 9:31:32 AM)

Well, after having just purchased and eaten/shared a bar of Lindt's Swiss Classic, which is Double Milk Chocolate with a Smooth Milk Filling... the Swiss get my vote! lol

Divine

Decadent (actually, it was quite affordable at £1.39)

Doubly Delicious.

hisdarlinsweetie -> RE: which country has the best choclate (2/27/2008 9:41:50 AM)

Jacque Torres in New York city makes amazing dark chocolate.  It's sweet, not bitter, despite being 72% cocoa.  Plus, it's not ridiculously expensive.  Granted it's a lot more than Hershey's, but it's definitely worth the price!!!

SailingBum -> RE: which country has the best choclate (2/27/2008 12:20:20 PM)

is the such a thing a s bad choclate

Alumbrado -> RE: which country has the best choclate (2/27/2008 4:13:05 PM)

For some people, good chocolate ruins them for anything else....

Others somehow bravely soldier on, forcing themselves to suffer though excruciating mouthfuls of Hershey and Mars dreck...[:D]
