ORIGINAL: Sensualips I was really going to avoid the boob-in-public debate. But seriously. quote:
How do you know there is not a (potential) rapist in the cinema, one who needs the minimal amount of 'stimulation' to think, 'she's showing her tits, she must want some, so I'm going to give it to her'?! And if this person has priors and is trying to avoid any stimulus that triggers this behaviour in himself, trying to do the right thing, and your action 'pushes' his fragile mind over the egde after which he rapes you or someone else and he ends up back in jail? Rape (real nonconsensual rape) is about violence, not sex. Showing a boob is not going to trigger a violent act any more than the myth of the short skirt and heavy makeup. A poor fragile mind trying desperately to avoid the urge for violence is pushed into rape by seeing a tit? And then shame on her for ruining his life? Come now. Plus, she was not alone. Rapists work on opportunity. This is an extremely weak anti-nudity argument Actually... not so weak as you may think. Rape is about "control" - not necessarily violence. It *is* a violent act, but not necessarily intended to be such. Where the short skirt/naked boob issue *could* result in rape is the way in which the woman is carrying herself in such a situation. Rapists often want to bring their victim to a point of humiliation (never mind that, in this case, she was already humiliated - a rapist wouldn't know that) because of whatever fucked-up thoughts are going through their head. The rapist often wants to "get back" at the woman (who, in most cases is nothing more than a place holder for the "real" issue) and showing high self-esteem is often a trigger. Now... how big of a set of brass balls does a woman have to have to expose herself in public and not appear to be upset by it? A HUGE set. How much would that set-off a would-be rapist... quickly and easily. However, the other part of your arguement - opportunity - does stand. But it doesn't change the fact that they may have been followed and that an opportunity MAY arise at some point. Our society really needs to get off the high-horse about crime against women... ::sigh:: There are times when we *are* asking for it, even when we don't realize we are... remember, we can't control others minds, thoughts or desires... as long as that is the case, it's imperative for us to understand what we do can inadvertently affect others. <waits for the stones>
