I'll stay off making a list ... those seem to come across as popularity contests at best, and "These people are really intellectual, they must be reading my posts." at worst. [;)]

I admire people that can engage in discussion without looking down on other posters. It's just too easy to call someone stupid, or a racist, or anti-semitic ... too convenient to insist that people can't understand you, or to project that you can somehow know their heart and mind, from a few words on a message board ... too deflectionist to cast doubt on someone by insinuating that they may be some long lost retired nickname, etc ...

Simply put ... just have something to say ... say it ... and spare everyone the nose in the air.

As an aside, its unfortunate that I fall short of my own standards a bit more than I would like.

I couldn't agree more.  [;)]

Exactly, there are many I enjoy and/or admire. I just gave a FEW names that have made me stop and think. Not always agree, but definately think.

Many posters i admire for different reasons but for intellect - Aswad and Noah

Let me be controversial. I've never read anything they actually believe in. No doubt that would put them in a position of having their beliefs dissected in the way they seem to enjoy dissecting other people's beliefs. Maybe they don't believe in anything which is fair enough but anyone can do what they do without putting themselves in the firing line, it's easy. I far more admire people who put their themselves in the firing line rather than sniping from from behind pseudo-philosophical barricades.

To be honest, Noah's posts are so long winded, most of the time I get bored before I've read them. If I want a lesson in philosphy, I've got enough books on in my book case and they are far superior.

I'm with kittysol on this one, I think school debating classes should be banned.

Hello A/all,

There are a few who i admire and they have been mentioned by previous posts, such as Aswad, Stephan and mnottertail; but a name i havent seen mentioned is Bull from the Gorean board.  i find His mind seems to be as big as His muscles!  Quite a heady mix!

Regards,

MercNBeth,Caitlyn,Meatcleaver,NorthernGent,FirmHandKY, LadyEllen

I'm sure there are more, but those off the top of my head generally seem to put forth there views, and argue for there position well. I don't agree with any of them more than 2/3rds of the time at most and some rarely at all. And some are so ideologically locked in there way of thinking I don't participate in the convo much, but they seem intelligent though. So, there you go for what it's worth.

Your feelings should not be hurt... I truly was going to enter your name...then I remembered all the discussions I had with you and said to myself...ahhh screw him...[image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m9.gif[/image]

No really ...you always have insightful posts as many do here... I've found the general intelligence level on CM to be much above average.

Not true, you weren't left out, you just hadn't sprung up yet :-) .

marieToo -> RE: Who on CM d'ya most admire intellectually? (4/5/2008 11:00:57 AM)

I agree, and I think most people are inclined to list those whose thought processes and opinions most often align with their own.

I would imagine some people can be objective however, myself included.  There are a handful that come to mind, and only one of them that I actually like.  But I'm not going to list them, because it's adolscent at best.

They aren't idiots but I can't figure out how they have come to their perception of the world, I just assume its down to their own personal history. (yep, I do admire their intellect, even though it baffles me.)

Hmmm... if I can’t be admired for my towering intellectual gifts, I guess I could settle for being mystifying. If you can’t convert you enemies... confuse them. Of course, I like to look at things from multiple perspectives so perhaps it is you, meatcleaver, who is mystifying.

Philosophy – don’t feel so bad. One thing about you I do admire is you willingness to ask questions without fear of looking... shall we say... stupid? I mean that in a good way. Too many people around here use Google to make themselves appear as experts in everything, and then proceed to chop down others as intellectual cretins. Nobody can know everything so it is nothing more than an exercise in ego gratification. The truly wise know that the only thing they know for certain is that they know nothing.

Oh, screw these popularity contests, I thought I’d left that shit behind with highschool. I’m hungry and going to get some lunch. Anybody care to join me at Arbys?
