Books

The Leatherman's Handbook I and II
LeatherFolk

Look for stuff from Guy Baldwin, Jack Rinella, Bob Harris online.

Also if your narrow the question a little more I might be able to help direct you a little more.

Not much is written.  It is more "handed-down."  In fact, that IS part of the tradition. Try finding a Mentor with an Old-Guard background.  It is probably your best bet.  But, you better hurry, it's quickly becoming a dying breed.

However, here are a few links:
I haven't read throught them but glanced.  Hope this helps.

I definitely disagree in reference to a dying-breed. Many adaptations have taken place over the past 25 or so years, but root and core families cast a veryt long shadow even today.

I wouldn't necessarily say its a dying breed... people who actually ARE old guard from the beginning of time.. yes... but those of us who were 'raised' that way, for lack of a better term still carry on traditions.. and there are plenty of us around, you just have to look carefully... ..old guard traditions sometimes take a lot of hits online... I'm usually reluctant to discuss them for that reason...

If you are ever in Chicago check out the Leather Archives. Its a great resource. The web site has excellent information as well but no where near what that have on premises.

"old guard" refers to a various groups of gay men during a period roughly spanning the end of WWII to the mid to late 1960s.  Brought to you by the same uber noble men who brought you glory holes, bath houses and anonymous sex.  I don't say that to be disrespectful but to provide a frame of reference for those who love to blather on about how noble they were.

"Old Guard" with capitals refers to a pompous ass 9 times out of 10 (Archer and a few others being the 1 out of 10 who aren't pompous asses).  It is used by people who can't stand on their own and need to borrow someone else's soapbox so they can imagine themselves looking down on everyone else.  It is just one more version of "my label is shinier than your label" game.

Personally, I am a proud member of the "Old Swiss Chard" for that very reason...

ahh.. there you go...

he has spoken...

you can find pompous asses everywhere in the bdsm/leather communities, but I tend not to paint everyone with one broad brush...

Strange, I didn't know that 1946 or so was "the beginning of time."

Let's not overly romantize a bunch of guys who liked the "guys only" lifestyle of the miliary and decided to recreate it with a bunch of loosely associated (and often very dissimilar) "motorcycle clubs."

Actually.. I wasn't overly romanticising anything... however, my use of the words beginning of time was poor...

there are some good traditions... and for lack of a better term, they are often refered to as old guard... they are a part of my life... they do not need to be a part of anyone elses...

Is it the North or South Old Swiss Card chapter?

What????? Hell I gotta work on my poposity then cause I'm losing my touch. LOL

I've known a few wonderfull men who could make a legitimate, textbook dates, claim to being old guard. Started their journey in the gay leather circles between the mid 40's and mid 50's. To a man they all looked back on that time in very much a Tale of Two Cities kinda way. "It was the best of times It was the worst of times..." The same can be said for the couple dozen men I know who were what often is called the second generation of Old Guard those who served under those textbook date men.
Most of them also had the Tale of Two Cities hindsight. I think as you move farther along down time that peoplestart to see it as a "Golden Age" of leather. Personally I think that the Golden age thing is more likely right around the 2000 mark.

Her...don't worry..Archer is straight, no matter how good he looks in leather...

i personally like to do the sit down and talk to my elder's when there is some down time thing to learn about history, whether it be in or out of this lifestyle...it may just be one person's experience, but it sure as hell was real...and i've had the opportunity to sit down with some people at some national events and learn from them what they learned from those people who are and were what we call "old gaurd"...(only because i am not old enough to have had the opportunity to talk to many of them myself...though if i ever do, i won't pass it up)....also there are a few individuals that have personal libraries that catalog things that the "average" person  had no idea were out there...Vi Johnson stands out imparticular because i saw her's in person...and as mentioned the Leather Archives...are archiving the Leather History... oh and an archival website http://www.colors-of-leather.com/ by Mama's Mischevious Boy...
